  1. TOG, your argument is off base. While I despise cheerleading, the man's points are valid regarding any true travel squad. Look at the volleyball nuts. They travel to Indy, Columbus, Chicago, on the regular for tournaments. The money parents pay to the cult of the volleyball doesn't end with team fees. It includes hotels, meals, admission. I guarantee you the are spending great cash for the cause of the cult. While some will get schollies, I see others sign w Thomas More. The parents, like him, choose to spend their money in this way.
  2. I don't think St X has any worries about who they play but Elder has been sub-par recently by Elder standards. They have more worries about win numbers.
  3. I don't think his corned beef is that special.
  4. Several issues, playing football is tough work. Some kids are not enamored with the physical toll it takes on you. Most of the kids would get put on the line, not glamour positions. Basketball is much more fun than football in those circumstances to kids. That said, it couldn't hurt for some parents to recognize and advise their kid that there is not a big call for 6'5 centers who can't jump at the DI hoops level. Think of Giesler or Thelen, they had football bodies. Wasted playing hoops, no, but could have taken their game to a higher level in football.
  5. St Paul has to be on the list for their other seafood items. MQH is quality fish, light breading, you can taste the fish. No question one of the better ones around.
  6. Dale is the program which makes him stronger than a parent group.
  7. Boone County is not Boone County anymore. The closer it gets to being an "inner city" school the less relevant it becomes in football. If you told me he was going to Ryle, Cooper or Conner, I might agree with you.
  8. I thought JR left for Cincinnati Diocese pension and vesting? Does Wirth have a similar background?
  9. I am all for being competitive. Winning is absolutely a goal. As I said, if you have plenty of 8th graders to fill out a competitive squad, 6th grade Johnny shouldn't enter the equation. It is supposed to be an 8th grade team, not an all school team. I understand if some schools have to pull players up because of numbers. But to displace a kid in one grade because we're going to stunt Johnny's athletic growth is ridiculous.
  10. It is still a school sponsored activity, not designed for one person but for the many. Jr high play is not segmented by varsity or jv, it's segmented by grade. Let them play AAU if they are not getting the competition they need. AAU has certainly become more important for any college prospects anyway. It's not a junior high's responsibility to give Johnny more competition. Again, there for the many, not the few.
  11. Unless it's a number issue, no one should play up, junior high or to high school.
  12. Anyone ever have the fried chicken at Nick's Grove on Taylor Mill Rd? It was a guilty pleasure when I lived in that neck of the woods.
  13. ok. sometimes sizes are overstated, so appears both are legit.
  14. That is a great photo of the two players. I know Kief is reportedly 6'5, it looks like he has a few inches on Barker. Concern for his size?
  15. I believe Conner beat Pius in 7th grade final. #5 for Conner is a smooth player.
  16. Hey,as parents live through their kids, blame the refs, blame the coaches, etc., if they are not careful, they'll miss the enjoyment of just watching their kid play. It'll be over before they know it.
  17. My point was some coaches act as poorly as some parents. Ryle was not pressing as a result of something egregious their opponent did. Poor sportsmanship on coaches part.
  18. No doubt middle school is worst. Had Conner parent cuckooing while opponent shot free throws, middle school game! Saw parents get upset with Ryle coach at freshman girls game. Ryle coach was pressing up 25 w 1 minute left. The other team did not provoke this. Girls games it is more pronounced, less in the stands, everything is magnified and heard. Worst are the parents of the better teams when things don't go their way. Ryle parents complaining about ref's calls when they are up 25. Just enjoy Johnny or Suzie's big game. I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU PARENTS, if your kid is playing freshman ball as a freshman, they are typically not destined for greatness, especially on the girls side. So, enjoy it while it lasts. I know I'm dreading not being able to see my kid play anymore.
  19. CCH did well going inside early to Tobler. Went away from it, Ruthsatz took good shots but shot poorly, other times tried to initiate contact and refs did not blow whistle either way. Cooper moved ball well, shot well. Deserved win.
  20. Newport Pizza is greater than Deweys. Closer to NY style than any I've tasted. Deweys is fine, better than a celebrated local chain, but give me Newport or Noce's in Edgewood.
  21. If coaches are pressing up 20 with a minute left in the game, you can be damn sure they'll do anything to win. If it means dropping a player down to win a meaningless tournament, they'll do it.
  22. For the very reason that players play up, why even have a tournament? The only level playing field is the varsity level. JV and freshman teams are there to develop kids, have them learn the system, so that they may be ready to eventually make varsity and contribute. I'm in the camp of not letting them play down if their game has evolved beyond the "freshman"level" I'm probably in the minority but I don't believe in letting jr high players play unless you can't field a team.
