Great to see Region 1 have 2 teams in the top 20. Not sure when the last time that happened. Both teams are very deserving.

BluegrassPreps.com 1st Region Boys Basketball Review Week 7 Not a whole lot changed this past week as the weather did not cooperate and most teams only played 1 game. Things will be much of the same this week as even more snow fell in Western Kentucky. Hopefully the roads can get cleared and basketball will get underway again, especially the All “A” Classic where state contender Mayfield will open play! 1. Paducah Tilghman – Coach Roderick Thomas BGP #13 2017-18 record:14-3 Weeks record: 5-1-¬ Last Week’s Rank: 1 -- Paducah Tilghman dominated Marshall County 74-52 with balanced scoring. The Tornado had 4 players score in double figures lead by Jerome Reed with 18. Tilghman is scheduled to play in the Superman Classic this week. 2. Mayfield – Coach Chris Guhy 2017-18 record: 13-4 Week’s Record: 3-0 Last Week’s Rank: 2 Mayfield was one of the few teams that got in 3 games this past week. They beat a very good John Hardin team 71-64. The Cardinals got a great game from Desean Jones who scored 26 points. The Guthries add 26 together. Statement game for Mayfield. They also defeated Ballard Memorial and South Fulton, TN in easy wins. The Cardinals will open play in the All “A” Classic which they will be heavily favored to win, however a big game with Paducah Tilghman looms next Tuesday. 3. Graves County – Coach Joshua Frick 2017-18 record: 12-5 Week’s Record: 0-0 Last Week’s Rank: 3 Graves were unable to play a game this past week. They have the Superman Classic this week weather permitting, then a big game against Hopkinsville next Tuesday. 4. McCracken County – Coach Burlin Brower 2017-18 record: 11-5 Week’s Record: 0-0 Last Week’s Rank: 4 McCracken was another team unable to play any games this week. They have Marshall County and McClean County on the schedule for this week. 5. Marshall County – Terry Birdsong 2017-18 record: 9-7 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Week’s Rank: 5 Marshall lost its only game they played this past week to Paducah Tilghman. The lost was expected, but not by the 22 point margin it ended up being. McCracken County game will be big if played on Saturday. They also host a team from Panama City Beach, Florida on Sunday. 6. Murray – Coach Dior Curtis 2017-18 record: 8-10 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Week’s Rank: 6 Murray played very well in a 9 point loss to University Heights. The Tigers hung in with one of the best teams from Region 2. They will not play again till next week against Calloway County. 7. Carlisle County – Coach Brian O’Neil 2017-18 record: 8-9 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Week’s Rank: 7 The Comets easily won their match against Dongola, IL 76-48. 12 different players scored for Carlisle County. Carlisle will begin the All “A” Classic this week. 8. Calloway County – Coach Brad Cleaver 2016-17 record: 7-10 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Week’s Rank: 7 Calloway won their only game this past week against Trigg County 49-43. Garrett Scott led the Lakers with 19 points and Aaron Dawson added 16. They will play a team from Florida and then Hopkins County Central this week. 9. Ballard Memorial – Coach Marla Cooper 2017-18 record: 7-6 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Week’s Rank: 9 Ballard lost their only game of the week to Mayfield. It wasn’t much of a game as they lost by 36 points. They hope for better results as they start the All “A” Classic this week. 10. Fulton County – Coach Jamie Madding 2017-18 record: 6-8 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Week’s Rank: 12 The Pilots played a close game and won this time against Hickman County 55-52. They were led by Camden Aldridge with 14 points. They will have a touch match with Carlisle County to open the All “A” Classic this Saturday. 11. Hickman County – Coach Jimmy Long 2017-18 record: 5-11 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Week’s Rank: 10 Hickman lost their only game to Fulton County in a very close ball game. They will play in the All “A” Classic starting Friday. 12. St. Mary – Coach Greg Overstreet 2017-18 record: 6-11 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Week’s Rank: 11 St. Mary was one of the few teams that were able to play more than one game this week and they made the most of it defeating both Fulton City and Community Christian. The will start the All “A” Classic this week.. 13. Christian Fellowship – Coach Tyler Ryan 2017-18 record: 4-8 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Week’s Rank: 13 The Eagles have defeated rivals CCA 68-34 before falling to Egyptian, IL 70-60. They will play Union County and Heritage Academy this week. 14. Fulton City – Coach Jon Dillard 2017-18 record: 1-12 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Week’s Rank: 14 The Bulldogs woes continue as their losing streak is now at 12 games. They lost to St. Mary 53-43. 15. Community Christian Paducah – Coach Daniel Durrett / Rhet McMullen 2017-18 record: 0-12 Week’s Record: 0-3 Last Week’s Rank: 15 The losing streak continues and stands at 53 games dating back to Jan of 2016. They lost 2 more games this week and will open play against Hickman County in the All “A” Classic. Player of the Week Desean Jones, Mayfield – 26 points on 7-10 shooting from the field including 4 of 5 from 3. He also pulled down 6 rebounds in the big win against John Hardin. 1st Region ALL “A” CLASSIC Tournament. Mayfield is the big, big favorite in this competition. In fact, Mayfield has to be one of the favorites to win the All “A” State Tournament. Anything but winning the whole things may feel like a let down. There are no Region 1 teams that should even give the Cardinals a close game. Due to the weather, there were not many games to really talk about in Region 2 this past week. Inclement weather wiped out all Friday and Saturday games, and the UHA/Christian County game was postponed until Jan 17 if the weather will hold in check. The two teams will pick up at halftime with UHA a 35-32 lead. 1. Christian County – Coach Kerry Stovall *BGP #20 2017-18 record: 10-5 Week’s Record:0-0 Last Weeks Rank: 1 Christian County officially played no games this past week. Their game against UHA was postponed until this Wednesday at 7pm. That is the only game scheduled for this week right now. 2. University Heights Academy – Coach Grant Shouse 2017-18 record: 11-4 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Weeks Rank: 2 The Blazers whipped up on Fort Campbell with a score of 82-49. The will continue their game against Christian County this Wednesday. They will then prepare for the All “A” Classic. 