Why would he leave WVU to go to Thomas More or the Mount? A little surprised to hear this.

Anyone hearing Tyler Bezold is leaving West Virginia for either Thomas More or Mount St. Joe's? One of the Holmes coaches said today he's going to one of them.

Spud Byrd, Bowling Green running back in the 1970s. Watched him singlehandedly sprint past Boone County in the 1976 Recreation Bowl at Montgomery County. Never saw a faster tailback. Not sure if he played in college, but what a fabulous player at BGHS.

1975 NewCath beat Bath County in first round of state tournament. They then had to face powerful Henry Clay and lost a heartbreaker by a 72-68 score. Henry Clay went on to finish state runner-up to Darrell Griffith and Louisville Male. Right before that, Henry Clay defeated Louisville Central in the state semifinals. NewCath had a great team in 1975, lots of depth and great coaching with John Gross. Beat a fine Holy Cross team to win the 9th Region.

The DeVoto brothers, Gary and Joe, plus Kenny Wilfong, Dave Faust and Mike Schmidt in addition to others listed above. Great team. Had an unfortunate draw at the state tourney. I thought this team had a shot at winning the 9th Region's first state title.

The 1975 NewCath team was outstanding. Maybe the deepest, most talented team in their history.

When you lose to a team with a losing record in the first round of the Sweet 16, it's hard to seriously call yourself the school's best team. The 1984 NewCath squad laid the biggest egg in Sweet 16 history at the time with that loss to Scott County.

Agree with every point. The 1978 Holmes team is one of the best ever in No. Ky. and had so much talent in addition to Schloemer and Beal. They also had John Wimzie, a D-1 talent but only 6-2, a 6-7 center in Tony Malik (or Reed, whatever he went by that year), Moeves at guard, Phil Davis, Todd Riley and Mo Green. Walton and Simpson were sophs on that team. If Nate Flanigan and Steve Briscoe had remained at Holmes, both would have been sophs that year and actually played significant minutes. Briscoe, who played at a high school in Cincinnati that I can't remember, was actually better than Beal. Flanigan was just the best inside player in Covington junior high school history. Great run by Holmes in the 1970s.

If Bellevue has 30 players when they play Holmes, my Bulldogs could be in big trouble. I don't expect more than 30-35 on the field for Holmes this season. Numbers will be a problem.

How many of those close to 30 are freshmen? I meant varsity only players. And the 19 was last month, they could have more at this point.

Carl Hafele from St. Thomas would be No. 2 behind Phil Hasson. Ken Shields is definitely the coach. Kenny has the distinction of being on the Mount Rushmore for two 9th region schools in Highlands and St. Thomas. He would also be on the NKU Mount Rushmore for the head coach, barely edging out Mote Hils.

This is the problem. When I played football at Holmes back in the '70s, we always had at least 50 players on the varsity of sophomores, juniors and seniors. We actually had freshman team with over 30 players when I was a junior. I don't know what has happened to the interest and numbers. Holmes loses 11 seniors from that 26 total you mentioned. Not a good sign. Luckily we play Newport (17 players as of last month) and Bellevue (19 players as of last month). Those may be our only wins this season.

Going to be tough to better last year's 4-7 record, three of those wins against small schools Walton-Verona, Bellevue and Newport. The Bulldogs were handed a 41-0 loss at Johnson Central in 4A playoff game. Losing leading rusher Andrew Arnold is bad news for Bulldogs. Arnold rushed for over 1,000 years as a senior. Holmes must replace 11 seniors, among them was quarterback Desean Brumfield. 2nd-leading rusher Salih Abdullah is back for his senior year after going for 500+ yards as a junior. All in all, best case for young Bulldogs is 3-4 wins. Numbers must improve for Holmes to compete in 4A after going 1-4 in regional games last season.

Interesting about William Kean, had never heard of him. Sounds like a great coach with 856 wins. I would wonder how the competition he coached against compared to the teams Central had to play under Graves in the 1960s and 1970s. Central was absolutely dominant at a time Kentucky high school basketball was loaded with Division I talent. Both great coaches in any case.

Simpson and Meyer both great 2-3 sport players. As a Holmes grad, the best 2-3 sport Newport player I recall is a guy named Jim Cutter. As a baseball player for Newport he hit like .600 or better two straight years and was drafted by the Expos. He ended up playing at NKU in college, owns a construction company in N. Ky. if I am not mistaken. He also was a very good football player and lettered in basketball for Newport.

Yes, I forgot about Morton, he was a great player at Central. How about the all-time coach for Central? I don't have a name in mind. Can't recall who coached the great Central teams of the late 1960s and early 70s.

Great coaches don't necessarily win state titles, player do. Go back and scan the 1976-78 Maysville teams with the Myricks and how far they went with a thin roster. Great coaching got them there. We can agree to disagree.

So is @Mustang right or wrong? Did Neltner receive some "help" from the outside in getting the honor? I thought he was a good player, but in an era when the state of Kentucky's talent was at an all-time low.
