You said in a previous post that he cussed the player our. I don't call the use of 1 "cuss" word as cussing them out. To me, cussing them out would have been a profanity laced tirade where multiple cuss words were directed toward the player. Again, I am not saying that Leach was right in what he said. He SHOULD show more self-control. But to act like it's the end of the world because a coach used a word that probably every kid on that team uses multiple times a day seems like a little bit of overreacting to me. Again, not supporting what he did but those aren't 3rd graders he was coaching. I'm sure none of them went home asking what that word means.

Maybe not directly. The administration is afraid to stand up to the parents down there for fear of lawsuits. They would rather "ask" the teacher to apologize and say that the whole incident was the coach's/teacher's fault and welcome the player/student back with open arms to "save face" rather than standing behind them. It takes a lot for a coach to ask a player to leave practice. They'll make them run or stand on the sideline while someone else plays "their" spot before they toss them completely out. If it gets to that point the player just needs to leave, not tell the coach "no".

I wouldn't. For those who quit, they made their choice. They didn't quit on the coach, they quit on their teammates. If they did it once they'll do it again. Cut your losses and move on.

Or, perhaps he was told that he had to do some restitution for his "mishandling of the situation" and he just didn't want to agree to the terms. Greenup administration has a history of siding with kids and parents and not supporting their coaches or teachers. I have first hand experience of an incident where a student said someone said something to them that was offensive to them. This was never said and I know because I was with this person the entire time when it was supposedly said. They were given the ultimatim of giving a public apology for what they supposedly said or "suffer the consequences". Fearing that they might lose their job they apologized and compromised their pride and principles. Looking back the person in question wishes they would have made a stand for the truth rather than giving in. Maybe Leach wasn't willing to apologize if he felt he was not in the wrong?

Let's not try to make the players sound like victims just because they don't like the coach or his style of play. How about, hey parents just let the coaches do their job. That's all they want.

Not that I think that it was handled properly but if a coach tells a player to leave practice and the player tells them, "no" and they respond to "get the blank out", I hardly consider that cussing the player out. Again, I'm not condoning what was done but surely we are not up in arms because of that?? I personally know of students saying worse than that to teachers at Greenup who got nothing more than a "write up" if that.

I'm sure the kids on the bench heard how many points he had and probably wanted to get him back in to get 40 points. That's the way kids are and it's to be expected. Shame on the coach for putting him back in just to (by all appearances) get 40 points in a 30+ point blowout. If they now have an 11 man bench, NO STARTER should have played more than a couple mins into the 4th quarter. Their conditioning will be fine and they didn't need to play that much anyway with another game tomorrow. I don't think anyone would complain about the 30+ point blowouts if their starters were not in the games late on a regular basis. Most coaches on the losing end of those 30+ point blowouts aren't going to start pressing the reserves once the dogs are called off. Who cares if you win by 15 or 30+?? Personally, I would rather win by 15 and get my reserves some big game experience rather than having to put them in a pressure situation later on when it really counts and them be overwhelmed.

2 male Elliott parents/fans were extremely rude Monday night against Russell as well. It is my understanding that they were yelling directly at Coach Kidwell by name and even accused Russell of having the 2 officials in their "hip pocket". Very classless in my opinion. Weren't there parents from Elliott that wanted to leave the stands last year at boys games as well? It is my understanding that the comment was made at the Rowan game that people shouldn't mess with certain individuals because, "we are Sandy Hook". Boasting about that type of classless behavior from adults is really something to be proud of. I'm sure the majority of Sandy Hook is embarrassed by those "adults".

Sources state that Chad Leach has resigned as coach at GCHS. They also state that Jason Smith was named interim head coach. Have at it!!

St Joe is a good team. They are currently 10 - 1 with their lone loss being 2 points to Parkersburg, WV Catholic. According to Max Preps they are currently rated #18 in the state of WV regardless of class. This loss is not that shocking especially if Raceland is without Vanderhoof. I'm sure this would have been a much better game had she played. St Joe has a few more area schools on their schedule. It would not be a huge shock if they win all of them.

