I think that score is indeed correct. That's what the update thread had it as.

Thanks Clyde, that is what the KHSAA has too.

Boone better than I thought. Props to them.

Score is right on. Knew Boone was in trouble when they were tied 7-7 at half. Should have been up 14-3. Defense was very impressive for first 2 and a half quarters. Picked Bir on 1st 2 drives of 2nd half and had a 14-7 lead w/ the ball in CCH's half of the field. Then things turned around. Boone threw Int on ball Schwartz was trying to throw away. 4-5 plays later the game was tied. Boone went 3 & out, actually losing yardage, and short punt gave cov cath the ball in boone territory. One 45-yard run later the score was 21-14. CCH's last TD came on a fumble return. Boone had a long TD drive, but did not recover the onside kick. The CCH O-line seemed to take over midway through the 3rd. This game was a coulda, woulda, shoulda for Boone & the score easily could have been flip-flopped. Thanks to both teams on a hard fought, close and very entertaining game.

Bir was held to 70 yards passing.

Good win for the Colonels. They show again that they are a second half team.

Should have gone to this game instead of Highlands vs Western

Sounds like Boone is rounding into the favorite for the 6A district. Bir with only 70 yards and a win tells me they are more than a one trick pony.

This was honestly a good old fashioned football game played by two very good teams and it indeed was sad that one team had to lose

CovCath stars of the game IMO:

Reese who played his heart out and made a huge INT.

Mathew Way who knocked the ball out of the hands of the BC runner and into the hands of Oberhausen for the TD.

Blake Bir: Yes he only threw for 70 yards and only threw for 1 TD today with two picks but on the Gabe Gray 47 yard TD run, it was Blake Bir who put a great block on a defender to spring Gray the final 10 yard into the promised land.

Spencer Hemmer: Some D1 College is going to be getting a PLAYER when they sign that young man!

Got to give some love to the CovCath Coaches staff for a great game plan.

CovCath defense comes through in win over Boone County

On a night when the high-powered Covington Catholic offense was spinning its wheels, it was the Colonels’ suspect defense that came through.CovCath took advantage of two second-half turnovers and held Boone County without a first down for almost 12 minutes of the second half to score 21 straight points that erasd a 14-7 deficit and went on to post a 28-20 victory on Friday night at Irv Goode Field/Owen Hauck Stadium.

CovCath’s defense entered the game having allowed 76 points in the last six quarters (35 to Dixie Heights and 41 in just one half against Cincinnati LaSalle in a game called at halftime due to the heat).

“They just buckled down,” CovCath coach Dave Wirth said of his defense. “Their confidence hasn’t wavered. They believe in themselves, but it certainly is good for them.”

The first of the turnovers came midway through the third quarter when Covington Catholic senior defensive back Brady Reese intercepted Boone County senior quarterback Kameron Schwartz at midfield as Schwartz was attempting to throw the ball away as he was being pressured.

“I thought he was just throwing the ball at the ground and I just stuck my hand out and I came up with it,” said Reese.

Wirth was asked if it was more luck, because Schwartz was throwing the ball straight to the ground, or athleticism that led to Reese’s interception.

“Probably a whole lot of both,” Wirth said. “You get lucky when you’re really athletic and Brady’s probably the best athlete on the entire team.”

It took CovCath (3-1) only four plays to drive for the tying touchdown, which came when senior Gabe Gray raced in from six yards out with 4:20 left in the third quarter.

After the CovCath defense forced Boone County to go three-and-out, the Colonels tookover on the Boone County 47 following the punt and on the first play from scrimmage, Gray weaved his 47 yards for a touchdown and a 21-14 CovCath lead with 2:56 remaining in the quarter.

Gray finished with 18 carries for 111 yards, with 94 of those yards coming on seven second-half carries.

The second big turnover came after Boone County took over on its own 5 with 6:55 remaining in the game. On 2nd-and-10, Rebels senior running back Drew Stuck, who rushed 23 times for 67 yards in the game, made a nice run for nine yards before being hit sophomore defensive back Matthew Way, who caused a fumble.

The ball popped in the air and sophomore defensive back Luke Oberhausen caught it in the air and raced 14 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-14 with 6:41 remaining.

Boone County (3-1) drove 74 yards for a touchdown on its next possession to cut it to 28-20 with 1:57 left, but couldn’t recover the onside kick and CovCath picked up one first down to run out the clock.

Boone County controlled the first half, running 33 plays to 21 for CovCath and outgaining the Colonels, 167-55, but the score was tied at 7-7.

Senior quarterback Kameron Schwartz hit 4 of 4 passes for 68 yards on the Rebels’ scoring drive, which started late in the first quarter and ended less than a minute into the second quarter with a two-yard touchdown run from senior wingback Bryson Thompson on 3rd-and-goal.

CovCath’s scoring drive was aided by two huge penalties against Boone County.

The first was a pass interference penalty just a yard across the line of scrimmage that by high school rule is automatically a 15-yard mark off. That took the ball to the Rebels 38 – the first time CovCath advanced into Boone County territory. A bigger penalty occurred on 4th-and-2 from the Boone County 30 when the Rebels jumped offside as CovCath kicker Evan Talkers was about to attempt a 47-yard field goal.

Five plays later, junior Blake Bir passed five yards on 3rd-and-goal to senior wide receiver Clint Massie for the tying touchdown with 3:25 left in the half.

The Rebels, who finished with 297 yards of total offense, took a 14-7 lead on their first possession of the second half after junior cornerback Jeremiah Williams intercepted a pass and returned it to the CovCath 33. Schwartz, who completed 14 of 32 passes for 224 yards, hooked up with Thompson on a 27-yard pass and run for the touchdown on 4th-and-4.

CovCath, which averaged almost 450 yards in its first two games and had 267 yards in one half against LaSalle, finished the game with 219 yards total offense. Bir was 8 of 16 for 70 yards and was intercepted twice.

Sounds like this one of the best games in NKY tonight.

Sounds like this one of the best games in NKY tonight.

It indeed was a great game!

BTW prior to this game, Boone County had only given up 27 points in three games (6,7 and 14), so don't think CovCath had a off night on the "O" side of the ball, this Boone County team, especially on the "D" side of the ball is the real thing!

IMHO after seeing SK, Campbell, Dixie and Ryle play (especially with Elliott out for the season) Boone is clearly the team to beat in the NKy 6A!

Congrats to the Boone County players and Coaching staff on an outstanding effort tonight!

BTW; The CovCath JV host the Boone County JV today @ 10am Saturday 9-10-11 @ CovCath.

If someone told you that CovCath held BCHS to less than 100 yds rushing and asked you to predict the score, would you have come up with this?

Hats off the Boone County team, they are a very good football team.

Good bounce back by the Colonels D.

Hats off to the soph combo of Way and Oberhausen on the TD.
