There are no disincentives for the owners to stop spending like maniacs, which is what got these idiots here in the first place (Of course, they know they can always just con local politicians into covering their losses at taxpayer expense.) Rookie scales are reduced by 12 percent. The league could also move to contract teams and eliminate them from the league without consulting the union. The players would have to be crazy to sign this. They'd also have to be crazy not to sign it. That's where we are at this point.

The collective bargaining process has completely broken down and the union has disclaimed interest, meaning that they have formally withdrawn as official representatives of the players. He's also worked on the Bush-Gore recount, the Microsoft antitrust case and even Frank McCourt v. Jamie McCourt, the divorce case that found the Los Angeles Dodgers caught in the middle. The worst part is, the players should have done this MONTHS ago. They seemed to have labored under the delusion that the owners were going to play fair. They weren't... because they didn't have to.

At this point, David Stern seems like the rational man in the room with owners positively chomping at the bit to get every penny they feel they deserve. The owners and players have basically had a staring contest for the last few weeks. Nobody blinked, so it's time for the next thing.
