I don’t think South will run away with this one, however if the Raiders don’t have Savage suited up ready to go as some of the commenters have mentioned this one could get out of hand. I don’t think Coach Smith is buying into that sort of rat poison anyways, they’ll be expecting #21 to have 20 carries. Which to me will be the most exciting part of this matchup, will that Spartans interior blow up the middle repeatedly because they have the personnel to do just that. You nor I or anyone else for that matter can go through every program and dictate whether or not the coach is doing the right things. That’s why winning and losing is the only true standard. If you would’ve read my first post that I commented on this thread you would’ve saw where I mentioned talent and support from the administration is more important than anything you’ll ever draw up on the board. You’re not wrong to have that outlook of Rush but again a subjective stance, some parents don’t mind a coach that is strictly about the game of football and I would consider myself one of those too. I for one don’t expect my children to be raised by their HS football coach; that’s my responsibility to instill the proper values and morals into my son. Is it a plus to have a leader who can boost the importance of those qualities? Absolutely, but it’s not their job to do that.

Completely agree, when we get to this part of the season sure we want to see the fundamentals in action but do whatever you have to do to execute the catch. No doubt.

In the NFL and well funded colleges I’m sure they bust out a new pair of gloves often and when they’re fresh the amount of tack on them is unbelievable. I’d say we’ll see a lot of dropped passes this Friday, and some will be on the pass catchers though the QB still has the tallest task by trying to sling a wet football. In my personal experience, I’d rather throw a wet football than a football that has to be in the frigid temperature cause it turns into a big ol stone that nobody is trying to throw nor catch.

So we do agree that winning and losing is the standard, that’s nice to hear you say which is all I’ve been getting to from the beginning. We’re just having a philosophical discussion, no harm given nor taken. I do agree with you that coaches can be let go in situations that the school probably would’ve been better off with seeing it through rather than changing the guard. Where I don’t agree is when you mentioned you wouldn’t want your son playing for some coaches that do win, and while you have a right to your opinion it’s subjective thus not holding any weight for other parents who may like that coaching style you deem to be bad for your kid. All I’m saying is winning football games is the measuring stick that we all can see without any sort of bias to the discussion.

Were they calling him after those 4–7 seasons with the Panthers? No. He got attention once he went 7–5 in year three and proved he could actually build something. This job is simple, you win or people start looking for someone who will. You don’t have to be a state contender every year, but you damn sure can’t stack losing seasons. If Coach Cantwell did that where he’s at now, the CAL administration would already be lining up replacements and he knows that. Competitors embrace that pressure and when you want to be at the top of the profession winning isn’t optional it becomes the expectation.

@zoneblitz24 Who are the best coaches in our State in the last decade? Cantwell, Haddix, Brandon Smith? Think we could all agree to that. You’re trying to weigh two different things on the same scale and that’s just wrong to do. All 3 of those guys are great leaders, they also have support from administration and their coaching staff, great players as well. If any of them didn’t win football games at their school they’d be replaced by someone. What you are describing is a great leader of men who is not a good ball coach, and that’s okay, we need those individuals in the landscape too because not all programs have the things in place to build a successful program. Trying to move the goal post on how you equate good coaching to anything other than wins and losses is a loser mentality, again great coaches have the same qualities as a great leader though not all great leaders can be great coaches.

To each their own but how you are attempting to assess coaching is subjective thus leading to misunderstanding of what is expected from the role. We could sit here all day discussing what qualities you want from your coach. X’s and O’s in my opinion is down on my list of things you are in search of, participation from kids is up there. Another big factor is how well you can assemble a competent coaching staff to back you, but at the end of the day the only real way to judge coaching is from winning and losing. It’s concrete, not opinion based.

At the end of the day the only thing you’re judged off of as a coach is whether you are winning or losing football games. That’s the profession, no other way to cut it. The funniest misconception I had as a young coach was the confidence I had in my schematics of the game rather than my ability to get the kids to buy into what I’m trying to implement. We’ve seen teams who run power left and right sprinkled with a fullback dive time to time make State title runs and I’m supposed to believe it was because of the X’s and O’s or would it be the mixture of talent and leadership of the coaching staff. Everybody in a coordinating role knows some sort of chalk talk, who is actually going to get them to execute it is what makes coaches elite and even when they do put them in position if they don’t have the personnel it’ll never matter.

I get what you’re asking, who’s actually operating at a high level schematically. And there are many staffs across our State that are sharp on both sides of the ball but even then the ceiling is still tied to the talent in the building. A great system can maximize what you have, but it can’t magically turn average personnel into a state contender. Even if you’re putting your athletes in the right position to make plays every snap, it’s difficult to assess coaches if they aren’t executing.

Anyone who tells you they have the scheme to win is a liar. You need the players to win that’ll never change, Coach McKee and his Cardinals are a great example. 2013 State Champions, they had a great 3 headed monster and hoisted the trophy. They’ve had good teams since but they haven’t been at the top, not because McKee changed what he was doing but because of the lesser talent walking through the halls. History repeating itself no? Trinity had a strange 2013, now we’re in 2025 the Purple reign over 5A seems to be in question as well. All it takes is a special group of kids to come along to have a jolt of success. Not saying the X’s and O’s are not important because coaching can 100% lose football games when the talent is similar, but elite players will ruin schemes more often than your average kid being in the right position to stop the playmaker in the open field.

X scored 27 (Wallace could’ve had one or two more, he put in neutral), CAL only scored 27, Flyers had 28. Now I’m supposed to believe the Eagles are going to score in the 20’s too?
