Ashland vs Fairview Jan. 6th Predictions

Featured Replies

I don't think any poster has implied that a conspiracy exists. However, like the rest of us imperfect human beings, referees have some that they like better than others. In, at least, a subconscious manner it probably does effect calls every now and then.

For example, Player X has a reputation for playing a little too aggressively (Is "dirty" a better word?). Certainly the referees are well aware of this fact. Thus, it is, I believe, reasonable to assume that referees watch Player X more closely than they do others in the game. Consequently, on a charge-block call, maybe, just maybe, the call goes rather automatically against Player X. This is merely the imperfect human factor coming into the equation but it still may determine the outcome of the game.

My point is that none of us are completely unbiased. We may make every effort to be so but, in truth, we are not. Referees are no different. There is no conspiracy. However, there is the natural human element. It is just a part of the game of basketball as it is a part of the game of life.

Posters of all loyalties can "cuss and discuss" all they want. All of us have an opinion. As for the assignment of referees, like anything else, I'm sure there is a little subjectivity in the process. Obviously, some referees are seen to be "more seasoned" than are others. It only makes sense that those referees get the more "demanding" assignments. Also, a now retired referee told me that a school can request that certain referees not be assigned to that school's home games. True or not, I don't know. However, it makes sense. My point is that assignments are probably not merely at random.

I think Rickyp's point was that ???? seems to referee a pretty high percentage of Ashland home games. Now that could be because ????? is seen as a top official and that Ashland games are seen by many as "high profile".

Personally, I believe that assignments should be at random because it removes the feeling, whether valid or not, that some officials have preferences as to assignments. I do feel certain that referees are human beings. Consequently, like the rest of us, they all have certain teams and coaches they like and certain teams and coaches they don't like. That is part of being human. Does it effect how they call a game? Probably a little for some and a little more for others. Maybe a call of a charge here and a block there.

I'm not insinuating that there is a blatant conspiracy to hurt certain schools for the benefit of others. I am saying that, since referees are human, they are not perfect and they are not completely unbiased. That is no indictment. It is merely, I believe, reality.

Finally, regardless of what may be said about AT41, no one can doubt his unwavering loyalty to his team, Ian Holbrook, and now to Drew McDavid. I am somewhat disappointed that he seems to have dropped his favorite from last year, Matt Thomas. Personally, I'll take Matt over McDavid any time.

Matt was not my "favorite" last year. I truly have no favorites. Im sure that from time to time this season you will see Thomas, McDavid and Wilcox grace my avatar. After Drew put up 43 I had to give him his due!

Hey AT, you need to make up a new conspiracy theory poster that features you and Frances. I never said the refree in question cheats. I will say that it seems he officiates a large number of Ashland games. Like scooterbob stated maybe it is because he gets the "high profile games" and Ashland is involved in a lot of those.

Frances, are you sure he now the rule book "backwards and forwards" or is that just a guess?

AT, I will give you that McDavid is better overall than Black but not in the post. Black is 2 inches taller and has a bigger body. McDavid is an excellent player but he nor can any of his teammates handle Black in the post and if Ashland has to double down or play zone Fairview has several good outside shooters. On the other hand I think Thomas is a tough matchup for Fairview. But so far this year Ashland has struggled against teams with a good post presence.

These veiws are just my opinion, I have no hard evidence to back them up.

:thumb: I just think that McDavid (an All-State DB) will be more than able to bang with Black in the post. I dont remember seeing Black put up 43, or even 33 for that matter.

The paranoia about officials is a little too much, Do they miss some calls? yes, but they usually miss them on both ends, I have seen very few games that the official actually decides the outcome, and that is how it should be. I have seen a lot of missed calls by officials at all levels, its called Human Error, look how many calls are reversed with instant replay at the professional level. The angle can always make something look a little different, but on average, our 16th officials do as good a job as officials anywhere else in the state. If there was truly a conspiracy with officials, Ashland would have been in the finals of the ait instead of getting beat.

Lets keep it real

Nice post! I cant believe I just said that, excuse me while I go take my temperature..... :D

I agree - completely.

Frances

I understand there is going to be human error in officiating. That's an inherent part of it, and no official will get the call right every time nor see everything that should be called. The only beef I have about some officials in our region is they tend to make calls when they are not in the best position to make the call. Yield to your partner who has the play/call in front of him. I'm probably not the only one who can say that there are some officials in our region who think that the people came to see them and not the game. But to get back to the source of the tread, I can't wait to see the outcome of the game Fri.. ;)

Spindoc makes a great point. The best refs IMO are almost invisible. By this I mean, they are not out to impact the game in any way other than to let the kids playing settle the outcome, while preventing fights and injuries.

The kids should be allowed to determine the outcome fairly, with as little interference as possible from the refs.

I've seen thousands of games, all over this country, and I've had the opportunity to see the best and the worst in action. I've seen many refs who clearly altered the course of games, either by intent or ineptitude. But in all fairness, I've seen many. many more good refs that left as little fingerprint on the games they called as possible.

A great ref, IMO has a great deal of humility, and is working to serve the kids and the game, not his own ego.

Drew will have no problem guarding Black on the post routes, unfortunately, Fairview doesnt go "deep" with Black, they go inside, and the difference is Drew is a point guard that is versatile enough to play the post while Black is a true post player, Williams should be guarding Black but that doesnt work at all, Drew is the only one that has a shot, and while he will give it his absolute best and do a decent job, he is playing a little out of position so look for Fairview to have an edge in the post. I look for Ashland to start with Williams on Black, get in foul trouble, go with Bonner, who cant stop him, and then try Mcdavid on him after its "too late" Thomas and Wilcox are going to have to oustcore Fairview on the outside to win this game and I just dont think they can, Fairview is just too balanced

So unless the refs give Ashland every call :scared: (evidently that is possible according to some posters) at41 needs to be shopping around for that "midnight special" at the local tattoo parlor :ylsuper:

I think Fairview just set a record for number of posts about any of their games on BGP! (probally combined)

Sexy Rexy has his boys "in the hunt" :thumb:

and at41's "tatto backed guarantee" ala Joe Namath will make this a "must see" game of 2006 :D

That was my plan. :thumb:

I think that Matt Thomas will be the difference if the Tomcats will win or not. I think that without a serious performance from him, Eagles will prevail and send AT to the old "ink well". But I wouldn't put it past Matt to break out a little in this one!

Mathew is cerainly capable, and the x factor may end up being Cannoy, his hustle plays tend to spark the cats

Rex may get mad at you for helping Flynn figure out how to beat Fairview ... :D

Rexy get mad? no way, he just loves to play the game and compete, besides, this is an "anonymous" board right? :D

nobody knows who anyone is :p

although I guess we will be able to figure out who at41 is if Fairview wins! :ylsuper:
