Newport won the game by 2 points. I believe it was either 81-79 or 80-78. I did not get there until the 4th quarter so I could not tell you how the game went.

The Birds trailed in the 1st half by a large margin (maybe 18 points) but kept chipping into the lead but were never able to tie or get the lead. Had several chances to tie with 7 seconds left but missed a contested layup. Several missed FTs and only 2 made 3s as I recall (both by back up PG Buten) doomed the Birds.

Birds down 70-69 after made FT by Witte with 10 seconds left and Turner steals inbound pass feeds Towles in lane Shot no Good, Witte rebounds Shot no Good, Both were contested strongly but didnt fall. Immediate foul puts soph JaQuan Short at line with 4 sec left, makes first Missed 2nd. Towles rebounds, pasará to Carter New who dribbles down as time expires launching a trey That falla short, game over 71-69. All 16 of Witte's points in 2nd half but earlier Missed FT's doomed the Birds. Newport was also on fire from behind the arc as Well as from the field. They had to of Shot over 50% for the game. Slow start and Missed FT's coupled with Newport's hot shooting were the keys.

Strong finish to come back from a 12 point halfftime déficit. Kudos to soph Drew Houliston for a Big 3rd qtr and Witte with a huge 9 point 4th. Just not enough and very frustrating.

All the boys can do is Keep their heads up and Keep working hard.

Congrats to Coach Snapp and the Wildcats.

Seems like the Birds are really struggling this year. Does anyone know how their Freshman and JV teams are doing this year. Do they have any young talent coming up?

Frosh aré 12-2 I believe and JV have a winning récord. They were down 27-8 to Wildcats last night and Came back to win 46-44. There is some nice talent in those two classes.

Newport Shot 28-53 for 53% from field. 6-10 from three Pt range. An. Merrill 7-13 4-4 (3's).

Cincinnati transfer Jayshawn Short 7-11 from field, 10 rebounds .

Conner transfer Craig Richardson 4pts, 5 Reb, 2 steals off bench.

That is good news for Bluebird fans.

Can't really read a lot into what the frosh team does at Highlands.

Guru has me on the payroll. Smartphones aré the devil as we aré blocked here at my office.

This is the same Newport team that struggled to beat Bellevue and Williamstown.

What is Highlands doing defensively that is allowing teams to put up over 60 points a game against them?

Looking at the rest of the schedule , with them currently sitting at 3-10 according to the KHSAA website, they have a much better chance of losing 15-17 games then winning 10 games. Not what I would expect out of a Mike Flynn team at all.

Scoreboard comparing can be detrimental to your health. I dont care what they Did against any other team they aré an athletic, disciplined bunch who played very hard, fast and Shot lights out. Considering the Birds Missed 10+ FT's in the game, Newport Shot so Well and they Still had a chance to win on 2 stickback attempts with 5 seconds left is remarkable. Shots arent falling for some Birds and 2nd chance points for opposing teams has been an issue.

I think this is a general statement that applies to most schools. Tough to gauge a programs future success based on freshmen records. Quite a few schools play kids up. Some schools play a lot of kids and use the level to develop players. HHS frosh are actually 12 - 3. Have won quite a few close games. Even with a very good record, I don't think they are in the top 5 frosh teams in N Ky.

I was told that the Short brothers just joined the Newport team. If that is true, this is not the same team that played Bellevue and Williamstown. They make Newport much more competitive.

That said, HHS should be able to put 4 qtrs. together and get a W versus Newport this year.
