Newport 71 Highlands 69

Featured Replies

I can't believe some of these comments. You all act like Highlands has the worst team in the history of basketball. Give me a break, come out and see a game why don't ya. Highlands worried about Dayton? Seriously? Newport is all of the sudden the 2nd Best team in the District because of a 2 Pt win? After having to shoot 60% from 3pt land, 53% from the field, after squandering an 18 Pt lead. Not to mention Highlands missed 10+ FT's. That wasn't very convincing to me that they are a better team.

Hey maybe this will help to get your district to seed. Wouldn't you be all for that?

They aré benefitting from some new additions to the program from Cincinnati and Conner as Well. Don't be surprised if the Wildcat program isn't under a microscope right now. You go back a couple years when Demarco and the 6'6 kid Nazi all the sudden showed up and they won the Region. Now the Short brothers appear on the scene when the program is short on talent. I have even heard that Campbell originally was planned to go There but it didn't work out.

The sky isn't fallingin FT Thomas folks.

I do not follow the program that close as my kids are in the Campbell County school system and play for those teams. But to bad mouth Dayton in my opinion and act as if the Highlands team is light years ahead of them would, to me, be very short sighted considering the few teams Highlands has beaten and the talent level of those three teams. My point was if you seeded Newport WOULD be the number 2 seed in the district whether it was a 2 point or 12 point win. Further Highlands would have to prove by beating Dayton on the court to be the three seed since both of them have beaten Bellevue. I never said the sky is falling in Ft. Thomas and could care less if it is, but your accusations against Newport coming from that area is quite comical.

Your point about Newport shooting percentages.....well I would venture to guess the Highlands defense had a lot to do with their high shooting percentage. Look a 3-10 team is a bad team (right now). Every game cannot be just "luck" or "take out this kid or if we would have made free throws" excuses for losing. I would assume this team has enough talent to turn things around and I have no ill will towards them and hope the do start playing better....but currently they are just a team not playing good basketball.

Let's also not forget Willie had a 9-20 record in his 1st or 2nd season at Highlands and they made the Regional tournament I believe. I'm almost sure it was the year Vories, Johnson, Smith and Guidugli were sophomores.

04/05 season. I don't think they were sophomores.

I'm all for seeding. I didn't mean to make Dayton sound like a cake walk however dayton does not get the cincinnati transfers so what are pure size advantage and athleticism I don't have any worries there . That is just confidence in the highlands basketball team not a put down today. I just think it's funny with all the scoreboard watchers out there how they can offer any insight into what this highlands team can or cannot do. I certainly wish they would win more games however in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter until tournament time. in my opinion from this point on you can throw out the football shape excuse. I would start looking at what they do from here on out and not what they have done since december ninth. I also realize many people love to see highlands not do so well it comes from the thumpings they routinely endure during football season. Hence the redheaded stepchild analogy the program has right now. Every night they have a bullseye on there back because of the name on their jersey. Once EVERY kid That puts the jersey on realizes That and brings that Same intensity we will be fine. You cant win games unless you Bring some toughness to the court and you Punch em in the mouth right out of the chute.

You're right. The football team has won five consecutive state titles. We know that, but the basketball team is definitely struggling. I would think they will improve come tournament time when it matters.

They make the decision the year before.

04/05 season. I don't think they were sophomores.

Correct those kids were JR's the 9-20 yr.

Messmer's last season 2003/04 he was 8-16. That was coming off the prior year when They were 27-3, Neltner's Sr yr.

Willie's first season They were 9-20. The next year which was Vories and that group's SR yr They were 23-8.

With NCC being far and away the strongest team in the district this year, does that entice Newport to vote for seeding. If you were Newport wouldn't you rather take your chances with HHS in the 2/3 game than hoping to draw opposite the Breds.

If the decision is still to be made, I think Newport would be smart to vote for seeding this year.

In addition to being decided in advance before the year starts and requiring "seeding games," doesn't the decision also have to be made for all sports as well?

Sounds like Newport is developing a pipeline to Cincinnati for kids.

Two brothers is a pipeline?

Two brothers is a pipeline?

Those are the only two that could find addresses from what I understand. Look at Demarco and Naz 2 yrs ago when they won Region. It is quite evident that Newport is the first stop and when that doesnt work the next stop is Latonia.

So what is the story on Campbell? Why did he end up at Holy Cross instead of Newport? Where did Campbell start this school year? I ask that because I remember reading in other threads that Campbell didn't join Holy Cross till 2 weeks before the season?

It seems like there is a triangle consisting of Cincinnati, Covington and Newport. And any movement within that triangle is never questioned. Maybe that are is considered one big city. It's just strange.

I believe that is correct.

Dont get me wrong, I am all for kids who come from troubled situations given a better chance or an opportunity but its almost starting to become ridiculous. I know last season there was a stud sophomore kid who was literally homeless and working out with Sherwin Anderson. He was trying to get him into Newport and Holy Cross but his grades werent good enough. It was a sad situation and the kid was a dynamite player. I think that same kid may have even participated in some summer hoops with Holy Cross.
