Oh, the old if you don't like it join it argument. Not valid. You don't hear a judge saying "If you don't like my decision go to law school". I don't get to tell people, "If you don't like how I do my job, go to school".

You are 100% correct. However, just like I don't know the wording of the laws and how to enforce them 99% of the people in the stands do not know how to properly evaluate an official. I'm being kind when I say 99%.

Broad, general statements like this earn no creditability.

 

All officials across the state are not horrible! Many are quite good at what they do and have been doing a great job for many years. Some are a disservice to their profession, and should seek other lines of work.

I've seen officials who start at the bottom, rise to the top, and others who stay at the bottom.

 

Officials who make bad calls on occasion are to be expected. Others who are incompetent but continue to keep coming back are being unfair to the players and the fans. I would venture to say that the majority of varsity officials who have worked at that level for any amount of time and get mid to top level games are good officials. Some officials' best quality is availablity. Some are young, passionate and still learning, whereas some are just looking to survive, get a game over, pick up a check and move on.

 

If you are familiaar with the officials working in an association you know who the good ones are and who the bad ones are. Who the no-whistles are and who the over-officials are.

 

I somewhat agree with Clyde that the majority of social fans coming to a game to root for the home team, will blindly blame officials for a bad showing by their team, whereas often they should be blaming their coach/team for poor quality of play or poor fundamentals.

 

In a recent game we shot 49 free-throws and the locals were all over the officials, meanwhile their players were reaching, body-checking, leaving their feet on defense, slashing in an attempt to block shots - all poor defensive practices, BUT because we shot 49 free-throws and the home team shot 21, the officials were horrible. Officials do not choose to be put in these unpopular positions, but find themselves thrust into those situations by the quality of play of the two teams competing.

Likewise, you're correct, most fans don't have a working knowledge or basic understanding of the rules of high school sports. Many falsely assume NFL/MLB/NBA/NCAA rules apply to high school sports. And, many just don't have knowledge of the rules at any level.

 

Like poor, misinformed, misguided fans; there are some poor officials out there doing poor jobs and provoking the complaints on here drawing the "if you don't like it, sign up to officiate" responses.

 

What we have to understand is: not all fans are ingrate of the rules and are just complaining because their team didn't win, and likewise not all officials are bad, just a small percentage, that draw most of attention of the public and the outrage that follows. We fail to compliment the really good officials, but don't hesitate to ridicule the bad officials.

Curious how many games and in how many different regions you have watched games to come to the conclusion "across the state" ? While at times there are some officials who may not meet standards, a blanket statement that implies you have evaluated officials (Note: I did not say watched games) across the state of Kentucky would not help lend credibility to your position.

 

I think it's great that you are travelling the state to watch a variety of basketball teams. I wish I had that kind of time and determination.

Just look back at the threads about refs getting state tourneys and almost all of them have someone have some bad remarks about them. Sit in the stands and all refs are spoken of badly. I have been so emabrassed by my team's crowd that I have had to leave or sit on the other side at times.

Refs who want more then just a paycheck are the ones doing a great job. They care about the sports, about the players, and about what they are doing and how they are calling. There are many horrible officials in this state, but there are many that are wonderful and do a great job!
