Of coarse you don't put much stock in top 10 defenses because that goes against what you say. You point out how Dalton's numbers haven't been that great, well playing top 10 defenses does matter when it comes to that. It's not like he has played the defenses from Green Bay, New England, New Orleans. Do they win those games honestly I admit probably not because those are elite teams and they haven't beaten elite teams. However does he probably put up even better numbers and maybe even his best numbers possibly. So top 10 defenses does matter when your going to put down a QB and a rookie QB at that when he hasn't put up 200 yards in a game much.

 

Their record against top 10 defenses is 4 and 6 I believe.

No doubt the three you listed, the three you listed are some of the elite in football. We also have no idea how the offense would look against those teams. Maybe the offense would look real good just like most teams when they play those teams, and would make Dalton look even better. You complain about Dalton's yards, but act like it doesn't matter that he has played 10 top defenses. Not to mention those offenses you mentioned have veteran established QB's, what don't you understand about that. I doubt those QB's have even gone against that man top 10 defenses either this year. They would still do better I admit. It's silly for you to complain about that.

 

Which by the way Arizona is not a good team but an average team who was really hot at the end of the year. Winning 6 out of your last 8 is pretty good, and the Bengals beat them.

Oh by the way here are teams who have top 10 defenses who are in the playoffs Steelers, Ravens, Texans, 49ers and actually those 4 teams are the top 4 teams in the whole NFL in defense. Steelers and Ravens are two teams that also many people would consider favorites to win the Super Bowl. So yes those teams you mentioned are some of the better teams in the NFL. Just like some of the teams I mentioned. Actually there are 5 teams who are in the top 10 on defense and 5 teams who are in the top 10 in the NFL on offense in the playoffs. So it doesn't take a top 10 D to be good right? Here are some things those 4 teams have in common. They all played the Browns at least once. 3 of them played Jacksonville and Indy at least once while Houston got them both twice each. 3 of them played the NFC West except for SF that got to play the other 3 not so high octane offenses in that division twice. It highly benefits your D stats to play terrible offenses.

To me the guys that make the lines and the guys that bet on the games professionally are better analysts than guys ESPN roll out to talk about football.

So basically the Bengals using the defensive passing rating played 9 games against top 10 passer rating defenses, instead of 10 games. The only defense that falls out of that category from before was Jacksonville. Also five playoff teams have a top 10 DPR. The Bengals are 16th in the NFL in OPR which is right in the middle of the NFL, and considering they played 9 games against top 10 PRD defenses with a rookie QB and still finished right in the middle and only 6 spots a way from the top 10 is not to bad for a rookie. Using those stats that means the Bengals also played 4 games against teams with top 10 OPR and DPR in Pitt, Houston, and San Fran. So shows playing top 10 defenses even using that ranking does matter. 4 of their 7 losses came against teams who were in the top 10 in both. Out of the three teams you mentioned only Green Bay who has a great offense, also is in the top 10 in passing rating on defense. So shows Dalton and the offense probably would look pretty good against the likes of New England and the New Orleans. The Bengals might not win, but the offense may look better than normal.

 

So 9 games against top 10 passing defensive rating teams. Yet it is not even like he is in the bottom half of the league when it comes to ratings still. He did this while being a rookie, and obviously playing more teams with good defenses than not. Which by the way I would hope Dalton doesn't rank ahead of the other QB's, how bad would that be considering all the other QB's are veteran established QB's besides Tebow. So saying he is only a head of Tebow in playoff QB's is not a bad thing since he is a rookie and all.

Well even using the other argument the Bengals still played just about as many games against top defenses haha...As for Dalton you could be right maybe. However for him to do as well as he has as a rookie with no off season. You have to assume he will get better. He really does remind me of Drew Brees, and remember no one ever would have thought Brees woud be what he has became after his first few years in the league. Both had the same critque about them coming out being smaller and not suppose to have strong arms. That is why Brees fell to the second two.

 

This is a debate we should just stop for now, and revisit in a few years instead of going back and forth on it haha.

The Bengals have had good success this year, that should equal a harder schedule next year, something they benefited from this year. Hope they can win their first playoff game in a long time and build from there.

No doubt. Between that, his high IQ and his leadership they found a great deal in the 2nd round. My only contention is his arm (might) not be strong enough to win big, but what he gives them for where they got him is outstanding. AJ Green will no doubt help him too.
