Greg Baughn was a starting guard on Apollo's 1985 state tourney team...and coached the Eagles to the Sweet 16 in 2004.

Marty Cline played on University Heights's state championship team in 1992...and coached UHA to the Sweet 16 in 2004 and 2005.

Yes...Gene Rhodes, all-tourney team for Male in 1945; coached St. Xavier to the championship in 1958.

Bob Mulcahy played for Lafayette's 1950 state championship team...and coached Seneca to the state championship in 1964.

Bo Davenport, played for Bowling Green in the Sweet 16 in 1945 (and another year or two, as memory serves) and coached Edmonson County to the state championship in 1976.

Lee James played at Dawson Springs. Head coach of Hopkinsville gals in 1999. According to stepscalled, he was an assistant last year at Hopkins County Central.

I believe it was the 1974 Greenup County team...school's first year of consolidation...that was so good. Mark Quillen 6'4 Senior center, Steve Skaggs Junior guard. They beat Fleming County, then upset Madisonville. Quillen got three fouls early, and I remember telling my boss (as we alternated games doing play-by-play,) "Well, shoot; I was hoping we would beat them full strength." Final score: Greenup 90, Madisonville 81. Lesson learned. Neither team was going to beat (eventual champion) Louisville Central in the semi-final. I think the 92-37 score is still the widest margin in state tourney in history. I remember Eddie Ford telling us that Greenup's struggles vs. Hopkinsville in '85 were exacerbated by having lost a starting guard (or two?) in the region tournament. Fun to see dozens of coaches...not to mention the stars themselves...at Elizabethtown. It was the fifth year for the event...sponsored by the KABC. Got to meet the twin Mr. Basketballs from 1958: Ralph Richardson of Russell County (who has been there every year) and Harry Todd of Earlington. Gene Rhodes of Male fame and who coached a state champion at St. Xavier in 1958. Met the two sons of the late Donnis Butcher. I had seen him play in an NBA exhibition game in Indiana in the early 1960's...and got his autograph afterward when he and three teammates were waiting for a taxi to take them back to the hotel. I had broadcast a few games of Male's Bobby Turner and Ballard's Jeff Lamp. Lamp had other commitments, but Bobby was there (as was his high school coach Wade Houston.) Covington Grant (and U.C.) star Tom Thacker was there...along with Lexington Dunbar's George Wilson. When I came to Kentucky (1974,) our station had been originating the broadcast of the entire state tournament for 25 years and continued that tradition for another 20. Doing so "required" that we keep a ton of state-wide information so we could appeal to as many listeners around the Commonwealth as possible. Of course, one of those items was a list of those named Mr. Basketball...and it started with King Kelly in 1956. It is only in recent years that I started seeing anything referring to 1954 and '55. When those names (Kuhn and Hatton) were added to the rest...and why they were not included from the beginning...is a bit of a mystery. The Indiana Mr. Basketball...at least according to sources now...started in 1939. It would be interesting to go through archives of newspapers in the '60's and '70's to see if those names have all been on that list the whole time.

McCracken County vs. Scott County. Scott with no losses; McCracken with one. The Lady Mustangs beat Madisonville in the consolation bracket final 10-7 in 10 innings.

Scott County beats Madisonville 6-2 in the winners bracket, and McCracken County eliminates Daviess County in the consolation bracket. #1 McCracken County vs. #2 Madisonville in the "semi-final." Loser is done; winner plays Scott County for the championship. McCracken and Madisonville have played twice this year...with the Lady Maroons winning both.

Just now remembered to go through one of my boxes of sports "stuff"...and found that I have two programs from 1972, and one each from 1979, 1980, 1996, 2006 and 2007.

I would suggest that some of the best coaches ever have spent their careers at small schools and never gotten the recognition "big time" coaches get.

Actually this site has books back through the 2013 season. So, apparently, the last time they sold programs AT the state tournament was 2012.

That's a pretty strong statement, WKY. Not sure about "over achievement," but going by results alone, he's pretty durn good. In six years, he's had four district champions and a runner-up...and four region champions and a runner-up...coming out of the toughest district in a rather wide area. At state, he has been to two quarter-finals and a semi-final...twice losing to the eventual champion. And his six-year overall record at Hoptown is 159-37. I can be rather picky at times, but I would surely settle for that.

On a related note, the Indianapolis Star is still the main sponsor for the Hoosiers. Got to believe all the publicity that generates each year is a big plus for their side...and at least a partial reason that 6,500 folks saw the game in Indianapolis last year while only 800 attended the game in Kentucky.

Well I'll be darned. If I were a bettor, I could have lost a lot of money on that one. Thanks for the info Jason...and for confirming it with Bob White. Can't argue with that.

More reasons than that. I think the biggest one is when the Louisville Courier-Journal dropped sponsorship of the event. (I think the Indianapolis Star is still a main sponsor for the other side.) For the Kentucky Lions Club to try to run this big a deal is impossible. As good a people as those guys are and as much good as they do, public relations to this degree is not their strong suit. You can't beat the publicity that the major newspaper in a state provides. True, newspapers are not as "important" as they once were, but this situation still gives Indiana a tremendous advantage.

I would think long time Pulaski County fans would be thrilled to have another Fraley on the bench. Dave was coach of the 32-3 state champs in 1986. As mentioned earlier, his son Shannon hit the game-winning shot in the 47-45 upset of Pleasure Ridge Park in the championship game. Now another of Dave's sons will be head coach of the Maroons. I have the audio of that championship game and would like to post the last minute or so of the broadcast but haven't figured out how to do it yet. My son is a techie; I'll see if he help.
