Artificial turf in Kentucky

Featured Replies

I think the artificial fields are a "god send" for the HS programs in Kentucky. From what I've seen, they are starting to pop up all over the state. Can anyone provide information on how they are paid for? Does the BOE in each system pay for these? How much is donated? Is it a combination? I know that the price ranges from at least 500,000 and up? Shows a great commitment to the youth in each area. Just curious... :thumb:

What type of field does Russell play on?

Food for thought....

Trinity, LexCath, and NCC (I believe) all play on sport turf....

NCC doesn't even have their own stadium and it's more like a baseball field. I thought I saw a picture or Russell and it was grass. Not sure if it was Bermuda or not.

Belfry, Letcher Co. Central, Highlands, Cov. Catholic, most of the lexington schools, ...are a few of the others

Newer school construction, receives financing from state organizations and can lump sum bid, in the contract with the particular manufacturer/style, already selected.

Renovation to install, most times is the result of private money being raised.

Don't they play at Newport.

Don't they play at Newport.

Yep. So does about 7 other teams. It turns into a dirt field by mid season. Not just the middle either, all around.

Plus, one tip of the end zone used to be blacktop as it was part of the track.

Belfry's turf was paid for privately. The new school construction was a county project, and there are 4 other county high schools in the system, so it wasn't justifiable for the BOE to pay for the turf. So it was paid for through donations, both corporate and private individuals.

Are you talking about Newport or HHS? :D

At Middlesboro we don't have it and don't need it.

No but the fellas up the road do. :fire: j/k

It still is, except it was frozen blacktop for the semi. Ask the 2 Somerset receivers who fell on their bums as well as the 2 NCC defensive backs who fell right behind them.

CovCath, Beechwood, Highlands all turf.

As I believe I recall:

CovCath wasn't as costly because some of the equiptment was already there for some classroom renovation that was going on.

Highlands wasn't as costly because Chris Collinsworth had some ties with the turf people and got a good deal.

Beechwood I don't remember other than it (the turf) got lost on the way.

I am TOTALLY against the idea of artificial turf of ANY kind in high school athletics. Like I've stated on this board before...it takes away from the true essence of the game.

it would be really nice if Russell could somehow get the artificial truf. Maybe the state title will get some wealthy businesses to dig deep in their pockets to fund it.
