Who are the top volleyball programs in the Bluegrass State?
You just made my point. The mountain schools do not care about volleyball, and their performance at the state tournament reflects it. Nothing wrong with not caring, but to continue to send teams to the state tournament is wrong if they in fact do not care about the sport. It is senseless to watch School A from the mountains send underhand serves to Louisville Assumption back row for an easy pass, set and spike. My solution is to have a Governor's Cup type of postseason tournament instead of the state, invite the top three schools from both Louisville regions, Notre Dame and an at-large school from the state. It would be more competitive, give a team from say, Lexington, a shot at the top programs even though we all know the best Lexington school can not compete with the Louisville elite teams in volleyball. The current state tournament is just not worth watching when, as you correctly stated, many schools and regions do not care about the sport.

Holmes 2016
This is all correct. I can understand if a basketball player is a no-doubt college player concentrating on that sport only, but most of the Holmes basketball players are not college prospects. In the 1970s and 1980s, there were many who played both sports. A player like James Hayes in the early 1990s excelled at both sports, was arguably the best football player in the area as a junior and senior. Very disheartening to see the numbers continue to drop at Holmes for football, but all those points are spot-on.

Are they allowed to have their pads on at midnight tonight? Per the KHSAA rules?

Holmes 2016
I was told 19 varsity players a month ago. NKYknowitall basically confirms that by saying they have no freshmen team and only 25-30 players total counting freshmen. So if they have, let's say, 10 freshmen, that leaves 20 upperclass players total. I could care less how many they have as long as Holmes beats them.

I'm not the 24 hour news cycle. I suggest you subscribe to cable TV if you want up to the minute breaking stories.

Holmes 2016
Is Wiggins or Chevington playing for the Newport football team this year?

Holmes 2016
OK, that was a month ago. How many are out for the VARSITY, not the freshmen team? Or do they have enough to field a freshmen team?

You asked, and I gave you a strong hint. What else did you expect?

Holmes 2016
Holmes can only have success if enough players come out for the team. Until they have around 50 players in the top three grades, it's tough to compete in their district. Not sure what has happened to cause the apathy for Holmes football. Back when I played at Holmes, numbers were never a problem. We had other issues, but we always had plenty of players. Not the case the past 15 years or so. Numbers just are not good.

And we have a new coach at Boone County! Not a woman after all.

Who are the top volleyball programs in the Bluegrass State?
For volleyball in the state of Kentucky, enrollment means nothing. It's all about the club teams and where their handlers/parents send them in Louisville. The state champion is determined during the Louisville regionals, the Sweet 16 is nothing but a chance to crown one of the two Louisville schools. Notre Dame has also lost ground because of all the coaching turmoil/parental interference in recent years that cost them a very good coach. Huge schools like Henderson County are not competitive in volleyball because no one in that part of the state takes the sport seriously. If you have attended the state tournament, you have no doubt seen the mountain schools which have players still serving underhand to get it in play, and that's just an easy spike for the Louisville schools. There is no way to fix a sport when only two and a half regions (the 9th is the half because of Notre Dame) take it seriously. I would say forget the idea of a Sweet 16 statewide tournament and make it a 8-team Governor's Cup type of deal and invite the top 3 teams from each Louisville region, Notre Dame, and one at-large team from the state based on their overall record and strength of schedule. That at-large team will still get trounced by the Louisville schools, but at least they were invited.

Holmes 2016
I heard the same. Not sure why Lloyd was the choice to play home games, seems like TMC would have been better for Friday night since TMC plays Saturday. Those 40 players include freshmen? If we have 40 varsity and JV players, that is a step forward. But if that is with freshmen, I would have deep concerns. Our program has not had good numbers in years. I would be thrilled if the 40 players are all sophomores, juniors, seniors. I know we lost some very good players from our senior class.

Did Radio Station drop your team for this season?
Agree with you. iHeart is the only place complete idiots like Lance McAlister and Mo Egger could have jobs. They are terrible. I would rather have high school sports on air than either of those two clowns.

What happened to Don Weber from ICN 6? I know the station folded into virtual weather casting, but I never see Don Weber on TV. Is he still in the sports, or is he gone? Loved his shows when he had Friday night highlights. The area misses that type of show in the worst way.

Covington Catholic 2016/2017
I didn't realize he was a Campbell County guy. I do remember some Franzens who played at Campbell County years ago. Heard he did a great job as the freshman coach at Highlands, actually helped developed the players, something that is not happening at the varsity level there. One of the Holmes people who know the sport said Franzen will be a varsity head coach in the very near future, they were not surprised CovCath went after him. They said he has a good background at the college and high school levels. My only question is how do my Holmes Bulldogs miss out on guys like this?
-
Covington Catholic 2016/2017
Not sure where he went to high school. I heard he was a student coach at one time under Nancy Winstel at NKU. Spent 2 or 3 years at Highlands, did a nice job and CovCath noticed the way he relates to the players. Great addition for CovCath, he and Sorrell.

Covington Catholic 2016/2017
From what I heard, he is a great addition to the CovCath program. Very positive with the players, knows the game, coached under Nancy Winstel at NKU as a student I was told. Huge loss for Highlands, but what else is new over there lately in basketball?

Covington Catholic 2016/2017
Sorrell and Franzen great additions to CovCath. Meanwhile, my Holmes Bulldogs stand pat with Listerman as head coach. Holmes will never compete with CovCath in the future at this rate. While CovCath adds two young up and coming coaches in Sorrell and Franzen, both who could succeed Ruthsatz if/when he leaves, Holmes has no idea or plans about the future. Congrats to CovCath for having a plan, shame on Holmes for not bringing in Brad Carr as head coach for this season.

As usual, you are wrong. CovCath added two new coaches, Sorrell and Franzen. Please check your facts.

Who are the top volleyball programs in the Bluegrass State?
I'm not criticizing the Louisville schools, not their fault they try and the rest of the state doesn't take the sport serious. The mountain schools are particularly bad in volleyball and should not get an auto berth to the state tournament if they are not going to put the effort into fielding competitive programs for volleyball. The western part of the state is also decades behind in volleyball, even seen girls serving underhanded! While the Assumptions and Mercys have girls with great jump serves, schools from some regions can barely get a serve over the net. Sad for the sport in Kentucky, and why I say the state tournament will be abolished in the future. It's a Louisville invitation, but only two schools can win the title. Why invite 16 teams?

Covington Catholic 2016/2017
Sorrell and Franzen. CovCath goes young on the bench, good moves. Sorrell very good basketball IQ, Franzen one of best frosh coaches in 9th Region last two years.

Sorrell the new bench coach. Benny Franzen the new JV coach.
