How does NKU recover their increased costs for going D1? Estimates like $3.5M? It's not like NKU has that money as "extra." Some part of NKU is going to pay for this move.

 

I'm not in the Board of Regents meetings, but I would guess that as they've been preparing for this move with their facilities, they have also been budgeting for this move for several years.

 

I'm not going to pretend to understand how it all works. But once they become officially a part of the Atlantic Sun won't they be bringing in quite a bit more money than they were receiving from the GLVC? I'd imagine that they won't make that estimated $3.5 million all back in the first year.

I don't have any more answers than anyone else and I'm not claiming to know anymore than anyone else. 4-5 years ago when I was very involved in SGA as the VP at NKU, I might have had credibility, even a year ago when I worked in the Admissions office I could probably drum up a few more facts for you. But now, I'm just an alumnus with an opinion haha!

 

I just thought it was a safe assumption. That being within a D-1 conference would bring in more money in sponsorships and things of that nature. That the being a part of a D-1 conference simply receives more than being in a D-2 conference. If I'm wrong please correct me, but I just thought that is how it worked.

 

I also feel as though when you are a university, you are compared to the community you surround yourself with, and I'm not necessarily referring to location because we all know that NKU will always be considered the little brother to UC or X to those that live here. They will now be compared to those in the Atlantic Sun vs. the GLVC, which I believe is a positive in regards to many things outside of athletics.

I read something on the Northerner site today that said the funds are coming out of the general fund which means state money and tuition money. In other words athletics will not pay for itself which means the school is going to use cuts in various school areas to pay for the increased costs.

There is going to be a "pep rally" tomorow for all of the sports teams and students to attend at the BOKC.

Good news. I am glad to see the program go D1. It should raise the school's profile and recognition. This is not the preferred conference affiliation but it was the best of the alternatives left.

Yeah, I'm not real sure. I would imagine that was all brought up during the feasibility study that they had done.

 

At first glance I want to say that the travel expenses are going to be tough to cover, but they were already traveling all the way up to Wisconsin, so it might not be too much more. And at least for the basketball team, they will be getting several "financial shots in the arm" each year. Expense wise I think the OVC would have been much better for them. All off my speculation.
