AAU in Northern Kentucky
From the KHSAA Handbook, "ByLaw 8 Any student who, after enrolling in grade nine has been a contestant in football or basketball at any grade level (9-12) and has eligibility remaining in that sport shall not participate on any non-school sponsored team or in any all-star game in that sport or any variation of that sport from the first day of school through tthe last scheduled contest played in that sport (including KHSAA sanctioned post season) by that school unless it has been sanctioned by the Board of Control. "..... Case BL-8-6 " ByLaw 8 does not restrict student athletes until he/she has been enrolled in grade nine and played for a team in a contest at any level (grades 9-12) within the school." Reading this, I'd think that eigth graders would be allowed to participate in whatever they wanted outside of school. That is assuming the coach either approves or doesn't know.

Interesting Basketball Rule
I can't believe there's another one. Here we go.. Rule 2-10 "Art 1... Officials may correct an error if a rule is inadvertantly set aside and results in: a) failure to award a merited free throw".... ..."Art 2 In order to correct any of the officials errors listed in Art 1, such error must be recognizzed by an official no later than during the first dead ball after the clock has been properly started" Case book 2.10.6.B A1 is fouled by B1. It is a non-shooting personal foul. It is Team B's 7th foul of the half, but the official scorer fails to notify the officials and they award Team A the ball of bounds. After the inbpound pass, Team A misses a shot and and Team B secures the rebound. While Team B has the ball in its possession, B1 is charged with an illegal screen against A2. Before Team A os handed the ball for the throw-in, the officials are informed that Team A should have been awarded the automatic bonus on its previous possession. RULING: The error can still be corrected. A1 shoots the bonis free throw situation with no players on the lane. Team A is then awarded a throw-in for B1's team control fou\l.".....:deadhorse: If this doesn't cure it, nothing will

I'm not sure that Goetz entertaining offers is related to the talent coming up. With all schools that add another sport, there will be impact across all aspects of the athletic program. HC is defiantely down this year, but look for them to rebound in the next couple.

Freshman refs where do they get these guys?
This may be one of the more ridiculous thread I've ever read. First, we all know that you will not get Varsity caliber officials at most Freshman games. These games are used typically for training inexperienced officials to help them reach the next level. Second, IF the two officials working the game in question were indeed recent SK alumni AND are KHSAA certified, they are in violation of the code as outilined in the KHSAA Officials Guidebook, (p6) Conclict of Interest, I, e&f. If the school knowingly scheduled the officials in violation, they could be responsible as well. If the officials were not KHSAA certified, the school is at fault.

Interesting Basketball Rule
It actually reads before the ball goes dead and becomes live again. The ball is dead when it goes thru and live when at the disposal of the thrower. Whistle must sound before the thrower has the ball. And as much as I hate it, YES -- if there is a foul such as a rebounding foul as the ball goes thru you may end up with another set of free throws. As much as I like the continued element, the following seems obvious: 1) Good officials will avoid this situation at all costs. 2) The same good officials will correct the error according to the rules when it happens. 3)Not everyone claiming to be a good official is reliable enough to enforce the unpopular rules. 4)We can what if this to no end.:deadhorse:

Top ten misunderstood rules
I'll have to research this one, but I beleive it cannot be goaltending. It could be basket interference, if the player contacts the ring or net while the ball is on the ring or inthe cylinder. I beleive the correct interpretation would be, 1) if in the course of play, no call-- 2) if a deliberate and UNSPORTING ACT, a Technical Foul. I'll do more research this evening.

Interesting Basketball Rule
Why are you concerned with the coaches' opinions. It looks to me like you're only worried about what the coach will say about / rate you as at the end of the season. What will that coach say when he goes back and reads the rule (ok, when he asks another official because coaches don't often read the rules)??? Will he respect your decision to bail when the times are tough or will he wonder what other rules you choose not to enforce? The measure of a true official is their reaction when the things go wrong. If you can't handle explaining the correct call, you're game management isn't that of an official with an "extensive career".