3. Madinsonville North Hopkins – Coach Matt Beshear 2017-18 record: 13-5 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Weeks Rank: 5 The Maroons won their only game this week, a blowout win at Caldwell County 83-57. Not much on the agenda till next week when they play Lyon County, Hopkins County Central, and Owensboro. 4. Hopkinsville – Coach Tim Haworth 2017-18 record: 6-10 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Weeks Rank: 3 Hopkinsville lost a close game to Warren Central, again without all their weapons. Johnson was out with the flu. However the Tigers got seemingly good news this week that Shorty Cager will officially return to the team after his suspension was reduced. Talent wise this makes the Tigers the best team in Region 2, but can they actually prove that on the court. 5. Henderson County – Coach Tyler Smithhart 2017-18 record: 7-7 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Weeks Rank: 6 Henderson County defeated Webster convincingly 75-55. This boost the Colonels up into the number 5 position in the region. Henderson will play Evansville North this week. 6. Webster County – Coach Jon Newton 2017-18 record: 12-6 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Weeks Rank: 4 In the only game that had any effect on the rankings, Webster lost at home to Henderson County by 20 points. Webster is becoming the Jekyll and Hyde team of Region 2. They are to play Hopkins County Central, McClean County, and Russellville this week. 7. Hopkins County Central – Coach Lee James 2017-18 record: 10-7 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Weeks Rank: 7 The Storm was one of the few teams that were able to get in 2 games this week. They defeated Fort Campbell 86-60 and Frederick Fraize 75-24. This week they will play Webster County, Trigg County, and Calloway County. 8. Union County – Coach Shane Smith 2017-18 record: 7-9 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Weeks Rank: 8 Union lost at home to Livingston Central which would have allowed them to lose a spot in the rankings if LC didn’t then lose to Lyon County. They will play Hardin, IL, Christian Fellowship, and Evansville Day, IN this week. 9. Livingston Central – Coach Bill McNamara 2017-18 record: 11-8 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Weeks Rank: 9 The Cardinals got a big win at Union County 65-52. Cameron Dean threw down 31 points including 5 three pointers in the win. It was a big win for LC. Then they turn around 2 days later and lose to a 2 win Lyon County by double digits. They will have another chance to prove they are more the former team than the latter as they rematch Lyon County at the All “A” Classic. 10. Caldwell County – Coach Daniel Kukahiko 2017-18 record: 7-8 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Weeks Rank: 11 Caldwell County took a big loss against Madisonville in the only game they played this week. They will play Crittenden County in the All “A” Classic this week. 11. Dawson Springs – Coach Chad Burgett 2017-18 record: 3-10 Week’s Record:0-1 Last Weeks Rank: 10 The Panthers were only able to play one game this week against Crittenden County. They were unable to win this game at home, losing 73-70. They will play Ft Campbell and Frederick Fraize this week. 12. Fort Campbell – Coach Stacey Harrell 2017-18 record: 2-8 Week’s Record: 0-2 Last Weeks Rank: 12 The Falcons haven’t won any game since returning to play after a 3.5 week layoff. They lost this week to Hopkins County Central and University Heights. They will play Dawson Springs up next. 13. Trigg County – Coach Payton Croft 2017-18 record: 9-6 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Weeks Rank: 13 Trigg County lost a clost game to Calloway County 49-43 before winning a close game against Crittenden Couty 51-50. Both games were at home. Trigg will play Hopkins County Central before play CCA and Fulton County. 14. Crittenden County – Coach Denis Hodge 2017-18 record: 4-10 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Weeks Rank: 15 The Rockets had a better week defeating Dawson Springs but then losing a very close game to Trigg County. They will play Caldwell County in the All “A” Classic. 15. Lyon County – Coach Jeff Embrey 2017-18 record: 3-10 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Weeks Rank: 14 Lyon is on a 2 game winning streak after defeating Livingston Central 48-39. They will rematch Livingston at the All “A” Classic. Player of the Week Cameron Dean, Livingston Central, scored 31 points, 5 threes, and pulled down 8 rebounds in a win versus Union County. ALL “A” CLASSIC Tournament Preview (at Crittenden County) Lyon County vs Livingston Central 1/16 Livingston should be the easy favorite in this game, but after losing to Lyon County this past week, they may not get past the first round. It was probably a bad game for LC, but Lyon will come to play again so Cameron Dean and Seth Hosick should both come ready to play. Caldwell County vs Crittenden County 1/16 Caldwell is the favorite in this game, however, Crittenden has been playing better basketball lately. Derrin Boyd (22 ppg) will lead the Tigers when they play in the first round. BYE – University Heights The Blazers are the huge favorite to win the Region 2 All “A” Classic tournament. In fact it would be one of the biggest upsets in the state if they do not reach the state tournament. UHA have the chance to win the whole thing if they play their best basketball. It is easy to question cancellations as a fan. It is a whole different thing when you are the one having to make the decision. I have been there and it is tough.

He missed the Warren Central game because of the flu. He is not 100%, probably closer to 70% or so. He is playing limited minutes in games when he does play. Not sure why he is even playing if not mostly healed. Although he did put up 24 points in 20 minutes in his first game back. But he hasn't been on the floor that long in any game since.

