I think the loss to Apollo will refocus the Maroons. I still like Owensboro to win this game though. 28-14.

I could get behind that. And this year I think it would have helped with some early confidence with us having a new head coach and breaking in a new QB. Playing say St. X then Henderson and ending with CAL would have helped us IMO. Or say playing Henderson the 1st game then CAL and ending the regular season with St. X. I get the RPI boost from playing the 6A Colonels but there are so many schools that I’d rather play from a being a competitive game perspective and also a marketing perspective. I want Owensboro to use the blueprint Bowling Green has provided. Now Purple please correct me if anything I say going forward is wrong. But the Purples got rid of long time rivals Franklin-Simpson and Warren East years ago. (And yes I realize they were district rivals for many years.) Anyway Bowling Green jumped into scheduling schools from Louisville, Lexington, etc. Starting with teams like PRP, Central, etc. Then building to St. X, Male, & Trinity. OHS continues to play Daviess County, Henderson, Apollo, etc. because it’s what we’ve always done. Outside of the money from the gate, and I guess now RPI, I don’t think those games do enough to prepare us for a 5A playoff run. When OHS did jump into scheduling Louisville teams it was immediately Male, St. X, & CAL. Personally I would have liked to have seen us ease into scheduling JCPS schools by playing Manual, Ballard, or Central. All solid programs but not historically the best of the best from Jefferson County. So your program gets the media coverage from the city but may not get beat to death on the field from say a Male, Trinity, St. X, or CAL. Now after taking on what I’ll describe as second tier teams(Central, Manual,etc) for the sake of this post then you schedule the tier one programs. I’d also like to see us get into the Lexington market every so often. Lexington Catholic, Bryan Station, Boyle Co., or Freddie D. As well as the NKY market with Cov Cath, Highlands, Ryle, etc. I just don’t think playing teams west of I-65 all the time sheds the type of light on the program that’s needed. I’m not saying we need a schedule yearly that has St.X, Freddie D, Highlands, & Boyle County on it but if we aspire to be talked about with those programs we’ve got to venture out more with our scheduling. Of course all this is just the opinion of one Red Devil fan. ?

Exactly what I meant. Our district outside of Madisonville is terrible this year. I know OHS has improved but it’s hard to really get a clear picture because everyone we’ve played since CAL, outside of Catholic, has been pretty weak. Henderson, while being a long time rival, hasn’t beaten us in like 10 years. And most of the games in that streak have been blow outs. I’m all for dropping that game.

I like OHS to win over there but IMO it’s not going to be an easy W.

Red Devils have improved a lot but the softening of the schedule has helped a ton! Anxious to see this Madisonville game. I wish we ended the regular season with like a South Warren, Franklin Co., Boyle Co., Manual, etc. instead of Henderson.

Owensboro thoroughly dominated Owensboro Catholic. Madisonville beat Paducah. Most would say those are quality wins. Especially if Scott Co. gets credit for beating Bowling Green.

You are absolutely right. That’s a heck of a schedule. My mind went to ranked 5A teams.

Bowling Green has the toughest and I don’t think it’s close this year. I would say Atherton is weak. And deceptive is Woodford Co. I say that because Harvest Prep(OH) appears to be down this year from what they have been the last 4-5 years. And so does Ballard. If either of those teams had been as strong as the last 4-5 years I think a case could be made for Woodford Co. having the toughest schedule.

Funny how folks bring up the 3 straight loses to Catholic but they never mention the 3 straight wins OHS had before that. As an alum I never viewed Catholic as a rival for my Red Devils. It’s a local game that we definitely want to win but for anybody above the age of 35 Catholic is an after thought on the Red Devils schedule. Unless of course we lose. 49-18-1 all time vs the Aces is ownership!! And for all the success folks claim Catholic has had recently they’re down 17-8 in the last 25 years. There was a time(80’s & 90’s) if the Red Devils were going to drop a local game it was more than likely going to be to the Eagles. They seemed to always have decent athletes and would produce D1/1-AA level kids almost as much as OHS. Anxious to see this game Friday night.

Anybody know what’s going on with the kid that transferred to OHS from Castle over in Indiana? He could help us along the D-line. Also hearing Apollo will be without one of their best OL.

While it’s on my mind Hopkinsville/Christian County also had players like Chris Whitney(Clemson/NBA), Tony Lovan(WKU), CJ Pepper(Arkansas State), Corey Thompson, & Tobiah Hopper(Louisville) come through during the 90’s.

We shall see….my biggest hope with this new hire, after getting wins, is that we stop losing kids from the program. Friday night the Devils will face 3-4 former players that start for Apollo.

Maybe the biggest omission in this thread is 6’8 Darren Allaway from UHA. He led the Blazers to the state championship in 1992 and was named the MVP of the Sweet 16. Teams had no answer for him in the Sweet 16 that year. (Btw all of the UHA Sweet 16 games are on YouTube if anyone wants to check them out.) Anyway Allaway was a KY All Star that summer then went on to play for Stanford University in the PAC 10. Also on that UHA team was 6’2 senior guard Marty Cline. He would go on to be on the all newcomer team in the OVC for Morehead State as a freshman. Sergio Luyk was also a really good player for UHA back in those times. I believe he was in the 1990 class. Luyk was a 6’8 forward who went on to play for St. John’s in the Big East. As others have mentioned there was also Greg Buckner(Clemson/NBA), Isiah Victor(Tennessee), Lamont Barnes(Temple), & Harold Swanagan(Notre Dame) that passed through UHA in the 90’s.

Take it with a grain of salt but I read on social media that the head to head vs Owensboro Catholic is like 49-18-1 in Owensboro’s favor. I like OHS to beat Apollo 35-14.

What grade are they in? Did they play any varsity minutes this year? Will they have to sit out until next year??

Madisonville is better than last year IMO. They’re physical and they have good RB’s. Plus the schedule aligns for them with Paducah and Owensboro at home. The Maroons are always hard to beat at home. Tilghman has dropped a ton of passes and they can’t run the ball at least not tonight. Good win for the team from Hopkins County if they hold on.

I think Hancock gets the win.

Tavion Hollingsworth is probably somewhere near the top of the list.
