Are you saying that Trinity is doing the same thing today that it did 10 years ago? 15 years ago? My memory is that the Trinity teams from 10-15 years ago were made up of kids who knew they wanted to go to Trinity at a very early age, attended Catholic grade schools, and were very good high school players (see the Sweet 16 team featuring Brian Brohm). Those kids today don't have a chance, or very little chance, to play at the school. Because Ballard does it, Trinity must do it. It's just an arms race, and it's bad for everyone. We know that very few of the Ballard players live in the Ballard "resides" area, but that doesn't seem to be a plausible reason for Trinity to offer "aid" to kids who would never attend the school without the aid. And I also know, first hand, of the people who offer "aid" to the athletes. They may not be employed by Trinity, but it is impossible to believe that the Trinity administrators don't know of these people and what they are doing to get 6'5 kids from Conway and all-state freshmen from Shelby County to enroll at the school.

Which parish and Catholic grade school did the following (recent vintage) Trinity basketball players attend: Josh Sewell, James Quick, Darryl Hicks, Charles Foster, Miles Rice, Demarcus Page, Craig Owens, Tre Ivory, Raymond Spalding, Jax Levitch, and Kelshawn Knight-Goff?

In Louisville, PRP v. Butler and Ballard v. Eastern have packed houses and huge emotions throughout the game. Ballard v. Trinity is a great rivalry, but they are not scheduled for regular season games because of Trinity's remarkable penchant to get kids to enroll that have little or no connection to the school or the Catholic traditions of the school. God works in mysterious ways, but the Trinity basketball (and football) program does not. Hence, very few JCPS teams will play them in any sport in the regular season, unless forced to by being in their district.

Big (6'7 Seniors LaMontray Harris and D'Angelo Hunter). Fast (5'9 Senior and 5'10 Junior Khalid Raheem). Athletic (6'4 Junior Richard Gaines and the lightning fast McDaniels and Raheem). Deep (6'0 Sophomore Hunter Stevenson and 6'0 Junior Greg Davidson). Experienced (Harris, Hunter, and McDaniels). Hall of Fame Coach (Dale Mabrey) Losing 6'3 Senior John Oyler (who will play baseball only) hurts, but Gaines may be a huge beneficiary of that loss and Hunter Stevenson may develop into a premier shooter. Harris, Hunter, and McDaniels are all potential Kentucky All-Stars. PRP is in the same position that Bullitt East enjoyed last year. The big question is whether they can win the region despite being heavily favored to go back to Rupp.

I believe you have to flip Butler and PRP. Butler has tons of skill players returning, including the ultra-dynamic tailback Joe Brown, and the bruising fullback, William Johnson. PRP will be strong again, but lost too much to be ranked ahead of Butler. Manual, Male, and Ballard have top 10 talent and may be really good by year end.

The 87 all-state members came from -- 11th Region (15 players); 6th and 10th Regions (8 players each); 7th and 3rd Regions (6 players each); 5th, 9th, 12th, and 16th Regions (5 players each); 1st, 4th and 15th Regions (4 players each); and 2nd, 8th, 13th, and 15th Regions (3 players each).

PRP's Greg Laughlin went 11-1, beat Butler in the regional finals, St. Xavier in the state semi-finals and posted the 4th lowest ERA in the history of the KHSAA and was not on the first, second, third, or honorable mention teams. That is unusual, and Woodford County had two pitchers on the first team (which would have made sense last year, but not this year). And then Steven Husband at PRP was named to the honorable mention team, even though he was a periodic pinch runner with less than 10 at bats. Somebody got some jersey numbers and names mixed up.

Ballard and PRP in same pool!

I would be shocked if Manual's current coach, Josh Wolff, is not the new coach at Butler. He is a Butler graduate and a very good player who managed to knock PRP out of the regional tournament on a couple of occasions. He will have a very good base of talent at Butler, while the talent tends to fluctuate wildly at Manual. Plus, the prospects for a regional title are better with Butler in the 6th (PRP, Bullitt East, DeSales) than with Manual in the 7th (St. Xavier, Male, Trinity, Eastern, Ballard). No idea on DeSales.

