Sounds like Holmes needs to get some easy buckets off the press ... Limited offensive options being exposed?

Kunkel from Cooper and Ohmer from Scott for sure, but Zion Harmon is the #1 ranked prospect his grade IN THE COUNTRY... definitely worth time to check him out....

Exhibit 1A about the importance of shooting free throws. Holmes had a lead, tried to hold the ball and turned it over a couple of times and missed free throws, then Highlands got the lead and when Holmes fouled, Vories turned out the lights. There was one other play from that game that I remember, at one point Dicky got the ball at about midcourt and saw Bob Muntis all alone back on defense, and he went right at him, 5'10" trying to jump over 6'10", and the way he took off I really thought he was trying to throw it down. Muntis went up and made a play on the ball, and I think Beal wound up scoring, but it wasn't the posterizing moment that Dicky intended. Just always stuck with me all these years.....

Doug Schloemer baseline jumpshot in 1977 to send Holmes back to the Sweet Sixteen, denying Newport its first regional championship in decades (I think they had to wait until 2009 when they defeated, ironically, the defending state champion Holmes). Not only was it a last second shot to win the region 77-76, it followed a controversial call where many, many people believe to this day that the ball went out of bounds off Schloemer's leg with 2 seconds to go, only to have the officials give it back to Holmes under their own basket, setting the stage for his last second shot.

I did the same thing, and it is remarkable how close it was. Referees don't get enough credit for these tight calls .... had it been really close the other way, many would be calling for his head. This is really tough to do, AT GAME SPEED, and I am impressed that far more often than not they get it right, without the benefit of slowed down, frame by frame analysis. Nice job fellas.

I think Cole was important to CCH for many, many reasons... true that he was a great leader, put up big individual numbers while always being a team first guy, took the big shot, took over a big game when he needed to the last two years when he had younger guys around him, all the winning attributes you want to see in a team leader. There is one other attribute that I think is important, though, because when Scott Ruthsatz was hired and came here from New Jersey, he brought a talented son and instantly began building a tremendous program at CCH, and part of building that program was attracting very, very talented players from Cincinnati. Not casting any aspersions here, and I don't see anything wrong with it. I just think it is easier for the CovCath faithful (like every other school) to stay behind a program when there is a traditional connection, and Cole provided that. For four years he was the link to CovCath tradition as it transitioned into a powerhouse of state and even national prominence. There are other "traditional" CCH players in the program now who are special athletes, but I believe it has helped keep the CCH community actively supportive of the program because Cole, a CCH "legacy", was the de facto leader of this great assembly of talent. This is my opinion, only, and I am not a CCH guy, but I think that is a very natural mindset for a fan base to have. Congratulations on a great career Cole and good luck going forward.

Two district runners up battling for the right to represent the 9th .... how often does THAT happen? Seriously, should be a great game. For Cooper, Lexi Held has be to assertive, needs to attack and look to score like she did against Highlands. Against Holy Cross, she was a little passive at times. For Holmes to pull off back to back regional championships, I think they need to shoot 40 percent or better and stay out of foul trouble. They surely will create turnovers, but they have to put it in the basket. The big floor hasn't seemed to bother them, even though they only play 6-7 girls from end line to end line, but you never know. Good luck both teams. Whoever prevails has a great chance, I think, to get through the first 2 rounds of the state tournament where I think they could meet the 8th region champion, perhaps Simon Kenton. Looking way ahead here, I know, but that could be interesting.....

That's correct. My apologies to Tyra. I just typed a long response about why I believed what I was told - because that is not generally in my nature - but I think its best that I just say sorry and drop it.

There is an exception under the KHSAA bylaw that allows an exception if there was a documented learning disability while in grade school, so I was asking if anyone can confirm if (1) she is in fact 19 (I was told that by a very reliable source who should know ... But for full disclosure I have not seen a birth certificate) and (2) is she going to play as an exception to the bylaw.

Right or wrong, they have only played 7 players all year. Having seen them a few teams, with 40+ point leads and the starters on the floor at the final horn, I wonder why those last 5 kids are even there and dressed on the bench. Looking at the stats on the website it looks like they literally NEVER play. The other question that I think is fair is whether Tyra McClendon Engleman is eligible to play as a senior ... At least if it is accurate that she is already 19 years old and still classifies as a junior. Anyone know the answer to this?

Well done. I think my only disagreement might be Lloyd-Newport... I see that as a pick 'em.

I don't know all the seniors at Highlands but I will say that you had a heckuva year this year and enjoyed watching you play the time I saw you this year. I am really glad Jenna Martin got the opportunity to finish her senior year there. She's fun to watch and she helped make Highlands, at times, the top team in the region IMO. Good luck girls. You got a bit of bad luck, drawing Cooper in the first round, but it shouldn't take away from the season you had.

How do you get "dialed in" to these other guys? Because I'll tell ya, Holy Cross having a link to a widget on BGP that gets you right in is a tremendous convenience.

The other thread about PA guys got me wondering about the underrated and underappreciated guys that do radio of high school games, and I want them to know that there are a lot of us that make up a "silent majority", who don't email or call in but frequently listen in when we can't be there. In the old days, there was only Dale McMillan and Hardy Tribble (maybe Mel Webster as well?) who did radio, and they were in the tough spot of having to choose one game per night. Actually, I am surprised there aren't more guys taking advantage of this technology, but I wanted to shout out to the guys that I do know and would like to know the names of the guys I don't know. Terry Niehaus, the voice of the Holy Cross Indians, and Mark Wehry, Covington Catholic, both do an outstanding job IMO, are prepared and do more research on opponents than people realize. Also, I have listened to Brad Fennell do Highlands football in the past, and I know he has a great following. Pendleton County has coverage I believe, and I would like to hear if there are others and who they are.

Wow. Yeah, we might disagree among us about the level of involvement of a PA guy, but I think we would all agree that when PA starts articulating player's thoughts and motivations, we've crossed the line!

Honestly, I don't generally notice the level of involvement of a PA guy, but the fella at Beechwood seems to do more play by play than others ("Smith will inbound the ball", "nice assist by Johnson", etc.). Do others do that and I just haven't noticed? He does a nice job.

Highlands drew the short straw, and got Cooper, the district runner up from one of the state's toughest districts. The winner of this one gets either Holy Cross or Lloyd and then would perhaps have to face Conner or Holmes from the bottom half of the bracket. This should be a good matchup, well coached and talented girls on both sides. Good luck.