Considering that Hopkinsville has 12 games left, it may be enough for them to get their chemistry to make a run. On paper, they are no doubt the best team in Region 2 when healthy. But we also know the best team doesn't always win, especially in Region 2.

Christian County cancels all extracurricular activities if school is canceled. Here is the kicker though. If school is canceled on Friday, all activities over the weekend are also cancelled, nor can teams travel to any activity. That second part baffles me.

I wish more teams focused more on defense. That isn't to take away from the offensive side of the ball. I have seen too many teams it seems their total focus is offense and they play defense half halfheartedly. I love seeing hard gritty defenses balances with fast paced fundamental offense.

This is the weakest overall region 2 has been in quite some time. Usually at least 2 teams are either in the state top 20 rankings, or close to. Most of the top they are in the top 10. This year only Christian County has been ranked and they will most likely drop out after this week. While District 8 is still a top the region, other Western Kentucky regions have shown they are better. Nothing has changed much within the region, but a number 1 vs number 2 is this week as Christian County goes to UHA. This matchup pits two of the state’s top players in Ware and Tandy. Should be a great show! 1. Christian County – Coach Kerry Stovall *BGP #20 2017-18 record: 10-5 Week’s Record: 2-4 Last Weeks Rank: 1 Christian County has hit its first bump in the road and it’s a pretty big one. The Colonels went to the Poplar Bluff Showdown and struggled to play consistently in their first two games losing both. They took out their frustrations on a team from Bradley Tech, WI. Then coming back to Kentucky things got worse. They were shockingly dominated by McCracken County losing 61-44. The next day they played much better, but still lost at home to an excellent Paducah Tilghman team they defeated earlier this year. Ware is no doubt still the leader of this team, and if he isn’t getting 30+ points in a game, there is a high probability Christian County loses. We will really find out what Christian County is made of the next few weeks as their in state schedule gets pretty tough. Huge game Tuesday, Jan 9 against University Heights for the top of Region 2. They also play John Hardin, Bowling Green, and Hopkinsville down the line. 2. University Heights Academy – Coach Grant Shouse 2017-18 record: 9-4 Week’s Record: 4-1 Last Weeks Rank: 2 The Blazers had a rough go of it in the Paducah Tilghman Christmas Tournament. But had a better Traditional Bank Holiday Classic in Lexington. They did lose the opener to Bryan Station, but then defeated Floyd Central and Franklin County. They then flexed their muscles in a showdown versus Madisonville and then traveled to Southwestern to win there as well. KyKy Tandy is arguably the best junior in the state of Ky and he shows why every game. He is averaging 33 ppg and is a pleasure to watch. Teammates Taquan Hollowell and Drew McGowan have been good contributers, but they really need 1 more (KJ Crump maybe) to really pour in some points to help if they have a chance to win the All “A” Classic. Again the big game for UHA is Tuesday, Jan 9 at home against Christian County. 3. Madinsonville North Hopkins – Coach Matt Beshear 2017-18 record: 12-5 Week’s Record: 3-2 Last Weeks Rank: 5 The Maroons are a young team who are having great games and then some learning games. That was evident in their past few games. They looked great against Louisville Central winning 60-53, but then not so good against LCA. They then played one of their best games of the year in whooping Hopkinsville, winning for the first time in years, but then were whooped by University Heights. The win against Hopkinsville moves them up to third in the region, but they will have to continue to improve to stay there. They will play Caldwell Co, Dawson Springs, and Henderson Co this week. They should win all of those. Madisonville has been led by the surprising improvement of Ksuan Casey (15.4) and Cade Cunningham (13.6). They didn’t average 14 points combined last year. That improvement is great news for the Maroons hopefully will continue moving forward. 4. Hopkinsville – Coach Tim Haworth 2017-18 record: 69 Week’s Record: 2-4 Last Weeks Rank: 3 What has happened to Hopkinsville? That is the question all over the state. While injuries have been a big part of their downfall, missing Steven Cager has been bigger than even Coach Haworth thought it would be. Jalen Johnson is only about 50% and still has limited minutes, and Nicholas is still on the mend. The Tigers struggles have dropped them to number 4 in the rankings, the worse they have been since 2010. The Tigers took some big hits in Nashville’s Next Level Hoops Fest. They then came back and played maybe their worst game of the year to Madisonville. Fort Campbell game couldn’t come quick enough as they destroyed them 101-44, and then had a quality win against Marshall County. They will play against an excellent Warren Central team before a few tournaments. 