The only championship volleyball played in Kentucky is in Louisville. Three or four schools at the most have a chance at winning the state, all in that city. The rest of Kentucky is really behind in the sport of volleyball. The state tournament has become pointless as everyone already knows who the state champion will be - a Louisville school. The volleyball played in several regions is really not good.

hi thanks for responding. Why is that? that is shame dont you think? there has to be more talent around the Commonwealth. I'm very sad to hear about this. I have some ideas : How about a huge volleyball tourney in 3 parts of the state? Just have the schools from the western play in one . the Central ones play central. Eastern ones play in Ashland? Also, is there a volleyball all star game ? how about a volleyball clinic for the girls to attend? how about a volleyball all star game with Indiana.? I hope these ideas work. I would love to work with someone to get a volleyball invite together with coaches and ADs. I hope I havent bored you with this. HOpe to hear from you again. Thanks and have a wonderful day. Roy

The volleyball state tournament in Kentucky will soon go the way of slow-pitch softball. With only a handful of schools that take the sport seriously, it's a non-event. The two Louisville regions and Notre Dame/St. Henry are the only programs worth watching at the state. Many of the regions send teams to the state so far out of touch with modern volleyball it's painful to see them on the same court as said programs.

From another thread. More girls participate in Volleyball than any other girls sport. With the high participation you would think other areas outside of Louisville would be able to compete? NKY has had some decent teams, but have not been able to get that big win lately.

 

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association enjoyed record participation levels during the 2015-16 season, with 79,805 rostered participants across the KHSAA’s 13 sports and four sport-activities. Participation levels increased for the fourth-consecutive year, with football once again ranking as the most popular sport with 14,336 competitors (31 girls) playing for 221 schools – an increase of 370 student-athletes over the prior year.

 

Aided by the addition of four sport-activities (Archery, Bass Fishing, Bowling and Competitive Cheer) and the sport of field hockey, participation has increased by seven percent over the last four years with an added 5,210 kids participating in KHSAA-sponsored activities since the 2012-13 season. Football (1,021) and soccer (877) have seen the largest increase in total participants since the 2012-13 season among the KHSAA’s sport offerings.

 

“The KHSAA has always, for 100 years, tried to promote participation opportunities for all students. There has been a special renewed focus these last several years with the addition of four sport-activities and one sport, as well as the tremendous response we have received for the addition of Adapted and Unified Activities in specific sports,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “Sports and sport-activities remain the number one dropout prevention tool in secondary education and a valuable addition to classroom learning. It has long been documented that the academic success rate remains higher for participants in sports and sport-activities, and that those that participate in more than one sport remain the gold standard for academic and scholastic achievement.

 

“I am especially grateful for the support of our Board of Control, the hard working staff at the association, the hundreds of volunteers that assist with our state events and the unending support of our member schools and their staffs that work to make these opportunities available and successful.”

 

Basketball ranked second in the state in 2015-16 in terms of total competitors with 12,626 participants (an increase of 353 students from a year ago), followed closely by soccer at 12,501 competitors (up 461 kids from 2014-15). Track and Field placed fourth in the state with a total of 11,650 participants during the 2015-16 season.

 

After football, baseball was the most popular sport for boys with 7,499 participants, followed by basketball (6,716), track and field (7,144) and soccer (6,485). Volleyball was the most popular sport on the girls’ side with 6,366 participants, followed by soccer (6,016), softball (5,846) and basketball (5,482). Soccer enjoyed the largest increase in participants from a year ago with 461 new total competitors, followed by football (370) and basketball (353).

 

Basketball also ranked as the most-sponsored sport across Kentucky with 275 of a possible 277 schools fielding teams last year. Baseball, softball and volleyball all tied for second in the state as each sport boasted 259 teams. Archery and Bass Fishing saw the largest increase of sponsored teams, with each sport-activity adding 16 programs. The additional 16 teams in Bass Fishing marked an increase of 26 percent to bring its total to 77 teams, while Archery enjoyed a 13 percent growth to bring its total count to 137 teams

Wow, that's a little harsh. Volleyball may be really strong in Louisville over the last 25 years but that doesn't mean the rest of the state is behind. It means girls will go to either Mercy or Assumption to just play volleyball where they will have a solid team made up top players from 1 to 10. Where as possibly in other schools in other parts of the state they are not labeled as volleyball schools and you may have 1-3 players or at best 1-4 being top club players and the remainder be filled by strong players, but just not the same caliber.

 

Northern Kentucky has produced some top D1 & USA Team athletes in the area and they would be miffed to think they were behind the times. Notre Dame is about as close as you get to be considered a power house school in Northern Kentucky for volleyball but calling them a volleyball only school would discount all the other girls that play soccer, softball, tennis at such a high level.

 

While I can only speak of Northern Kentucky, I can say that I would take the top players from all the 9th Region schools on one team against any Louisville school any day of the week.. That's about as close to a level playing field it would be.

You have to understand 3 things first: No public school has ever won a Volleyball State Championship. Only 6 schools have ever won a championship. And no school outside of Louisville has won a championship in 20 years.

 

Statewide excitement over volleyball is just not going to be there because, realistically, only the 3 Louisville schools have a shot of winning the title every year - with the Region 9 (Northern Kentucky) and Region 11 (Lexington) winners having an outside shot.

 

The talent gap between the "Big 4" (Assumption, Mercy, Sacred Heart, Notre Dame) vs the rest of the state is massive. The Big 4 are nationally ranked every year, receive national coverage, and play a national schedule against the best in the nation from other states. The Big 4 can beat state champs from other states, and nationally ranked teams from California and Texas. A rural public school isn't going to be able to compete with that.

 

Yes, there are absolute D1 superstars here and there across the state. But you better have 15 legit college players on your team if you want to beat Assumption, because that's what they have every year.

 

And then there's club. Louisville area club volleyball is the best in the nation. People move there so their kids can play. Northern Kentucky is pretty good too. And Lexington is getting better, thus the Dunbars and Henry Clays of the world are getting better. So if you aren't playing club volleyball, and not just any club volleyball, but nationally ranked high-end-best-in-the-nation-traveling-all-over-the-country club volleyball, you are not keeping up with the Big 4.

 

Kentucky likely produces more collegiate volleyball players per population than any other state, but the complete dominance by 4 Catholic schools probably generates a lot of resentment and dampens the enthusiasm statewide. Plus the State Tournament is a joke, leaving out very good teams from stronger regions, in favor of an all-inclusive format that results in blow-out matches. Go to LIVT if you want to see the best HS Volleyball in the State, not the State Tourney.

The only solution I see is having the two Louisville regions play their own "state" championship, and letting the rest of the state have their own championship tournament. Because we all know in the 21st century everyone deserves a trophy, even if they don't earn it.

I'm not criticizing the Louisville schools, not their fault they try and the rest of the state doesn't take the sport serious. The mountain schools are particularly bad in volleyball and should not get an auto berth to the state tournament if they are not going to put the effort into fielding competitive programs for volleyball. The western part of the state is also decades behind in volleyball, even seen girls serving underhanded! While the Assumptions and Mercys have girls with great jump serves, schools from some regions can barely get a serve over the net. Sad for the sport in Kentucky, and why I say the state tournament will be abolished in the future. It's a Louisville invitation, but only two schools can win the title. Why invite 16 teams?

The only sport worse than volleyball in regards to championships is boys swimming.

 

While it is is true that more girls are playing club volleyball I'd be curious to see how those numbers are dispersed throughout the entire state. You need population and that limits much of the state for strong club programs.

 

I don't see the Louisville dominance with the occasional NDA strong effort from ending any time soon.
