Attended the Ludlow/Lloyd game last evening and once again I came away very unimpressed by the behavior of Lloyds student section. Some of the things they say and words they use are out of line and totally unaceptable. I have experienced their behavior at their gym in the past and have listen as their administrators for the most part stand by and do nothing but wasn't aware that they took their act on the road as they did last night at Ludlow. I'm all for good natured fun and even some heckling but there is a line that should not be crossed and IMO Lloyd students go well beyond that line.

I have attended many CCH games in the past in IMO they have without a doubt the best student cheering section and from what I've seen they keep it on an acceptable level. Lloyd students constantly tried to call the Ludlow student section out with some of their distasteful cheers but for the most part the Ludlow fans took the high road. In all honesty what comeback is there for ignorance. Someone from Lloyds administration needs to clean it up or soon I expect other schools will not allow their student section to come to a game without a principal/AD/Dean of Discipline to stand along side them.

I know at Covington Catholic they always have somebody present, to TRY to keep it clean. Obviously it's very difficult to keep 25 students in line at a basketball game, and much more so to keep 50-100+ students under control; however, it does help.

By the way I agree with what you say and I know that I always see someone with the CCH student section. They are very good and even if you are on the recieving end you have to laugh. They do an excellent job.

I was at Lloyd vs. Dixie earlier this year and both student sections were awful. I will say that Lloyd initiated the bad behavior and Dixie was drawn in. Some of the cheers were totally off color and have no place in high school sports.

 

I love when there are large student followings at games and good natured kidding, even at the expense of my school. But the vulgarity and sexual undercurrent existent in many of the cheers needs to be eliminated.

 

I would concur that CovCath's administration does a good job keeping their student section under control and they typically have the loudest and best following. It Doesn't have to be vulgar or mean spirited to be supportive and fun.

There even is room for some friendly banter back and forth between the student sections. But when a student section as a whole is cheering a swear-word, there is a serious line that has been crossed. There were small children everywhere, and this happened several times. I felt it was truly an embarrassing moment for the school. Calling the Ludlow kids "River Rats" is one thing, many schools do, but do not bring your act of thugs in to our gym and use disrespectful language around our youth.

I witnessed the St. Henry Vs Lloyd game. St Henry didn't have a very good showing @ Lloyd that night but that didn't stop the students from chanting things that can't be written on this site.

If I'm the principal of Ludlow's opponent , I do two things: 1. tell my kids that "river rats" is unacceptable and 2. remove anyone that then feels the need to yell it during the game.

I don't think that anything R or X rated should be permitted to be yelled! But some hackling just makes the game more fun!! Most of the good players ignore what they hear anyway!!

My mom went to Ludlow and I say it to her when im just kidding around and she doesn't get offended. It's no different than people cheering "soap on a rope" to us. We hear it all the time it's not gonna hurt our feelings.

Really, I've always known it being for Ludlow. We said it when we played them in pewee too.

I grew up in Dayton but went to NC .Not only am I a Thoroughbred but also a river rat and proud of it . There is too much political correctness today .

I think it is used for any small river town. I heard it in my HS days about Augusta.

I attended the Tates Creek-LCA game last night. There was potential for some nasty things to be slung because one of the players for Tates Creek played for LCA last year. But the student sections kept it clean. There was some cheering against the former LCA player, but that is all part of the game. There was no malice toward the kid. The Tates Creek student section was yelling over to the LCA section for the cheerleader to sit down (LCA has a male student who is a cheerleader). In response he did a back tuck. I thought it was pretty funny and all in good fun.

 

The problem is when the cheering and jeering are carried outside the gym and fights happen after the game. Some students take the banter back and forth too personally. A lot of that can be avoided by having teachers and administrators present.