5. Webster County – Coach Jon Newton 2017-18 record: 12-5 Week’s Record: 4-2 Last Weeks Rank: 4 It looks like Webster County had a good week when you look at the win column, but they were supposed to win the games against Atherton and Lyon. They barely escaped at Union County winning 67-66 in overtime. And then it caught up with them losing at Caldwell County 62-58 again in overtime. These are two teams, while improving, Webster should have handled well. At this point in the season, the Trojans are struggling and need to figure out why, and fix it. For that reason they have dropped in the rankings. They should be favored in all their upcoming games the rest of January, we will see if they can come away with wins in those games, or will the struggle continue. They will need Chatman Ellis (21 ppg), Tyler Camplin (13.8), and Malachi Douglas (13.1) to step up their games for Webster to make noise in the 2nd. 6. Henderson County – Coach Tyler Smithhart 2017-18 record: 6-7 Week’s Record: 2-3 Last Weeks Rank: 6 Henderson County’s games were much like Madisonville, feast or famine. They won good games against Knott County Central and Muhlenberg County, but struggled mightily against Madison Central, Walton-Verona, and Dunbar. They struggled to score in all of those games, only 30 against Dunbar. Upcoming games can really help the Colonels. If they can win games again Webster, Union Co, and Madisonville, it will boost their rankings and their confidence. Coach Smithhart is a great coach, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this team turn it around quickly. They will need Issac Aglin (12.7) and Kale Gaither (12.9) to continue to improve and hope to get some offense from other contributors as well. 7. Hopkins County Central – Coach Lee James 2017-18 record: 8-7 Week’s Record: 3-2 Last Weeks Rank: 7 The Storm season looked like it had turned around after a 5 game losing straight when they won 3 straight. Then they ran in to the Purples of Bowling Green and got beat by 50 points, only scoring 29 for the game. Good News? They came back the next night and scored 88 in beating Murray. In fact they scored 70+ points in the next 4 games winning 3 of them. HCC will play Fort Campbell and Frederick Fraize next. They should win both of those, then they will play a surging Caldwell County, which will be a good litmus test for both teams. The Storm is led by Tyler Mann (16.4) and Keyairreon Hobgood (10.4) 8. Union County – Coach Shane Smith 2017-18 record: 7-8 Week’s Record: 1-4 Last Weeks Rank: 8 Union is trending in the wrong direction right now. After a rough Holiday tournament where they went 1-2, the Braves dropped 2 in region games to Webster (in OT) and to Hopkins County Central. Union really needed to win one of those to show they are on their way up and can compete with the midlevel teams in the region. They still can, but competing and winning are two different things. Union still boasts two really good players in double/double machine Logan Thomas (21/13) and Elex Dunford (16.6). Marqualio King helps out as well, but then there is a big drop in play after those 3. If Union can find one more significant contributor, they can pull out some of these wins. They will play a big game against Caldwell County, Henderson, and Livingston Central this week. 9. Livingston Central – Coach Bill McNamara 2017-18 record: 10-7 Week’s Record: 3-2 Last Weeks Rank: 9 The Cardinals got wins against Cumberland County, Grayson County, and Carlisle County, while dropping games to LaRue County and surprisingly to Trigg County. The big upset Livingston had over Webster County earlier in the year seems negated by the loss to Trigg County in double overtime 59-55. Livingston can really make a good run over the next few weeks. They are favorites in the majority of those games and really don’t play an opponent they can’t beat until the regional tournament. A 20 win season is definitely obtainable. 10. Caldwell County – Coach Daniel Kukahiko 2017-18 record: 7-7 Week’s Record: 2-2 Last Weeks Rank: 11 Caldwell County is showing nice grit as they continue to improve this season. After a couple losses in a holiday classic, the Tigers won big at Dawson Springs and then upset Webster Couny 62-58 in double overtime. Caldwell is led by Derrin Boyd is averaging 22.2 ppg, which is impressive. The Tigers can really move up in the standings if they win their games against Madisonville, Hopkins County Central, and Union. 11. Dawson Springs – Coach Chad Burgett 2017-18 record: 3-9 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Weeks Rank: 10 After losing to Caldwell County, Dawson Springs finally snapped their losing streak at 6 in defeating Hickman County 81-75. Justin Putman had 22 and Braxton Cotton had 24 in the win. The Panthers will play Crittenden, Madisonville, and Livingston Central this week. 12. Fort Campbell – Coach Stacey Harrell 2017-18 record: 2-6 Week’s Record: 0-2 Last Weeks Rank: 12 The Falcons hadn’t played a game since December 11. That long layoff didn’t bode well for Ft. Campbell as they got thrashed by Hopkinsville and Christian County. They will have more competitive games against Hopkins Central, and Lyon County, but expect the game against UHA to be another long night. 13. Trigg County – Coach Payton Croft 2017-18 record: 8-5 Week’s Record: 3-1 Last Weeks Rank: 13 Trigg County has looked like a much different team lately winning 5 of their last 6. The only loss coming against Creek Wood, TN. The Wildcats gave a beatdown to Community Christian and then came up with a nice upset at home against Livingston Central in double overtime. The game against Hopkins Central will tell us more about if this Trigg team had truly turned the corner. If they win that game, watch out midlevel teams. Devron Triplet (20 ppg) is the leader for this Wildcats team. 14. Crittenden County – Coach Denis Hodge 2017-18 record: 3-9 Week’s Record: 1-3 Last Weeks Rank: 15 The Rockets had a tough week, losing all their games except to winless Community Christian. Expect more of the same as they play Dawson Springs and Trigg County this week. 15. Lyon County – Coach Jeff Embrey 2017-18 record: 2-10 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Weeks Rank: 14 Lyon lost big to Webster County before winning big at Crittenden County to get out of the last spot in the rankings. They will play Fort Campbell (Contest Game) and Livingston Central next. Player of the Week Seth Hosick, Livingston Central, scored 30 points and pulled down 7 rebounds in a win versus Carlisle County.

