Here's the way I see it playing out. If Ok St beats the Sooners, they then move on to play Kansas St in the Big 12 championship the following week. That means they will be playing 2 top 15 teams, while Bama is sitting at home praying. If Ok St beats both the Sooners and k state, then I think its a given that they jump the tide. Nobody is talking about how they would have 2 big games left if they win. Those two will be enough to jump the idle Crimson Tide. Call me crazy, but i want a Cowboys vs Tiger national championship. I also think if the Cowboys win out, they deserve to be there.

There have been 5 teams ranked #2 in the BCS that were idle during Championship Weekend. All 5 played in the BCS title game. ESPN ran that stat all weekend. I don't see that changing as long as LSU beats Georgia. The most logical championship game will be played and I for one am overjoyed. LSU/Bama are the two best teams and they deserve the right to play for the title. If OKST beats OK and jumps Bama then that is the polls trying to manipulate the system. The two best teams are clearly LSU/Bama.

Well, it was 6-6 at the end and we had more passing/Rushing yards....and I need to show you the picture of the bad call..Now haven't we spun this around or me about 30 times, :sssh: I hope Michigan wins their bowl game. :idunno: I didn't know you were a Michigan fan until a few weeks ago.:thumb: I really respect their program and tradition. :ylsuper: Tom Brady beat us in the Orange in 99, but it was tied at the end. We missed an extra point. :scared:

The Cowboys have lost several games at Norman, but the Sooners pass defense can hurt them. Have the Cowboys ever won at Norman, can't remember the stats.

 

The Cowboys defense are ranked 106 in the nation. I still like to talk as if the Cowboys win and who should go to the Title game, and have not mentioned the fact they might lose to the Sooners, and Bama back doors in.

Going into championship week, USC was ranked #2 in the BCS, Michigan #3, and Florida #4. USC lost at UCLA, Michigan was idle (for two weeks - which most likely hurt them), and Florida beat Arkansas by 10. Florida did, however, jump Michigan following the results.

As to what #2 did during the championship week:

 

2010 - Oregon beat Oregon State

2009 - Alabama beat Florida in the SEC Championship

2008 - Oklahoma beat Missouri in the Big 12 Championship

2007 - West Virginia lost to Pittsburgh

2006 - USC lost to UCLA

2005 - Texas beat Colorado in the Big 12 Championship

2004 - Oklahoma beat Colorado in the Big 12 Championship

2003 - USC beat Oregon State (and fell out of the BCS Championship Game)

2002 - Ohio State idle (for two weeks) - Made title game

2001 - Tennessee lost to LSU in the SEC Championship

2000 - Florida State idle (for two weeks) - Made title game

1999 - Virginia Tech idle - Made title game

1998 - UCLA lost to Miami

 

So it happened three times, but none since 2002. Only once has a #2 team not lost in the championship week and failed to make the title game.

 

Can you believe we came that close to having UCLA in a BCS title game? Boy, the early days sure were crazy.

What is true of 2006 is that it is the mold for an idle team getting jumped. 2002 and 1999 don't really count as the top two teams in each instance were the only undefeated teams from major conferences, and you used to lose points for having a loss. In 2000, Florida State was idle, but Miami was likewise idle that final week, so basically the die was already cast.

 

But in 2006, Michigan was idle the final week. Florida defeated #8 Arkansas by 10 in the SEC Title game. Michigan did not fall in any computer ranks and actually increased their standing in two of them, but Florida jumped over them in one and increased their rank in all six computer rankings. That put them dead even with Michigan in the computers. The key component turned out to be the human polls, which jumped Florida from #4 to #2 past Michigan. What happened there was deliberate interference by the pollsters. Whether that was justified or not is in the eye of the beholder, but that is what it took to get Florida into that game.

 

As that applies to this year, what we have is a computer ranking that is closer now than it was then. Michigan held a .930 to .890 edge over Florida which turned into a .940 deadlock following the SEC Championship. Currently, Alabama leads Oklahoma State .950 to .930 in the computer ranks. What we also have is a human ranking that is much further apart than it was at that point. Whereas Michigan was one spot over Florida in each poll which amounted to 86 points more in the Harris and 40 points more in the Coaches, Alabama leads Oklahoma State by three spots in each poll which amounts to 342 points in the Harris and 156 points in the Coaches. That's a lot more ground to make up, and they would have to jump two teams in front of them to do it. I think one thing that would help Oklahoma State tremendously is if Virginia Tech would lose, clearing one of the teams ahead of them. They'd still have to jump Stanford to have a realistic shot, but Va. Tech losing would definitely help.

 

The point is (which I think has been made upthread) that the pollsters are going to have to jump OK State significantly up there in order to make up the deficit. They may receive a computer ranking boost, but even if they passed Alabama in all four computer rankings in which they currently trail them, that only gives them a .960 to .920 advantage. Currently, Alabama has a .9586 to .8397 advantage in the Harris poll, and a .9566 to .8441 advantage in the Coaches, which is huge. If you gave OK State the maximum in the computer rankings that they'd get, and gave them what is currently the 3rd ranked averages in each poll, they'd still trail Alabama .9451 to .903.
