November 4, 201114 yr I don't follow. I do, but I am not so coy. I hope hoops5 expounds upon his question.
November 4, 201114 yr So when you pray, you are praying the Holy Spirit? No, when you pray, you pray to God. The Holy Spirit will tell God what you are saying. In other words some people just say a prayer and don't really pray a prayer. Some don't know what to say or how to say it. The Holy Spirit will tell God what that person is really saying or really is in need of.
November 4, 201114 yr The book of Acts is the best place to start if a person really wants to learn about the church and its beginning. Acts Chapter 2 has the explanation on speaking in tongues. It explains that on the day of the Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit descended onto the 11 apostles who was in attendance and gave them the ability to speak in tongues. This was that they were able to speak in other languages. Some where in disbelieve and they said that these people were drunk. But it was Peter who stood up and preached Christ crucified, risen and the worker of miracles. He said that these men were not drunk because it was the just the third hour of the day. Which is about 9am. Which the Jews hardly every would eat or drink before then.
November 4, 201114 yr Author Very nice, nWo... Here is the verse on Tongues. 1st Corinthians 13:8.."Love never fails, But where there are Prophecies they will cease, where there are tonuges, they will be stilled". They are told to be done away with simply because they were now unneccesary. Also in Chapter 14..."For anyone who speaks in a Tongue does not speak to man but to God, indeed no one understands him". He utters MYSTERIES. But as we read futher on, if a person wants to speak this way and it gives him a deeper conviction. Paul is saying if a person wants to speak this way and feels like they get a benefit whats the hard, but do it to himself. Is a person Sinning by doing this? There are Churches many who do this. But you don't hear in much on the radio/TV in the Sermons. Why?
November 4, 201114 yr Author Paul also says "I'd like everyone of you to speak intongues, but I rather you have the gift of Prophesy, this is greater than who speaks in tongues". 14:5

I don't believe speaking in tongues is in existence as it was in the early church, but I think this particular passage in 1 Corinthians 13 is making a reference to the Second Coming. When Jesus returns, prophecies will cease, tongues will be stilled, etc. (verse 12 says, "Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.")
November 4, 201114 yr Author Randy, not reall sure on the second coming, but you could be on to something. Chapter 13 is known as the LOVE CHAPTER. Great verses.
November 4, 201114 yr Randy, not reall sure on the second coming, but you could be on to something. Chapter 13 is known as the LOVE CHAPTER. Great verses. Definitely a great chapter. I see it like this...God did certain things at creation that He does not duplicate today...namely, create humans as fully grown adults. He essentially had to do that in order to get mankind set in motion. Same thing with speaking in tongues, IMO. God allowed this in the early stages of the church, so that the gospel could reach every language & people group of that time. So in Acts 2, people from all these different nationalities heard Peter speaking, but they each heard this in their own language. God used speaking in tongues in the early stages of the church to get the church's ball rolling, so to speak. Then, once the gospel had spread everywhere, He took that particular gift out of the equation. It's a secondary issue, and one that I don't bicker over with people. Where I get frustrated is when some groups make speaking in tongues a validation of whether or not an individual truly possesses the Holy Spirit.
November 4, 201114 yr Big question. Simple answer: one of the three persons of the Holy Trinity, consubstantial with the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit is probably the toughest aspect to pin down of the Trinity because the Spirit has never spoken for itself. God the Father spoke directly to his people in the Old Testament. God the Son spoke directly to his people in the New Testament. God the Spirit has spoken through the prophets and through the saints. Tough to pin down at times. You explained it well, as always. I have to admit, the Holy Spirit does confound my understanding sometimes.
November 5, 201114 yr God the Father spoke directly to his people in the Old Testament. God the Son spoke directly to his people in the New Testament. God the Spirit has spoken through the prophets and through the saints. Tough to pin down at times. I was just thinking present tense that we would need to pray to the Holy Spirit, becasue from your post, God the the Father spoke in the Old Testament, and God the Son in the New Testament.
November 5, 201114 yr I do, but I am not so coy. I hope hoops5 expounds upon his question. I kind of sort of did in Post #25. Just a little embarrassed that after so many years I still need clarification.
November 5, 201114 yr Counselor is a word the New Testament uses to describe the Holy Spirit. That's the one label that has always helped me to understand His role. What a person looks for in a good counselor today is exactly what the Holy Spirit provides.
November 5, 201114 yr Author Who else was called Counselor? How come no one has called it the Holy Ghost. And is "IT" the right word for me to use. Most people who still want to use these gifts refer to the Holy Spirit as the Holy Ghost.

November 6, 201114 yr Counselor is a word the New Testament uses to describe the Holy Spirit. That's the one label that has always helped me to understand His role. What a person looks for in a good counselor today is exactly what the Holy Spirit provides. Other translations use the word "Helper", "Advocate" or my favorite "Comforter" in place of Counselor. I have always understood the term Comforter better. In John 15 Jesus is giving the deciples instruction and he says the following (KJV) 26But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: 27And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning. There is a lot in there to think about, IMO.
