March 2, 201214 yr Saw some tweets today about the NFL finding that the Saints had a bounty program and the staff did nothing to stop it. Probably going to cost them in some form or fashion.
March 2, 201214 yr New Orleans Saints defense had 'bounty' program, NFL says - ESPN "The investigation showed that the total amount of funds in the pool may have reached $50,000 or more at its height during the 2009 playoffs. The program paid players $1,500 for a "knockout" and $1,000 for a "cart-off," with payouts doubling or tripling during the playoffs." I'd say some huge fines and penalties will be coming their way. Three seasons worth of bounties.
March 3, 201214 yr This is something that has been around forever. I'd be willing to bet a large percentage of teams do something similar--the Saints were just dumb enough to keep records of it.

March 3, 201214 yr You think every team provides cash rewards for "cart offs" and "knock outs"? Every team? No, but no one said every team did. I would agree with AJG, a very large percentage of teams have these things in place.
March 3, 201214 yr You think every team provides cash rewards for "cart offs" and "knock outs"? Maybe not the teams themselves. And I never said every team anyway. However, I'm willing to bet that a lot of the players do this on their own. The Saints case is getting a lot of exposure because a Coach was involved. Buddy Ryan got in some trouble for this back in 1989 for the same thing. It has been going on forever. Go read Shawne Merriman and Damien Woody's tweets. Merriman maintains that there was a bounty on him when he tore his knee up. Woody freely admitted that it goes on all over the league and wanted to know "who snitched".

Regardless, I don't think...or maybe I just hope that every team didn't encourage injuring other players. I can see wanting a big hit, but injuring someone so bad they need to be carted off? And you quoted two players. There are over 50 players on every team...and that's not counting the ones who were injured. Based on what I've read from players in the past, injuring someone on purpose isn't cool. They know this is their way of earning for their family...

March 4, 201214 yr Working on my phone. Let's see if I linked this correctly  Article on Sean Paytons Hubris
March 4, 201214 yr Working on my phone. Let's see if I linked this correctly  Article on Sean Paytons Hubris Worked fine for me. Even that article made it sound commonplace. The Saints are going to be in trouble for actively participating in it and keeping records of it. The article made it sound like the league may really drop the hammer.

Yes, players have thrown money in pools in probably every locker room in the league, a kangaroo court that pays out for big plays, fumbles forced, and big hits. Big plays, fumbles forced and big hits are different than "knock outs" and "cart offs".