BluegrassPreps.com 1st Region Boys Basketball Review Week 5 A few things we have learned about Region 1 teams. The top 2 teams are 2 of the best in the state. Mayfield and Paducah Tilghman can play with almost anyone in the state and are probably the two best teams in Western Kentucky. It’s been a long time since Region 1 could make that claim. The other things we learned, Region 1 teams don’t play well in Holiday tournaments (with a few exceptions). Here are the rankings for the new year! 1. Paducah Tilghman – Coach Roderick Thomas 2017-18 record:13-3 Weeks record: 5-1 Last Week’s Rank: 1 Paducah Tilghman lost the first game of the Lake Cumberland Holiday Classic by 2 points to John Hardin and haven’t lost since. They have defeated Iroquois, Cordia, St. Mary, and Christian County in that time span. The biggest being going to Christian County and defeating them in a close game. JJ Reed led the Tornado with a big 35 points and 10 rebounds along with 3 others scoring in double digits. Overall on the year, Reed continues to lead the team with 18.6 ppg, followed by Rodriguez Thomas at 15.2 ppg. Joe Workman, Michael Laster, and Jordan Harmon all have had major contributions as well. The Tornado don’t have many games over the next 2 weeks. In fact they only play 2 games, but they are against Marshall County and McCracken County, region 1 foes. 2. Mayfield – Coach Chris Guhy 2017-18 record: 10-4 Week’s Record: 3-2 Last Week’s Rank: 2 Mayfield seems to have problems matching up with Valley as they have lost to them twice this year. The most recent a 76-64 loss at Apollo’s Invitational. The other loss came at the hands of Ballard which would normally be expected. The rest of the time, Mayfield has handled the competition very well. The biggest win being against top region 1 team Graves County in overtime 79-73. This cements their place at the top of Region 1 and sets up the big showdown with Paducah Tilghman on Jan 23. The Cardinals have a very balanced scoring team with the Guthries leading the way. Connor Guthrie is averaging 16.6/6.2 and Carson is 14.4/9.1. Desean Jones (12.9) and Kent Trey Matthews (10.8) are also contributing well. No problem games for Mayfield until they meet at Tilghman. 3. Graves County – Coach Joshua Frick 2017-18 record: 12-5 Week’s Record: 3-3 Last Week’s Rank: 3 Graves spend the time after Christmas in Palm Beach Florida playing against some very stiff competition. While there they dropped 2 games while only winning 1. Things were better once returning home soundly defeating McCracken County 54-40 before losing a tough one to Mayfield in overtime. The Eagles have positioned themselves as the number 3 team in region 1 losing to both Tilghman and Mayfield. They are led by Jacob Savage (12.2), Jordyn Naranjo (12.1), and Ryan Mathis (10.9). 4. McCracken County – Coach Burlin Brower 2017-18 record: 11-5 Week’s Record: 1-4 Last Week’s Rank: 4 McCracken has had a tough time since Christmas. They lost games against South Oldham, Newport Central, Graves County and Apollo. Interesting however, they soundly defeated the best team they played in that whole time period, Christian County. The Mustangs struggled to score above 60 points in most of their games. Nathan Stonecipher (16 ppg) leads the team in scoring, while Cameron Cartwright (14.6) and Jackson Sivills (12.9) also contribute. The Mustangs will try to get back on track, but the games do not get easier. They will have to go to region 1 favorite Paducah Tilghman then to Calloway and Marshall. 5. Marshall County – Terry Birdsong 2017-18 record: 9-6 Week’s Record: 3-3 Last Week’s Rank: 5 Marshall County had an up and down time the past couple weeks. They would win one and lose one. They defeated Ohio county, Holmes, and Calloway County, while losing to Warren Central, Cairo, IL, and Hopkinsville. They have 3 very tough games coming up next. Paducah Tilghman, Graves County, and McCracken County, 3 of the top 4 teams in Region 1. If they could win one of those games, it will be considered a good stretch. 6. Murray – Coach Dior Curtis 2017-18 record: 8-9 Week’s Record: 2-3 Last Week’s Rank: 6 Murray has had some difficulty lately winning games, although they were able to pull out two close games against Fulton Co and Ballard Memorial. Before those two games, Murray lost 6 of 7 in the Holiday tournaments. Murray is led by Hunter Utley who is averaging 13.4 ppg. They next couple of games will be against UHA, Calloway Co, and St. Mary. 7. Carlisle County – Coach Brian O’Neil 2017-18 record: 7-9 Week’s Record: 1-4 Last Week’s Rank: 7 The Comets are another team in region 1 that struggled through the Holiday tournaments. Carlisle only won 1 game during that span, and then won their last game against Hickman County. They will play two games against Fulton County before playing McCracken Co next. Carlisle is led by Trey Wilson (16.5) and Michael Thomason (13.6). 8. Calloway County – Coach Brad Cleaver 2016-17 record: 6-10 Week’s Record: 1-5 Last Week’s Rank: 7 Another team that had a terrible holiday run. In fact the Lakers have only won 1 game in their last 9 games. They were able to win 1 game at Fort Walton Beach 62-46, but struggled when they returned to Kentucky, although the games against Marshall County and Todd County Central were close. Jeremy Darnell is the leading scorer at 15.5 ppg and Garrett Scott also contributes 11.1 ppg. Calloway will hope for some wins against Trigg and Murray in the next week. 9. Ballard Memorial – Coach Marla Cooper 2017-18 record: 7-5 Week’s Record: 2-2 Last Week’s Rank: 9 Ballard played some close games during the holidays but were only able to win 2 of them. They defeated Lyon County and St. Mary, while losing to Murray and Crittenden County. The Bombers are no way a contender for region 1, but they are playing competitively against many of the teams in Western Ky. They are led by Bradly Chandler (13 ppg), Dequin Donlow (13.9) and Khalil Griffin (10.1). They will play Mayfield next before winnable games against CCA and St. Mary. 10. Hickman County – Coach Jimmy Long 2017-18 record: 5-10 Week’s Record: 1-2 Last Week’s Rank: 10 Hickman was able to defeat Community Christian handily 78-53 before falling to Carlisle County and Dawson Springs in close games. Dalton Jewell, one of the more prolific scorer in region 1, is averaging nearly 25 ppg. Parker Estes, Deveontae Alexander, and Jackson Midyett all contribute with close to 10 ppg. The Falcons have Fulton County and Fulton City as a warm up to the All “A” Classic. 