Stressful or emotional situations often bring out the best and worst in people. Kids usually model what they see at home.

It may not. I was just making an observation about Greenup as a whole based on past issues. The parents almost always are at the center.

I see your point and definitely agree that Tackett is doing an outstanding job and will deserve any honor he gets this year.

Let me add to my previous post that I am not necessarily saying that the coaches are always right in the ways that they handle things either but my point is you cannot have problems in different sports with different coaches and there not be a bigger underlying problem.

We read about problems with Greenup's football team this fall with players being kicked off the team and parents being in an uproar over the coach's discipline technique. Now we hear of players quitting the basketball team within the last 2 weeks and 1 being dismissed for disrespect. Why would anyone want to be a part of any of their sports programs??? The more I see and hear, it becomes more obvious to me that the problems down there goes much deeper than who the coach is. IMO, the parents and kids are out of control and you have the "inmates trying to run the asylum." The parents need to set a better example and the kids need to learn some respect. There's a common thread that runs through the continued poblems at GC and since the coaches are not the same for every sport we hear about problems with, it becomes difficult to always think that they are the problem there. Hmmmmm??

Why? He inherited the best team in the region. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it but it makes for an easy transition when you take over the top team. (See Tubby Smith, 1998) IMO, if you were going to give a mid-season COY you would really have to consider Merle Kidwell of Russell. Look what he is doing with a team that the coaches picked as the #7 or #8 team in the preseason. It took them about a month to crack the Super 7 in the Daily Independent because nobody expected them to be very good. He took heat for 2 years about not being able to win it all with Fortman and Okoro. They were beaten by a team with 2 "pretty good" players who earned D1 scholarships. Now Fortman & Okoro are gone and they are still winning with talent that the other area coaches felt was middle of the pack at best based on their preseason picks. They may not always win "pretty" but they just win. I think the man might be able to coach a little. Who knows what will happen by the end of the year but since you mentioned "as of right now" I thought I would give my opinion. I'm sure there are others you can argue for but I'm sure that whoever wins the region will probably get it. We will know the answer in a little over 2 months.

Congratulations to DeSarae!! Is this her 10th year of varsity ball or does it just seem that way? LOL I'm sure there are more than a few coaches in the 10th who are looking forward to not having to prepare for her after this year. Good luck at the next level.

Not so sure that the new coach will lead them to the "promised land". He had teams at Greenup that were better than he has this year and didn't get out of the district with them. I'm going to say that Bath's "emergence" has much more to do with the other teams in the region, excluding Elliott, lowering their level of play instead of Bath coming up to the upper end. I'm not saying that Bath is not improved, they are. What I am saying is the overall level of play in the 16th region is at an all time low. Elliott is very good but there are usually 3 or 4 other teams that would challenge them. That is obviously not the case this year.

Very true!! Ashland is a good team without her but can be really good with her in the lineup.

And, if Elliott were not in the 16th there are about 7 or 8 teams that are just about equal and it would be anybody's region to win. As it turns out those 8 teams will battle to see who will get the priviledge of getting beat by 20+ points in the region final.

I don't think that people are downplaying Rowan. Everyone in the 16th region knows they are the team to beat and have played the toughest schedule. I feel they are getting a lot of credit on here. I also feel that any difference between them and the other top teams in the region is not that much and they are very beatable. That's not being disrespectful or not giving them credit. It's simply the current state of affairs in 16th region girls basketball. There is NO dominant team like there is in the 16th region boys. As for the Ashland argument about Ward not playing and the potential effect it had in the Mason game. You cannot play without your leading scorer and rebounder, lose by her point average, & not feel that having her in the game would have made a difference. It changes more than just the point total. Also, you cannot knock Ashland for feeling they are just as good as Rowan. They are one of the favorites to win the region this year as well. I know coach Bradley knows that little separates the top teams in the 16th this year. With that in mind, I'm sure he likes his chances if and when these 2 teams should meet. Why, because there is no clearcut favorite and on any given night his Kittens are as good or better than anyone. On the other hand, like all the other coaches he knows that there are a handful of teams out there who can beat him on any given night.
