September 28, 201115 yr I just had an insurance guy in my office today and I knew he wasn't from around here cause he talked funny. I asked him where he was from and he said Northern Kentucky. When I asked where he said "you probably don't know of it, it is called Independence". I asked him how close he lived to Simon Kenton High School and he was surprised, but it opened up a conversation. He said people had warned him about traveling in Eastern Kentucky, told him to be careful like he was in some kind of personal danger. 25 years ago I would have maybe understood that but in today's world it kind of surprised me. For the record, he said he didn't know what to expect at first, but had been pleasantly surprised, that he had enjoyed it and the people were very nice to him. He said one day he was going to Ashland after being here and one client wouldn't let him leave without feeding him a meal. So, are all you city fellers afraid of us hillbillies or what?

September 28, 201115 yr We're rowdy and rambunctious. Last night -- Wait, I should preface this by saying that I'm completely serious. Last night, I stayed up until 11:00. AND I ate only minutes before going to sleep. But before that, I laid on the couch watching television. Then I got up at 6:30 this morning to head to work. For lunch, I had a chicken strip basket from Dairy Queen. I dipped the chicken, fries, and the bread in the gravy. Tonight, if the weather stays nice I might consider taking a walk. Don't come here, it's obviously not for the faint of heart.
September 28, 201115 yr My mom had a cousin that was murdered in SEKY that was never solved. The case even aired on Unsolved mysteries. My family has it's roots in SEKY and I'd say 99% are good folks but there are some funny happenings in those hollars from time to time.
September 28, 201115 yr Author It isn't Disney World, but I feel safer anywhere in my neck of the woods than on any city street at night. But then again, I'm one of us. I'm not a city feller, a lawyer or even worse, a yankee. Seriously, though, is there a fear factor involved in traveling into EKY if you are an outsider?

I went to a concert in Atlanta a few years back.. We had passes to stay afterwards and meet the band, so we ended up hitting the streets about an hour after the concert ended. Our hotel was 2 blocks away from the venue, and that was the scariest couple of minutes of my life.
September 28, 201115 yr Man please......I am careful in any area of Kentucky(for obvious reasons that most of you are aware of....) that is not in 'town' and doesn't have street lights. Yes, that includes Boyle and Mercer County let alone Eastern Kentucky. I turn down my rap music in my car in Casey and Rockcastle County and will only get out of the car in those counties during the day. A brother can never be too careful. . Mr. Gattis in Taylor County was a funny experience also. I joke but I am kind of serious at the same time. You just never can tell and when you get a bad vibe.....
September 28, 201115 yr I lock my doors and roll up my windows every time I pass through Eastern Kentucky. No telling what those good old boys are up to.
September 28, 201115 yr When we're down in the Eastern KY area we always are careful to never go anywhere alone after dark. It's not so much the people, most have always been nice as can be, but more so the "emptiness" feel of the area. Lots of mountains and woods, very little in the form of commericalization, and just a feeling of it being an area that you could go missing and never be found very easily in.

September 28, 201115 yr EKY is not bad for the most part, then again I grew up here (Pike County). When I lived in Lexington I have never really felt that threatened and normally I don't even when I'm traveling. Did end up in a pretty sketchy neighborhood in St. Louis one time and that got a little intense but other than that I rarely feel for my safety, then again I keep the Glock .40 with me just in case. I will say this though, there are some places up in some of these real remote areas around here that can get a little sketchy, even if you are a local like me. There are still some hollers in EKY in which you still have to be pretty brave to take a nice vehicle up. I have heard numerous stories about some of these places that residents in some of these hollers would use to set up a road block of burning tires or things like that and ambush any vehicle that may end up coming up to it, they would then proceed to rob the person or whatever. Also have heard of people laying in the road (to block exit) as if they were hurt or needed help then someone else come along to rob the unsuspecting person. Again these were just stories I have heard and most date back to 15-20+ years ago, none the less, kind of crazy as they are supposed to be true stories of actual incidents.

I love being out in the woods where you know you are alone. Nothing more peaceful and relaxing to me. I like looking at the mountains, the rock fomations, the forests and you know you re looking at God's creation the way it has been since before the first settlers came into the area. Makes me feel like a pioneer, lol.
September 28, 201115 yr I'm not skeered of you Eastern Kentuckians. Heck, to be honest, I can't think of any place I've ever been that I actually felt scared. Maybe I'm just too confident, but I generally feel that I present more a curiosity in places than a threat. Considering I'm funny looking and tend to speak my mind, I'm used to being looked at weirdly. Only one person's ever pulled a gun on me, and that was right around the corner from my house. Still walk that way all the time.
