The Eagles of Lexington Christian Academy (10-3) host the Belfry Pirates (12-1) this Friday at 7:00 PM in the Class 2A semifinals. This is a clash of two programs with strong postseason runs.

LCA went 7-3 in the regular season and has powered through the playoffs: 35-13 over Metcalfe County in round one, 51-21 over Monroe County in round two, and a 35-16 win over Mayfield in the quarterfinals to reach 10-3. Belfry finished regular season 9-1 and dominated their playoff path: Big wins in the first two rounds, followed by a 41-14 quarterfinal victory over Breathitt County.

Key stats: LCA is averaging about 34 points per game offensively with a balanced attack, while holding opponents to under 18 PPG defensively. Belfry boasts a potent offense at 47 PPG, led by a dominant ground game, and a stingy defense allowing just 12 PPG.

Belfry and LCA have only played twice. The series is split 1-1. Belfry won 39-20 in 2019 and LCA won 36-7 in 2022.

Don’t let LCA’s three losses fool you. These are the epitome of what we mean when we use the term “good losses”.  Similar to what a lot of teams do, LCA schedules a brutal non district slate to prepare them for the playoffs.   Iron sharpens iron.

Significant to note that LCA’s 3 losses are to teams from higher classes with a combined record of 38-1. All of whom are still playing and have an excellent chance of bringing home a championship.

3A CAL (13-0) really took LCA to the woodshed  47-7 but that team is one of the best teams in KY from all classes and nobody in 2A would have fared better.

4A Boyle Co (12-1) beat LCA by a touchdown.  Boyle’s lone loss came in a head scratcher to Lexington Catholic. The Rebels started the season a little slow by their standards but they are playing lights out now and they just destroyed Cov Cath.

LCA lost by a single point to 4A Franklin Co (13-0) in a very impressive performance.   As Franklin is one of the top tier teams in their class

This is a very interesting match up for a chance to play in state championship game. Although I know alot about LCA, I see Belfry does have a history from winning state championships in 3A. I knew them coming to 2A would be interesting and make 2A even tougher. Just not 100 percent on who to choose other than LCA being considered west in the RPI and I like supporting anyone considered west this is a tough one. I hold off on anything at this time until I see more of Belfry.

I see LCA winning this by a few scores. I think they are solidly the number 2 in 2A after how they dominated Mayfield. I also don’t know a ton about Belfry since David Jones and Doug Howard aren’t there anymore.

Very interesting game to say in the least. I could pick either way, but I believe Belfry gets it done closely. Good luck to both teams.

I agree with you about this being an interesting game.  Both teams have some very good playmakers, but I believe this game is going to come down to who wins the war in the trenches.  My heart wants to pull for Belfry, but my mind tells me LCA in a very competitive game.

Nash Whelan is a star in the making. He's going to pose problems for Belfry's defense, throwing and running. The Pirates have a ball-hawking secondary, but may be missing an important cog. Cayden Varney appeared to injure an ankle against Breathitt County. Not sure if he returned or not, or what his status is this week.

Usually Belfry has an advantage this time of year. LCA, to the best of my knowledge, hasn't had to prepare for an offense like what they'll see this week. Their entire defensive alignment may be different. But you have to respect Belfry's ability to hit chunk plays throwing the ball now more than ever.

Both teams present challenges from all angles. Should be a great game. Leaning LCA at the moment.

Saw a video of Varney already jumping and moving well. He will play.
