  1. The reason there were only 10 girls on one team is that they were two "no-shows" and they were on that team. There is a certain amount of frustration in any event on the award selections. I don't choose the players but I remember one girl that was very deserving of her selection even though she is not a scorer. One game in particular she did not record a basket but had between 15-20 rebounds and intimidated on defense. There will always be a fair amount of selfish play at these events but I try to look at the overall game, skill, attitude, ability to be coached, etc. The most difficult thing in the world is what to do about a touted player that comes in and has a bad day. Some feel obligated to list them but I believe give it to the deserving players. That is why I am glad I don't make the decision. Years ago when I was involved at the Boys Fifth Third Classic at Lexington Catholic we did not put a UK signee on the team because to be honest he had a couple of bad games. Needless to say the fans wanted to hang us from the rafters. The thing that impressed me Saturday was the effort put forth by the ladies from 7th graders through seniors.
  2. Thanks Wireman, good job on updates and tourney, much appreciated.
  3. I noticed in the schedules that Hoop Dreams two teams were designated I believe Hoop Dreams-Black and Hoop Dreams-Orange. Which was Coach Q's team?
  4. Great job Jesse, I saw every girl mentioned here play in the past. I agree with all the comments about several other girls deserving recognition but I Don't know any of the top ten mentioned that I would remove from the original list. If it was a top 15 or top 20 I can think of several others and perhaps if there were a top 20 you could shuffle the lineup play all star games and have a different winner every night.
  5. My mistake I checked back, both stat crews had Davis with 31 rebounds, eight offensive and 23 defensive and bear in mind that these crews are working for different schools and recording independently.
  6. Some tournaments have went to the Tournament MVP from the winning team and another award the Most Outstanding Player Award which is normally the best player in the tournament period regardless of team.
  7. Two extremely good stat crews worked the games with experience ranging from the state tournament to college games. One crew had 31 rebounds and I believe the other had Davis with 30 rebounds. Statistics have been questioned on this site a lot lately but from my experience over the years with WL Stats and the Lexington Catholic Stats Crew and from personally attending this game I have no doubt Mr. Davis' numbers are correct.
  8. Dixie Heights' Brandon Hatton 33 of 36 free throws in the first two games of the tournament!!!
  9. West Jessamine was led by Daulton Peters with 46 points on 21 of 26 from the field including three of five from the three point line and one of one free throws. Peters also recorded 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and three steals. This game was an opening round game of the Lake Cumberland Holiday Hoops Classic held in Somerset at the three high schools in the county.
  10. Can a moderator fix my original post to show Dixie Heights winning the game?
  11. Sorry, brain freeze and too much basketball tonight congratulations to Dixie Height

  14. I have known Ron Dawn since his son Ronny was a freshman in the old days and have followed his teams throughout the year. I have always had a lot of respect for him as a coach and a person. I feels he fits the old adage " he can take his players and beat yours and then turn around and take your players and beat his". I don't think he would have returned to the bench if he did not think this team could be special. One thing for sure it will make for an interesting region this season.
  15. I believe Ballard is 8-10 points better now with a veteran squad who is on a mission. Billy Hick's team (Scott County) always is better after Christmas and they must adjust to the big man as well as Teddy Ware who transferred from Henry Clay. Ware is an excellent perimeter shooter and the big man could be a defensive force in the middle but I see all this coming together later in the year. I have to believe that Coach Renner's Bruins are on a mission this year and very focused. Love to see this match up in March.
  16. I need to see Drew McDonald play more but I have got to believe he is ranked a little low right now.
  17. Jordan Green is in a great position to put up big numbers at Henry Clay. Trey Grundy, Teddy Ware, and Christen Cunningham all transferred and the offense must go through him and Jeremiah Tisdale. When focused Green is hard to defend, he can take you off the dribble, has range on his shot, and is very athletic. Listed at 6-6 he is hard to guard both on tghe perimeter and in the paint.
