I'm wondering the same thing. Are you saying it is not Christian to believe that not everything in the Bible is meant in the literal sense? I can honestly say that is a view I've never come across before and am quite interested in hearing your thoughts on the matter.

Ever seen a good God debate? All of the ones I've seen the religious scholar or priest always concedes if you don't believe all of the bible, or at the very least the NT you don't believe Jesus is the son of God. Granted I've only seen about 10 but I wholeheartedly agree with that. I just don't think you can pick and choose true bible stories.

I sincerely don't mean this judgementally or negatively, but is that really an answer to my question? As I understand it, the books of the bible were written be different people and another group of people decided which books to be incorporated into the final work. Why do all of the works have to depict actual, true events and some not represent parables?

I was always under the impression Jesus spoke in parables quite a bit. Especially when he talked about a rich man entering heaven and stated it would be harder than a camel trying to go through the eye of the needle. I have never heard that he meant an actual needle, rather he was referencing a small gate.

Pastors and Preachers have been manipulated the bible to mean what they want it too for years.

 

The beauty of the bible (in my opinion) is I could read a passage and it means something totally different to me and my life as what the passage could mean to yours. Which is why we all develop our own faith. Of course there are those in place to help guide us, but still.

 

I really don't think the bible can be taken completely literally, and if you were going to, I would think you would need to read it in its original translation. There is a reason that there are 100 different version of the bible, because everyone has their own take.

It isn't so much picking and choosing, but rather interpreting it in a different way. I don't see how believing that God actually created the world over a much longer period of time than 7 days is changing the message. I do believe that the stuff in the NT is to be taken literally, as they are actual accounts written down by those present at the time. However, I have not read all of it so I am not worthy of a debate on the subject.

This is a very good point as well. If the son of God utilizes parables, why can't some of the Bible be in the form of a parable as well?

Well the Bible doesn't go into detail on every aspect, but I have heard this from many experts, and the thinking is if God created the universe and a man, why not more than just one? Even as a young man I would ask my teachers.."who did the Children of Adam & Eve marry. Did they just wait for their sisters to develop"?

 

The last verse in John states.."Jesus did many other things as well, If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have the room for the books that would be written."
