Not a terrible deal but not great either. Closer is one of the most overrated things in baseball, IMO. Heck, St. Louis had one of the worst bullpens in the league for 2/3 of the season last year. January 11, 201214 yr Madson had more Ks but Coco's WHIP was better. Not sure if it's worth the 3 or so million they would have saved, but for 1 year, I'm not complaining.

I don't think everyone is that down on Coco, but it seems he wasn't keen on a 1 year deal and Reds were in that market, and your right the Cards Bullpen wasn't great for 2/3's of the year, they weren't that good for 2/3's of the year either. Not that it directly correlates but it matters.
January 11, 201214 yr And for the record I wish Coco was back, he brings a fire to the team while still being a very respected guy on and off the field. I fell in love woth him last year when he wouldn't take any stuff from that team in St.louis's bench.
January 11, 201214 yr Mike and Mike just said it was 1 year for $8.5 million so I wonder if there are incentives to make it higher. On 700 WLW they said it was around $10 million and they also mentioned that Walt told Coco earlier this week he had to make a decision. I'm sure he wanted 2 years. This is a great move for a 1 year deal, even at $10 million. I'd put Heisey in left and let him go for at least two months.

I like Madson. I know the stats, but who knows what was going on with Coco. And your last two sentences: True, St. Louis had an awful pen for 2/3 of the season. They also led the league in runs scored @ the trade deadline and were barely over .500. Any coincidence that they turned it around and went on their run when the pen figured it out?

January 11, 201214 yr Looks like it is only for 8.5 Million. Coco made what, 12 mil last year? So they cut 4 mil for 2012 for a guy whose WAR was .1 different? I'm not very familiar with what the Reds plan to do with the closer position in the future, but this buys you 1 more year to decide if you can produce from within. Not to mention Madson will be pitching on a contract year again. I don't understand how this can be viewed as anything less than a good deal. They took some money off their books but should have just as good if not better production and now could have some wiggle room to sign a LF or wait till mid season and acquire a LF and eat some salary.

Depends on who's WAR you use. Fangraphs had Cordero at .1 last year, Madson at 1.7. I can tell you this, Codero won't have a BABIP of .214 again when he pitches. He was EXTREMELY lucky last yar.
