Charging foul

Featured Replies

This is one of the most misunderstood calls in the game of basketball,IMO. When did the charging foul change from running over a player, to bump and flop?

When every offense player started lowering their shoulder and driving to the basket and being completely out of control!

I wish high school would adopt the half circle. If you're out it's a charge, if you're in it's a block. Less judgement by the stripes.

I was going to say the same thing, but didn't know the term for the line. Half circle makes sense.

I agree the half circle would be a huge help.

If you lower your shoulder and plow into someone, that has always been a charge. I continually see players flop when they are just bumped into, not run over, no lowering the shoulder. I'm talking about a 5'10' 150lb guard bumping a 6'5" 220lb center, and the big guy hitting the deck. That same 6'5" guy can bang against another player under the basket, over and over backing him up, and no foul called there.

Hows is nothing called? When two players collide and both go down ,not a block not a charge !!!!

We have all seen this happen, I have to assume the refs look at like off setting penalties in football.

I hate that the block/charge call is so subjective to the referee. It's the only call I can think of where it's totally a judgement call on the ref's part. Very rarely do I see them make a block/charge call where the other coach whose player picked up the foul isn't upset.

Not always true.

When Boyle played Highlands Boyle's small forward, Kyle Rice, was going to score and lowered his shoulder(while pump faking) into Patrick Towles who flopped big time(complete with hitting the deck and the loud yelling that comes from getting trucked) and drew the charge. The whole gym just started laughing. No way Kyle runs over Patrick Towles. I gave him a 9.8 on the flop though. It was a Duke quality flop. As a Duke fan I was proud of him.

On the otherhand, how many times have you seen the 6'5 kid get slapped and smacked as he is shooting and he goes through contact, the ref doesn't call the foul because the big kid doesn't stop his shooting motion, but the shot is missed. Then on the other end the big kid barely bumps into the smaller player and the ref calls a foul because the smaller kid isn't strong enough to take the bump. I see this all the time! It is all subjective.

Very true.

Starting to see a trend of point guards getting full body cavity searches while bringing the ball up with no call as well.