All "A" Classic leaving Richmond?
There are seveal venues across the stat htat would gladly host the All A. I can't beleive that Richmond would actually consider letting this (and other) events go, instead of a moderate ticket price increase. This is what Cincinnati did with the old (pre -Duke Energy) convention center and it bit them royally.

Top ten misunderstood rules
I beleive this is attributed to a ball that is knocked around a bit or a ball that hits the floor. I had a coach long ago tell me that I didn't get any credit for tipping a ball out to my teammates -- I had to get it myself.

Interesting Basketball Rule
I think you've just hit the nail on the head. Coaches are always wanting consistancy from game to game then find officials who won't apply the rules as they are specifically written, cause all officials (not just in basketball) to lose credibility when they need it most.

Top ten misunderstood rules
The rule never changed -- was simply misunderstood. There is no posession on and inbound pass, therefore the ball cannot be established in the front court until it is posessed. Add this -- because there is no poesession, there is no team control and a foul, such as a illegal pick (previously established as a block) on the offense WILL result in the opponant shooting the bonus.
-
Top ten misunderstood rules
Half way through -- haven't seen any other answers. The exception is on an inbound pass OR rebound where posession has not been established yet.
-
Top ten misunderstood rules
Unless I'm wrong the "moving screen" is simply a block. The fact that you're blocking the defender away from a teammate doesn't change the rule.
-
Top ten misunderstood rules
You can add the tipped ball scenario to this one -- most don't know that it doesn't matter that the ball is tipped- only who it touches last. They also don't realize that there is no "TEAM CONTROL" on a shot or inbound pass, regardless of a tip.

A spinoff from Clyde's earlier post, what do you think are the top misunderstood rules in basketball ??? Let's ask the experts and expand our knowledge base a little.

Interesting Basketball Rule
I don't beleive that in the definition of a "good official" it says anywhere that they change the rules to make the situation "more fair". This is not a situation where the rules allow any leniency. No matter how you sort it out, there is only one RIGHT WAY to correct this error. I agree that it is an unfair solution and that it will more than likely ruin any good relationship between a coach and official, but it is the RIGHT WAY. Also, who it applies to doesn't matter. An uneducated home coach would be just as livid as a visitor. The rules don't dictate "fairness" or different treatment for the Home nor Away team. Please examine your copy of the Rules Book and Case Book. Get back to me with the example where they say to fix it some other way. Thanks

ATM, you are absolutely correct. This is why it is IMPERATIVE on ALL LEVELS that the schools provide a competant person to keep the book. I will agree that in 99% of the varsity games, the book keeper will not miss this one and if they do it is already on the scoreboard. Additionally, in most games an experienced official will know when they are getting close to the bonus. But mistakes happen. This type of problem is especially prevalent in the Frosh and JV level when you have students and volunteers at the table. It is also a good way to get a less experienced official into a very sticky situation that he or she cannot get easily out of. Any coach / fan / parent etc. who is reading this and is concerned about the quality of table personell that our school(s) enlist, should step up and volunteer to help out. The KHSAA provides a clinic each year for official scorers and timers. Go to http://www.nfhs.org/Workarea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=2867 to view the duties of the scorer and timer.:thumb:

Interesting Basketball Rule
ATM, your should continue -- once a basket is scored, the ball is dead. It becomes live again when at the disposal of the thrower. This is the "Window Closing" that you referred to. And I agree with everyone else, I would not want the job of explaining this one.

AAU in Northern Kentucky
I think you'll find that, especially on Sunday's, the core of SOAS officials are some of the best you'll get. I've been on Sat and Sun as both a coach and parent and have had little if any problems. If anything, I think they are too liberal with most of the rules. They take more than most other places, seemingly in an effort to appease coaches. If you attend just about any high school (or higher) game, you'll notice that there is a certain amount of decorum used by players and staff. This seems missing in many of their teams.

NKY Middle School Basketball League
MM, I couldn't agree more. The measure of a true sportsman is what happens when it doesn't go their way. If the game was a blowout, I'd think nothing would be noticed.

While still competitive, the program is definitely in disarray. Probably not the best choices made by the hiring comittee in the last couple opportunities.