11. St. Mary – Coach Greg Overstreet 2017-18 record: 4-11 Week’s Record: 1-4 Last Week’s Rank: 13 St. Mary lost all but one of their games during the Holiday tournaments. They were able to defeat Lake County, Tn. They lost to Paducah Tilghman and Ballard Memorial. They play Fulton City, Community Christian, and Fulton Co. They can win all 3 of those games. Hale Sims (16.5) leads scoring for the Vikings, and Gage Mathis adds 11.1. 12. Fulton County – Coach Jamie Madding 2017-18 record: 5-8 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Week’s Rank: 11 The Pilots played a close game with Murray in double overtime before falling 68-64. They went on to handily defeat Fulton City and Lake county, Tn. They will play Hickman County, St. Mary and Carlisle in preparation for the All “A” Classic. Fulton has 3 players averaging more than 10 points per game, Brandon Walker (18.7), Andreous Smith (18.1), and Caleb Kimble (14.9). 13. Christian Fellowship – Coach Tyler Ryan 2017-18 record: 3-7 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Week’s Rank: 14 The Eagles have won 3 of their last 4 games dating back before Christmas. The last two wins were close ones against Fulton City. They will play CCA next and then play an Illinois team before facing off against Fulton City again in the All “A” Classic. Brice Etheridge leads Christian Fellowship with 16.6 ppg and Jesse Covey adds 10.4 ppg. 14. Fulton City – Coach Jon Dillard 2017-18 record: 1-11 Week’s Record: 0-2 Last Week’s Rank: 12 The Bulldogs lost 2 games, one to Christian Fellowship and one to Fulton County. They will play St. Mary and Hickman County for the All “A” Classic. Fulton City doesn’t have anyone averaging more than 10 ppg, and that is one of the reasons they are struggling so much this year. Emmett Hathaway and Cameron Madding are leading the way. 15. Community Christian Paducah – Coach Daniel Durrett / Rhet McMullen 2017-18 record: 0-12 Week’s Record: 0-3 Last Week’s Rank: 15 The losing streak continues and stands at 51 games dating back to Jan of 2016. They are 2-104 in their last 106 games. They keep showing up and playing hard. Maybe this week they will get their 1st win of the season. Player of the Week Jerome Reed, Paducah Tilghman – 36 points on 12-16 shooting from the field including 2 of 2 from 3. Reed also pulled down 10 rebounds in the big win against Christian County.

Not a whole lot of movement this week in the rankings. There was a big upset in Livingston Central defeating Webster County, but it didn’t affect the rankings. There is some improvement in teams near the bottom of the region and could see some movement in the coming weeks. Unless Hopkinsville gets their players back, don’t expect anything from them this year. This currently is a two horse race between UHA and Christian County and the top two scorers in the state. 1. Christian County – Coach Kerry Stovall *BGP #19 2017-18 record: 8-1 Week’s Record: 3-0 Last Weeks Rank: 1 Christian County flexed its muscles in the Baptist Health & Sports Rehab Holiday Classic. The Colonels were not really tested in their first 2 games as Detorrian Ware went off for 47 points in winning 90-70 against Louisville Western. The game against Webster was going well until Ware was injured in the 2nd half after scoring 24 points. The Colonels leader didn’t play in the championship game against Todd County Central, and although the game was closer, CCHS pulled out the win 66-60 behind a balanced effort from Brody (16), Long (15), Mathis (14), and Tandy (10). The injury to Ware doesn’t seem to be serious, but its better he stay off of it during games that don’t matter as much. Better to be fully healed than mostly healed come February. The Colonels will travel to Poplar Bluff, Missouri to play in the Poplar Bluff Showdown. 2. University Heights Academy – Coach Grant Shouse 2017-18 record: 5-3 Week’s Record: 1-2 Last Weeks Rank: 2 The Blazers had a rough go of it in the Paducah Tilghman Christmas Tournament. UHA defeated a decent Seneca team behind 34 points from KyKy Tandy and 21 from Heekwun Dorsey. Tandy then turned around and scored 50 points against a surging Paducah Tilghman team, but it wasn’t enough as UHA lost 88-80. They then had to play the other Region 1 powerhouse Mayfield who are starting to hit their stride, the result was the same, a 78-69 loss. Tandy only scored 36 points in that one. That could be a preview of what to come in the All “A” Classic state tournament. While Tandy really needs a better support cast, UHA is much improved and Tandy very well may be the best player in the state of Kentucky….yes he is that good. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see him play, make it a priority before he graduates next year. The Blazers with play at the Traditional Bank Holiday Classic in Lexington this week. Go watch him. 3. Hopkinsville – Coach Tim Haworth 2017-18 record: 4-5 Week’s Record: 1-2 Last Weeks Rank: 3 It has been 10 years since Hopkinsville has had this poor a start to a basketball season. Yes, this is because the Tigers are without their best players, but you still gotta play the games. The Tigers did get some pieces back for the Paducah Tilghman Christmas Tournament, but not the pieces they need. They returned Toliver, who is considered their 4th best player, but their top 3 are still out. Meanwhile they lost to Louisville Valley and Mayfield before winning against Seneca. They hung with both Valley and Mayfield until the 4th quarter when both pulled away. Things don’t look much brighter as Hopkinsville travels to Nashville to play in the Next Level Hoops Fest. This tournament has some very stiff competition and Coach Hayworth fully expected to be at full strength and highly competitive entering the tournament. Now, they may come away with 3 more losses. 