Final from Florence.

 

The game started out with a lot of running and shooting threes. Birds trailed 22-21 after the 1st period. The 2nd period is when they layed an egg and only scored 9 points. Down 39-30 at the half on a buzzer beating basket the Crusaders came out and extended their lead by as much as 16 I believe.

 

Hot shooting and pressure defense brought the Birds back as they tied it at 58. Bailey Witte had 4 treys in the game for Highlands and Sam Lewis was also hot from behind the arc. It was back and forth in the 4th period as both teams hit big shots and made plays. Darius Meiman was huge for the Crusaders in the final period, he can take over a game and has a great mid range jumper. The Birds had the ball down 3 with 30 seconds left and turned it over. Forced to foul the Crusaders hit their foul shots and pulled away for the 5 point lead.

 

Not a bad showing for many first time Varsity players for Highlands. It was the first time for all 5 starters and Sam Lewis was the lone Senior playing tonight.

 

NOTE- 3 key players were out of the lineup tonight for Highlands- Strong Sr PG Carter New was out with Strep Throat, 6'5 Pat Towles was resting some soreness and 6'2 Junior Wing Luke Turner was also resting a sore groin.

 

Great effort by the boys.

 

Referees were not very good tonight and it was a pretty good crew but they missed a ton. Also the guy keeping the clock and the book must have had difficulties. Witte led the Birds with 18 points and Lewis had 15 but whoever called the game in to the Herald Leader had it all jacked up. They couldnt even spell some of the kids names.

 

 

Highlands (0-1) -- Baten (its Buten) 3, Hinkel 3, Witte 13 (18), Lewis 20(15), Carter 11, Hauliston(its Houliston) 7, Hope 4, Gronotte 2, True 5.

 

St. Henry (2-2) -- Schwarte 2, Dedzen 9, McLaughlin 7, Gritshover 5, Hils 11, Carr 2, Kuebbing 19, Meiman 18.

St. Henry JV is pretty darn good but the Birds JV really struggled tonight. I think they could have shot a football better than they did the roundball tonight. LOL

The Witte boy must of been on fire. Someone please tell me about him. Size? Grade? Looking forward to seeing the Birds play when they are full strength.

Highlands will be a fun team to watch this year and will get better as the year goes on and they get footballers back. I was surprised at how well they shot the ball. They don't waste any time firing it up there. Witte played very well and is in the 6' 1" range, he has a nice feel for the game and should have a big year.

This was a triple header with the Birds winning the frosh game and losing jv and varsity..

If St Henry JV can put a full game together they are going to be pretty tough to beat.....and they are all Sophmores and 1 Freshman.

Yep, Kunsten is a thick kid with nice skills. They should try and develop him into the rotation by mid season. He can play Varsity ball but his play in the JV game was dominating at time.

What is the JV record this year? Who played well for them?

 

Much needed win for coach Faust. I know highlands was not at full strength, but they are never an easy out. Looks like some new names in the box score for the birds. They may surprise some folks this year.

He is about 6'1" and a junior, and he is a much better player than his father was.
