I heard once thar in the mid-90s that they had 60+ kids on the team every year.

The fact that they had enough for a JV and Frosh team, even if it became a hybrid, is huge. Those reps for younger guys is beyond valuable for the future. I'd love to see them get above .500 this year.

What would happen, hypothetically, if Fort Knox closed? Where do those kids then go to school? Would it be to North Hardin? The moving on and off of base is such a hard thing for any military school. Heck, 5 years ago, Fort Campbell was playing for a chance to play in the state finals. And this year, they won 2 games.

I guess the biggest upside is that they didn't have to forfeit any games in 2015, unlike 14. I don't know if there were increased numbers or decreased injuries, or some combination of both. I'd like to think that schools like FK can have success, but with numbers like they have, it's hard to have great success on a consistent basis.

I didn't realize that he didn't go for 2. That seems to be the least controversial decision in all of high school athletics, now. I know plenty of teams who always go for 2. Plenty of good coaches who believe in that, as well. I get not punting. I get always onside kicking it. But, if you're doing those things, I would have assumed you would have a wealth of cute trick plays you run for every 2 point conversion.

Heck, I could be completely wrong on this. But I seem to remember a late 4th down call to punt. But, barrel aged products since then might be changing things. Maybe it was a completely different game that I've gotten the teams mixed up on. Maybe I'm just a crazy person........

A few years ago, when Highlands lost to Collins in the state championship (2013?). Highlands had the ball late in the game around mid-field and it was 4th and 5 or less. I was watching the game at the stadium, and I said they should go for it. Everybody around me said they should punt. Smart football says punt and play defense and win the game. If Highlands had of gone for it, and gotten it, they would have won the game. They punted, and Collins has a ring because of that. If they hadn't of gained the yards needed, what would have happened? Collins could have scored and won. Instead, they punted and they scored and won. I think if you're within 60 yards of scoring, I don't punt. If it's anything 3 or shorter, I don't punt. If it's late in the game, and I can ice it by getting that 1st? I won't punt. If my offense has really explosive ability? Won't punt. If my punter is really not that great? Won't punt. I think there is a trend of more 4th down attempts, and that is going to grow over the next several years. I have 100% confidence in that. I know, I know. "What if you're at you're own 2 and it's 4th and 50?" That's fine, I don't really know of a lot of times that really happens, but it can happen and has happened. But for me, the situations in which I would opt to go for it instead of punting are far more numerous. And if anything, I'd go with a quick kick that probably won't have much of a return opportunity, from the QB out of a regular offensive set. And, I'm not trying to criticize anyone from Highlands or anything like that. I have the highest level of respect for what they do as a team and as a program as a whole. I was just using this because it was one of the biggest moments I could think of.

Isn't the counter to that is that you're giving yourself additional opportunities to score? I mean, at the most base level of thinking about it, by knowing you're going for it, you need to get 2.5 yards per play, instead of 3.3. Anyone who knows football knows the value of every yard, and the need to get almost a full yard less is huge.

Didn't we have this exact same argument about a year ago? I say never punt, but that's just me.

I was interested in the distance he drove between Somerset and Caverna every day. According to my GPS, it's 90+ miles one way. So, he was putting over 1000 miles on his car per week. His dedication to that job has to be commended. I can't think of many people who would be willing to do that.

I've known of kids who played football who go on Fall Break during the season and then miss a game. I'm not saying that coaches should be able to ban a player from doing something outside like a trip or vacation or something, but, I think the in-season sport should probably have an issue if the kid isn't committed enough to stay for the stuff.

I once heard that Boston stuck his tongue out to someone in traffic when he was 8 years old. I hope he's learned from that, otherwise he's in for a long haul. But, in all honesty, everything I've seen or heard or experience with him, he's a good guy who is a really hard worker. His kids seem to really like and respect him, and in turn, play very hard for him. Best of luck to him at Hendo! Solid hire, in my opinion.

I don't know about basketball or baseball, but I do know that Baden is the official ball for volleyball. But, I believe Mountain Ref is right. It's going to be whomever puts out the most money. If Nike wants it to be their ball and the coaches want a Nike ball, yet Rawlings puts out more money. Guess who the official ball is going to be? Rawlings. The coaches who don't want it to be Rawlings should just hope that they get out bid. EDIT: It appears that Rawlings is the choice for baseball, and that Worth is the choice for softball. Or, at the very least, they're both the platinum level sponsor featured on the KHSAA site. And it's Select Sport for soccer.

I know they're doing interviews within the next 2 weeks, but I'm not sure when an announcement would be made. Any of the names I've heard have all just been pure speculation, so I can't confirm anything. But I've heard several asst coaches from schools in that area have applied.

Didn't they drop out of district play last year? If so, are they back in this year?

I've heard from someone in Columbia that the kids are in the weight room every day with several of the asst. coaches. I don't know the validity of that, but I trust my source. From everything I've heard since Gay resigned, it seems they were/are a pretty close staff, so I'd assume that a lot of things have remained in place. But, that's just my speculation. And I have heard nothing about who the hire might be.

One of the greatest crimes in the history of society, was the fact that McCracken didn't opt to be the Krakens. I really am not a fan of any of the generic nicknames, and I fully support any school changing their name from one. I've always been surprised and a little sad that no school in KY has the miners name. I mean, it's a pretty major part of a lot of communities, I think it should have happened by now.

I would drop everything I'm doing, adopt as many kids as I could and move to Lexington, just so they could be HST Gonzo's!

Really? I feel like I remember seeing some places building their new fields, and they started the turf early in the year and got it done around August. Maybe I'm just losing my mind.

I would personally love to see a POY and Mr. Football in each class. So many times good players who would win it just about every other year are stuck behind "the guy." A universal POY would also be really really nice to have, as well. I like seeing players get recognized for their on-field accomplishments, especially those State Finals games when the coach and player are on the field. To me, it's just usually a really neat and special moment for everybody involved with it.

Turf takes what, roughly, about 6-8 months to completely install and be ready?

After their injuries last year, I'm glad to see that they have new faces stepping in and stepping up. A healthy C-ville team last year had the potential to be really fast and really scary.