4. Webster County – Coach Jon Newton 2017-18 record: 8-3 Week’s Record: 2-2 Last Weeks Rank: 4 Webster started off the week with a surprising loss at home to Livingston Central. They got the scoring from Camplin, Ellis, and Douglas, but little from anywhere else. They recovered nicely to defeat Todd County Central before losing to Christian County. They finished off the week with a thrashing of Louisville Western. If Webster hadn’t already defeated Madisonville, they would have lost a spot in the standings with the loss to LC. They could have some good success in the upcoming Henry County Invitational. 5. Madinsonville North Hopkins – Coach Matt Beshear 2017-18 record: 9-3 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Weeks Rank: 5 The Maroons bit more off than they could chew against Jeffersonville, In in the Aleris Christmas Tournament. However, they recovered nicely with convincing wins against Cannelton, In and Providence, In. Again the leaders for Madisonville were Ksuan Casey and Cade Cunningham. They are both showing their consistence scoring and play every night for the Maroons. They really need one more piece to really compete with the D8 teams. They head to Lexington next to play in the Central Bank Classic. 6. Henderson County – Coach Tyler Smithhart 2017-18 record: 4-4 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Weeks Rank: 6 Paducah Tilghman has been feasting on Region 2 teams this season, and Henderson was no different. The Colonels took a loss 70-56. Even though Henderson has balanced scoring, they really had no answer for PT on defense. Henderson will now play in the 5 day Traditional Bank Holiday Classic in Lexington. 7. Hopkins County Central – Coach Lee James 2017-18 record: 5-5 Week’s Record: 3-0 Last Weeks Rank: 7 The Storm snapped their 5 game losing streak in impressive fashion scoring their 3 highest outputs of the year in winning the Union County Holiday Tournament. They defeated Union Co 85-69, Caverna 87-79, and Dawson Springs 98-64. Tyler Mann led the Storm by scoring 20+ points in each of those games. Things will get much tougher in the Meijer Holiday Classic as they will open play against Bowling Green. 8. Union County – Coach Shane Smith 2017-18 record: 6-4 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Weeks Rank: 8 Union has been playing well lately, but they laid a big egg against Hopkins County. They recovered nicely to defeat Dawson Springs and Caverna in close, but high scoring games. Logan Thomas continues to shine for the Braves. The big guys continues his second double/double average on the season. Union will now travel to Eldorado, IL to play in the Eldorado Holiday Classic. 9. Livingston Central – Coach Bill McNamara 2017-18 record: 7-5 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Weeks Rank: 9 The Cardinals pulled the first big upset in Region 2 in defeating Webster County. Cameron Head led LC with 16 points. Ten different players scored for the Cardinals in the win. That is teamwork! Livingston loss their next game in overtime to Dyer County in Tennessee before pulling out a nail biter against Calloway County 53-52. They will play in the Magnolia Bank Holiday Classic before heading back to school in January. 10. Caldwell County – Coach Daniel Kukahiko 2017-18 record: 5-5 Week’s Record: 3-1 Last Weeks Rank: 11 Caldwell County is showing some real improvement after having a rough start to the season. The Tigers defeated Carlisle Co 71-58, Glasgow 73-71, and Murray 66-60. They did take a loss to Bullitt Central 64-51. Derrin Boyd is pacing the Tigers in their current rise. If they keep this up, they will shoot back up the standings. They will play in the West Ky Hoops Classic next. 11. Dawson Springs – Coach Chad Burgett 2017-18 record: 2-8 Week’s Record: 0-3 Last Weeks Rank: 10 Dawson Springs is heading in the wrong direction. They lost 3 more games bringing their losing streak to 5 games and 8 of their last 9. They lost to Caverna, Union Co, and Hopkins County Central in the Union County Holiday Tournament. They will take some rest and regroup before re-engaging competition in early January. 12. Fort Campbell – Coach Stacey Harrell 2017-18 record: 2-4 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Weeks Rank: 12 Falcons did not play this week, nor will they play again until January 5th against Hopkinsville. 13. Trigg County – Coach Payton Croft 2017-18 record: 5-5 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Weeks Rank: 13 Trigg County looked much better this week in the KME classic. After losing to St. Mary 46-42, the Wildcats defeated Houston County, TN and then blasted Clarksburg, TN. Trigg will play in the Stewart County Christmas Classic in TN next. 14. Crittenden County – Coach Denis Hodge 2017-18 record: 2-6 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Weeks Rank: 15 The Rockets got a nice win against Ballard Memorial 71-63. Crittenden got 21 points from Logan Belt and 17 from Gabe Mott. They will play a couple teams from Tennessee before school starts. 15. Lyon County – Coach Jeff Embrey 2017-18 record: 1-9 Week’s Record: 0-2 Last Weeks Rank: 14 Lyon lost big to McCracken County and then to Ballard Memorial at the very end 53-55. Gabe Board and Max Wadlington are the leading scorers for the Lyons. Player of the Week KyKy Tandy, University Heights, scored a whopping 50 points on 18 of 27 (66.7%) shooting including 7 three pointers against Paducah Tilghman.

