Understand Spartan Power.. it depends on the parents and the 'village' surrounding the child. With the current security issues amidst JCPS I understand more parents really looking at the option of private schools. There is money out there for use (grant in aid, academic scholarships,..etc), you just have to look and make a decision as what is in the best interest of the child. Is it worth it? Having been a public school junkie and now have kids, I reluctantly say it is, but depends on the situation and child.

Well stated Retropop! The privates have to find students to fill the seats, whereas, the publics simply want to keep them filled. Don't know if open enrollment is the absolute way to go--may need to find a plausible medium. I've seen public school coaches ridicule private school coaches for obtaining kids as if he/she 'owned' them and visa versa. Educational opportunities are about choices, not ownership. It is the choice of the player and/or parents to make...not us.

Hard to say.. the guard twin was playing over half of the game and the post twin was like second off the bench, but not starting. The youngsters were more athletic but lacked leadership early in the summer, but that changed a bit.

Wow = YES... Sutherland is currently enrolled at North Bullitt. Twins are enrolled at SHA but currently are not conditioning/playing with team.

Interesting since the Ballard job is now open.

SHA has lost 3 kids (seniors)..one has transferred and the other two have opted not to play

Which is exactly why we need to continue to have a tryout OR create a better pool system to compete with Indiana. Indiana has a camp/farm system that they use to identify and organize talent from sophomore class and above... Been doing it that way for over 15 years..

Actually.. Any public school is now a feeder for ANY catholic high school. No different than any public high school receives kids from private schools. Open enrollment means open opportunities. There are talented kids from Johnson MS who are playing at Manual, Male, Holy Cross, PRP.. etc.. Never knew a HS to 'own' MS kids based on geography? Could be wrong.. But doubt it...

You mean from Johnson MS? Yes.. She never attended Butler, but played as an 8th grader.

Actually.. The middle school player had played for an AAU program affiliated with a Louisville private school PRIOR to attending CAL. Relationship already existed; however, IMO, their dealings with Costner did not encourage her to remain at CAL for HS. Also, other MS players left for other high schools which may have prompted the decision.

SHA used to play Male every year until Male opted not to play based on master scheduling. Can do more boy/girl options versus all girl scheduling (less revenue). I am sure the two teams will be playing each other again. They did play over the summer.

NO CALcium leaving, especially with the loss of the coach. I gaurantee it ... Why leave when you can play and be star and not compete to play?

Final..... Ruffin had 22 pts, 17 rebs, and 5 assists. Merriweather had 16 pts, 9 rebs, and 5 assists. Samsel had 9 pts, Maggie Colley with 6 pts, and Johnson with 5 pts. NCC was led by Kiernan with 20 pts and 12 rebs. NCC shot 28% for the game. F

SHA came back from a 13 point halftime defecit to beat Montverde Academy 61-56.. Merriweather had 24 pts, 13 rebs, and 7 assists. Ruffin had 15 pts, 16 rebs and Gretchen Samsel added 12 pts.

Butler needs to move up (2) spots.. Ballard needs to move down (3) spots and Manual move down (1) spot based on results. Butler, IMO, is the team to beat in the 6th region- Jaylen Penn, who is only a freshman, is the real deal.

SHA's quick tempo and endurance in the second half doomed the Lady Knights. Team had 17 assists for the game while forcing 17 turnovers. The dynamic duo of Daijia Ruffin & Raven Merriweather continued with 26 pts/10 rebs for Daijia and 20 pts/8 rebs for Raven. Lexington Catholic was led by Rachel Blake with 19 pts and Suzanne Miller chipped in with 13 pts. It 'appeared' that the Lady Knights had no answer to the extra pass within their matchup zone defense.

Excellent game as both teams played well considering it was the Opening game for both teams. For Highlands, with experience through games, those young birds will improve--now find a leader for that team and watch out! For SHA, nice comeback for #20,..played a great overall game and kept her teammates together. She seemed to be having fun, especially coming back from her injury. Point guard (#1) played decent and surprised by the lack of points from Ruffin (#25). If they are all clicking, SHA can be tough to beat.
