That Hazel Green was not the Hazel Green Academy from Wolfe County. I know that's what the site/link posted says, but I checked the KHSAA site for the history records. That was the Hazel Green (Bullfrogs) from London in Laurel County. Hazard won the 1940 14th region tournament, not Hazel Green Academy. The Mountaineers were not in the state tournament that year.

I knew it wasn't the Hazel Green Academy,in Wolf Co. As that was only 10 minutes from where I grew up. But I wasn't sure what county it was in. I do remember the good team HGA had in the 60's with Jimmy Hollon that played college ball at Alabama. Professor I am sure you remember him.

I remember him very well. They also had a kid named Roy Rogers that was a good player. They beat us in the championship game of the 56th district in 1966 in a game I didn't think we could possibly lose. We beat Lee County in the first game and Hazel Green Academy either defeated Wolfe County or Powell County (not sure). I thought we were home free because we had already defeated the Mountaineers twice during regular season play, but Hollan and Rogers had other ideas. Hazel Green Academy seldom won the district tournament. That was the only time I can remember that they won it. They may have won it back in the '40's and '50's, but I'm not aware of it.

At that time it was Lee County, Powell County, Owsley County, Wolfe County, and Hazel Green Academy. Hazel Green Academy closed it's doors in the late 1980's and Wolfe County has since been moved to the 55th district, and Estill County is now in the district.