BluegrassPreps.com 1st Region Boys Basketball Review Week 3 Big game this week between Paducah Tilghman and Graves County. Winner would be the number one in the region for this week rankings. The game was close, the atmosphere was awesome and it came down to the final minutes of the 4th quarter. Here are the rankings for week 3: 1. Paducah Tilghman – Coach Roderick Thomas 2017-18 record:4-2 Weeks record: 1-0 Last Week’s Rank: 1 Paducah Tilghman passed its first test in showing why it is the number 1 ranked team in this region. The Tornadoes defeated Graves County 61-50 behind Jerome Reed (17), Jordan Harmon (15), and Rodriguez Thomas (14). This was the big game of the week and it didn’t disappoint. Graves led at the half, but PT had an outstanding second half fueled by a fantastic home atmosphere. Tilghman will host Henderson County before also hosting their Christmas Tournament. 2. Mayfield – Coach Chris Guhy 2017-18 record: 4-1 Week’s Record: 3-1 Last Week’s Rank: 2 Mayfield is trying to make up for lost time this season with 4 games this past week. The Cardinals went 3-1 with the only loss coming to BGP#19 Christian County 81-74. Mayfield actually led much of this game, but allowed the Colonels to take control midway through the 4th quarter. The Guthries did their things with Connor leading the way with 19 and Carson had 17. The most surprising game was the 2 point win over McCracken County. Many thought Mayfield should have won this game handily. Connor and Carson both struggled in this game only scoring 17 points between them. They only made 7 of 23 shots from the field, however Desean Jones picked them up by scoring 17 himself and saving the Cardinals from losing. Mayfield will host Murray before heading to play in the Paducah Christmas Tournament. Three tough games upcoming for Mayfield including Valley, Hopkinsville, and Ballard. 3. Graves County – Coach Joshua Frick 2017-18 record: 6-2 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Week’s Rank: 3 Graves looked great in the first half of the region 1 battle with Paducah Tilghman. They couldn’t hold it together in the second half as turnovers hurt them in giving up the lead. Brenden Young was a force down low. He scored 16 and battled the boards all night. Ryan Mathis added 12. The Eagles just couldn’t seem to find a good rhythm in the second half. They will get the chance to redeem themselves later in the season. For now, they look to host Ohio County and Muhlenberg County in their own Holiday Classic. 4. McCracken County – Coach Burlin Brower 2017-18 record: 7-1 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Week’s Rank: 4 McCracken almost pulled the first big upset of the year in Region 1, losing to Mayfield by one basket. Tough loss for the Mustangs who put in a great effort. This game is an eye opener to the job that Coach Brower has done with a team that doesn’t seem to have the talent or experience to matchup with some of the top tier teams in the region. McCracken had a 46-44 lead with just minutes left, but lost on a jumpshot with 6 seconds left. The Mustangs didn’t dwell on their first loss of the season long as they downed Muhlenberg County and Liberty Tech from Tn. They will play Ballard and Lyon County before Holiday games. 5. Marshall County – Terry Birdsong 2017-18 record: 4-2 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Week’s Rank:5 Marshall County only had one game this week against Murray who they defeated 78-48, which was their highest offense output of the season. Tyler Powell led the Marshalls with 21 points, Skyler Smith contributed 12. Marshall County now travels south to Orlando, Florida where they will play in the Amusement Park Classic..lucky them. 6. Murray – Coach Dior Curtis 2017-18 record: 5-3 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Week’s Rank: 6 Murray lost a big game to Marshall County. They didn’t have any answers for Marshall’s defense. However the Tigers bounced back with wins against Evangelical Christian and Todd County Central. Hunter Utley led the Tigers in scoring for all 3 games, but his biggest was 28 against Marshall. Murray will play Mayfield before playing in Butler County’s BTN/WLBQ Christmas Classic. 7. Carlisle County – Coach Brian O’Neil 2017-18 record: 5-3 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Week’s Rank: 7 The Comets took a overwhelming loss to Mayfield, but not before they defeated Fulton City 66-40. They also rebounded nicely from that loss and beat Lyon County 57-54. Carlisle is finding itself improving, and although they are not on a level like Mayfield, Graves, or Tighlman, they will compete well in most of the games they play this year. They will continue their season at Graves County Eagle Holiday Classic. 8. Calloway County – Coach Brad Cleaver 2016-17 record: 5-2 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Week’s Rank: 7 The Lakers won two more games, their opponents this weke were Fulton County and Caldwell County. Both are game Calloway needed to win to prove they deserve to be ranked where they are. They squeaked by Caldwell 58-52, while soundly beating Fulton County 85-54. Jeremy Darnell continues to lead the Lakers. *Last week it was reported Calloway lost to Hickman, when they actually defeated Hickman 83-64. 9. Ballard Memorial – Coach Marla Cooper 2017-18 record: 5-2 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Week’s Rank: 9 Ballard had a very nice win over Hickman County 74-63. Bradley Chandler led the way with 23 points and they continued to get balanced scoring as 3 other players had more than 10 points. Ballard lost to region 1 contender Graves County 84-40. The separation between the top and the middle is quite large. Ballard has a tough game against McCracken before playing winnable games against Crittenden Co. and Lyon Co. 10. Hickman County – Coach Jimmy Long 2017-18 record: 2-7 Week’s Record: 0-2 Last Week’s Rank: 10 Hickman hasn’t won a game since December 5. They currently in a 5 game slump including two losses to Ballard Memorial and an bad effort against Livingston Central losing by almost 50 points. Hickman will hopefully get back in the win column as they will play in Trigg County’s KME Christmas Classic 11. Fulton County – Coach Jamie Madding 2017-18 record: 3-4 Week’s Record: 1-2 Last Week’s Rank: 11 The Pilots lost to Calloway County 85-54, Cairo IL 61-75, and then defeated Dongola IL 66-28. Next up for Fulton County is the Obion County Christmas Tournament in Tn. 12. Fulton City – Coach Jon Dillard 2017-18 record: 1-6 Week’s Record: 0-2 Last Week’s Rank: 12 The Bulldogs lost 2 games, one to Carlisle County and one to an out of state team. That puts the Bulldogs on a 6 game losing streak. Good news…2 games against Christian Fellowship are on the horizon. 13.