  18. I am a big Shane Hall fan but I agree he may be ranked a little high to start the season. Shane basically lost so much time last year because of a nagging injury. He is very athletic, a team player and has a tremendous upside. His offensive game is still a work in progress, but if he stays healthy this season I expect to see the real Shane Hall and some of his high rankings will be vindicated. With all this being said I believe he made a very good college decision which will work out for all involved.
  19. Scott County could be a "sleeper" this year. Last year Coach Helton's team was a regular M.A.S.H. unit with a tremendous amount of serious injuries. Tereka Guyn is a big time rebounder and very athletic. Audriana Christopher should be back from her season ending injury and they could have the girls to execute Coach Helton's defense.
  20. Anderson County will be fine. They have a dynamic 1-2 scoring punch in Makenzie Cann and Eriel McKee. They will have to adjust to not having the big girl (Kali Whiteside) in the middle. They have a good supporting cast but will need to have someone step up as a dependable consistent scorer outside of Cann and McKee. Saturday they ran into a Bullitt East team clicking on all cylinders. Fr. Lindsey Duvall was as good as advertised, Taylor Blain was knocking down the perimeter threes, and Emily Fryman flawlessly ran the offense. Courtney Pfister stepped out to hit perimeter shots and Fr. Alyssa Peak is a quick guard that performed well. Bullitt East has a good mix of freshmen and veterans. This was, after all a pre-season scrimmage and Anderson County learned a lot and will be very good and Coach Chris Stallings had to be happy with Bullitt East's performance.
  21. Eastern is the real deal, definitely underrated at this time. They are quick and athletic with two big time scorers in Jade Spaulding and Madison Raque.
  22. Jesse James, thanks for linking to the page. These were after all, only scrimmages but there was some good basketball played. the girls seemed to have a little problem with the emphasis on hand checking. I will add more later this week about individual players. Anderson County will miss the big girl inside early but they have a lot of offense in Cann and McKee. Sacred Heart lacks size but are very talented. Bullitt East has a good mix of youth and experience. Lindsey Duvall is the real deal and Taylor Blain shot "lights out" from the wing today. Emily Fryman is a seasoned floor general and Courtney Pfister was solid today.
  23. 2013BEHPU Excellent question and also some of the heights listed are from last year and my preview on my website is a little closer to having the correct heights in the team capsules. Back to the question and adding input from some of the coaches. Spencer County – 5-8 Sr. Kaylan Nigh G/F very athletic and very quick. 5-10 Sr. Krysten Barlow versatile player who is expected to be a consistent scoring threat. 5-2 7th grade PG Alyssa Howie could start at the point. Presentation – 5-7 Sr. Aliyah Johnson three point shooter and an excellent ball handler. Meade County – 5-7 Jr. PG Addi Lynch has excellent range on her shot and can handle the ball. Anderson County – 5-5 Sr. PG Destiny Stewart 3-year starter and 5-9 Sr. Alex Avritt G/F 2-year starter. Bullitt East – A good mix of veterans and a large class of talented freshmen, several could step up. Breckinridge County – 5-10 Sr. Jenna Thornhill scores, rebounds, and is coming off a good summer. Owensboro Catholic – 5-9 Sr. Haley Garvin has recovered from injuries and is poised for a good senior campaign. 5-6 So. Mikayla Berry is expected to increase her scoring this season. Sacred Heart – 5-6 Sr. Vanessa Baisas is coming off an injury and has excellent court vision and can nail the outside shot. 5-4 Jr. Gretchen Samsel scores well in transition and shoots the ball well. 5-4 Jr. Ashley Johnson is quick and handles the ball. Allen County-Scottsville – Please note Morgan Rich is 5-11 and 5-9 So. Savannah Gregory and 6-1 Jr. Holly Robinson are also players to watch. Mercy Academy – Jaguars have graduated a lot of talent over the past four years but tradition never graduates and I am looking forward to seeing who steps up this season. The players originally listed were provided to me but I have always been surprised at the players who have either grown, greatly improved, or are new to the program. I hope to do a follow-up after the event and hopefully can provide more info.