Apollo v. Mercer Co. is a toss up, but the winner will be favored to advance to the Final Four. Henderson Co. is exceptionally dangerous, and they can save their ace for the Tates Creek/Collins winner. Tates Creek is probably the favorite against Collins, but not by much. PRP should advance to play the winner of St. Xavier/Logan Co. St. Xavier looks as good as anyone coming into the tournament. Can Logan Co. pull a big upset? Because St. Xavier hits the ball so well, Logan Co. will need to score at least 5 runs against a very good pitcher in Melchior, which is very difficult to do. St. Xavier pounded PRP 12-0 earlier this year. Central Hardin appears to be a slight favorite in a very tough bottom of the bracket. Lone Oak and Ryle have won 30+ games, and Harrison Co. is coached by a man who has won four state titles and nearly 1000 games. Going to be tough for Lone Oak to beat Drew Harrington, but Lone Oak can hit the baseball. My final four is Apollo, Henderson Co., St. Xavier, and Central Hardin.

Very shocked at this move. No one loses more players than BE lost from the past season, and the PRP loss in the regional semi-finals will haunt him for a while. Nevertheless, they have some guys who can play and who could make a run at a regional title. Really surprised that Barr decided to move on. There will be new coaches at perennial powers Butler and Bullitt East, and it is hard to win a regional title in year one for new coaches.

With the 8-2 victory over Christian Academy Louisville last night, Coach Miller tied Larry Gumm of Green County HS for the top spot all time on Kentucky's high school coaching wins list. Miller is one of 15 coaches in the country to reach the 1000 win plateau, and he will be joined in that club next year by Mac Whitaker at Harrison County HS.

Too many to name. Three Mr. Baseballs -- Scott Downs (1995), Brad Corley (2002), and Zack Cox (2008). Downs was a first-team all SEC pitcher at UK and has been in the big leagues for over 10 years. Corley was a first-team all SEC player at Mississippi State and was the 2nd round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2005 draft (behind Andrew McCutchen). Corley made it to AA ball before yielding to shoulder problems. Cox was a first-team all SEC player at Arkansas and was a first round selection of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2010 draft. He is currently playing AAA ball for the Miami Marlins and should be in the bigs soon.

In 34 years, his teams have won the 6th Region 19 times. 14 of those 19 regional winners have made it to the Final Four in the state tournament. Eight of the 14 Final Four teams advanced to play in the championship game, and four of those eight teams have won the state championship. Since Coach Miller started coaching in 1980, only one other team from Louisville has won the Kentucky state championship -- St. Xavier way back in 1981. No titles for perennial Louisville powers Trinity, Male, Ballard, Eastern, Butler, or Manual from 1980-2012.

1980. 34th year at PRP, where he was also a player. Only 14 coaches in the country have ever won 1000 high school baseball game (Coach Miller is the 14th with his win against Lone Oak last night), and PRP played Jefferson HS from West Virginia earlier this year -- whose coach has won 1250 games in 41 years of coaching.

This is still very much a rumor, according to people who would know.

Win number 1000 for Coach Miller could come tonight (weather permitting) against a very strong Lone Oak team, or tomorrow against Anderson County, or tomorrow against Male. All of Coach Miller's win have come at PRP High School.

There is one coach in Kentucky HS baseball history to reach the 1000 wins plateau -- Larry Gumm of Green County HS with 1006. As of May 2, 2013, PRP's Bill Miller has 997 wins and Harrison County's Mac Whitaker has 978 wins. The retired Madison Central coach, Don Richardson, has 952 wins. Next in line are Coach Krumpelbeck at CCH (858 wins) and Bob Mantooth at Apollo (854 wins). Coaches Krumpelbeck and Mantooth are finishing their 37th seasons as head coaches this year. CCH has games 9 remaining games on the regular season, so I will assume that he will win 10 more games this year. That would give him 868 wins at year end. CCH has won 33, 28, 25, 33, 27 games in the last five years, an average of 29 wins per season. At that pace, he would need a little more than four years to reach 1000. Will it happen? Apollo has 11 games remaining on the regular season, so I will assume that he will win 10 more games this year. That would give him 864 wins at year end. Apollo has won 29, 26, 26, 26, and 33 games in the past five years, an average of 28 wins per season. At that pace, he also would need five full seasons to get the 1000 mark. Anyone think he will do it?

Best winning percentage. Unbeaten in the 16th Region. 36 runs allowed in 16 games. I am sure that Greenup, Blazer, and Boyd Co. have played a stronger schedule, and each has a great shot at the title. 16th Region is wide open, and is the only region that does not have a team ranked in the top 25 of the latest KHSBCA coaches poll. Who do you believe will emerge from the 16th?
