Crean was in the gym the other night for the region tourney game. Shane's dad speaks very highly of Crean.

UK called the next day and said they are interested.

Well deserved, he is a humble young man that goes out and plays hard.

Shane Hall’s phone was busy

Shane-Hall0312mug-150x150.jpgThe first day of college coaches being able to call prospects from the Class of 2014 was a busy one for Johnson Central junior-to-be star Shane Hall.

The 6-foot-8 Hall, who recently visited Louisville and has also previously visited Indiana and has had contact with Kentucky, had a bunch of schools in contact.

His father, Brad, said UAB, Miami (Ohio), Western Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee Tech, Butler, Indiana State and Northern Kentucky were among the schools that called.

Hall is ranked as the No, 71 prospect in the ’14 class by Scout.com.

Could someone provide more detail about the strengths and weaknesses of Hall as a collegiate prospect?

What position would he be expected to play? 3/4 or more of a tweener? How does his skill set translate to moving out onto the floor, and what offensive/defensive style of play would best suit his talents?

I have only gotten to see some of his YouTube highlight clips, and many of those are from earlier in his career, so it is hard to get a good feel for what he brings to the table. From what I can gather from watching, I would imagine that adding weight to enhance his ability to finish through contact, defend, get and hold rebounding position, keep from being pushed around by defenders, etc. will be a concern at the next level, especially if he is going to be asked to play inside.

There are people on here who have seen him more than I but...

Great hops. Doesn't need a run to get up in the air. One step and he's exploding. Raw athlete and solid skills. Lots to work.

The 3/4 probably depends on the school and how much more he grows. Runs well in transition. I didn't see a lot of handle in the halfcourt.

He's still young, and has improved every season so by the time he graduates I look for him to be a solid 4. He will have to get a much better handle and perimeter shot if he wants to ever be a 3. As a 4 though he can be very effective with his combination of size/quickness/athleticism. In the 15th Regional Championship last season he put it all over East Ridge's Ray Kasongo. Kasongo is much more filled out and is considered to be much more powerful/explosive. Shane took it to him the entire game and finished with like 29 and 16 or something crazy. So the size thing isn't going to be as big of factor as what you would think, he should be filled out enough by the time he gets on a college campus and gets in a college weight program. I know JC has one of the best football programs in the state so the conditioning/weight training program at the school will be sufficient enough for Shane to shape his body if he wanted to put the work in to doing it. From the times I have watched him he has certainly shown signs of being able to hit the mid range so if he keeps rounding his game out I look for him to be a long athletic face up 4 who can do work around the rim and step out and hit the 15 footer. Should be a consensus top 75 guy by the time it is all said and done. Clearly one of the better prospects to emerge from the mountains in a while. His size and agility is what separates him.

I've seen him play several times. He seems like a very polite and respectful young man.

He is a tweener.

Not a great outside shooter but gifted athletically, handles descent.

Gets all his points at the line or right at rim.

I don't see him as a tweener. His future is at the 4 because he simply does not have the skill set to play on the wing. He is going to have to develop some wing skills to make it as a face up 4, but he seems like a good kid that is willing to work so I think he will be able to add those elements to his game. As it stands he is a good long term prospect that can get by on his ability to jump out of the gym alone at the high school and AAU level to a lesser extent..

I will say the one thing that really stood out to the scouting side of me was his ability to rebound out of area. When he has it going, he is a big factor on the glass no matter where the ball comes off the rim. That alone makes him a kid to watch at the high minus level going forward...

I was hoping you had seen him some.

I called him a tweener because he does not play with his back to the basket nor does he guard the rough, back to basket players.

I agree there, but I see very little chance he has a future on the wing. With the 4 out spread system becoming more the norm at the college level, his future is at the face up 4 spot from what I have seen. No question he will have to add some strength to be a factor there on the defensive end, but I just don't think you are going to be getting the best out of him at the college level hoping you can bring him in and eventually hope he turns into a 3. I've seen too many prospects like him get lost in the shuffle trying to become something that simply doesn't fit their ability...

Agreed.

I hate to say it but his game has not progressed a lot the past 2 years. I know he is just going o be a Jr., but he has added nothing offensively other than a jump hook.

Butler offered.

Congrats to Shane on the Butler offer, he is only going to get better. He has a great work ethic, I talked to his dad this summer and he said most of the schools are recruiting him as a 4. He can cause alot of problems at the 4 spot, most of the kids his size or bigger are not able to get off their feet as quickly as Shane. His ability to put the ball on the floor is getting better, and he gets to the basket very well for a 4. He does need to add strength and work on his outside shot, but the kid has two years of high school basketball to do that. Great to see Ky kids doing well, good luck Shane.
