Why do we not have a Mr. Football for every class in the state? Its seems unfair that a kid can put up very good numbers versus tougher competition (say in class 5A or 6A) but not get the recognition of being named Mr. Football when another kid puts up slightly better numbers against weaker competition (say in 2A or lower). Im just picking these classes as an example, no underlying message here. Since these kids dont compete much across class distinction (I know a few do) why not name a Mr. Football for each class. Seems more logical to me. How would we ever know if a Class A or Class AA Mr. Football (again just an example here) would have put up those numbers on Trinity Team against their schedule. Or even a on a strong 3A such as Belfry against their schedule. Just a thought and wonder what the BGP community thinks about this question. I think if we can have 6 state champions, we should name 6 Mr. Football's. Is this line of thinking out of the question? Is there more into the voting for Mr. Football than I realize?

 

We have no class distinctions for Miss Basketball, Mr. Basketball, or the baseball awards therefore all schools have the opportunity to schedule and compete against the rest of the state in both the regular and post seasons to prove their worth if they think they have one of the top players in the state. To me, Mr. Football seems to penalize the kids at bigger school's as they play against tougher competition.

Isn't there already a "player of the year" for each class? I seem to recall Jacob Russell from Anderson Co being named 5A offensive player of the year his senior year 4 or 5 years ago...or am I just dreaming that?

Someone will hopefully correct me if Im wrong, but I believe there is a POY for each class but it is not unified (i.e. it comes from CJ, LHL, media from that region, coaches from that class, etc.). Perhaps if it were voted on and standardized we could have a clear representative from each class that would compete for Mr. Football. Or at least clearer representative.

I would personally love to see a POY and Mr. Football in each class. So many times good players who would win it just about every other year are stuck behind "the guy."

 

A universal POY would also be really really nice to have, as well. I like seeing players get recognized for their on-field accomplishments, especially those State Finals games when the coach and player are on the field. To me, it's just usually a really neat and special moment for everybody involved with it.
