Not sure how you figured that out? You only get 3 points for a win.

My bad, I was thinking old school..

I disagree, if he is consistent in the top 5 or 6, he will win the championship. But a few wins would help solidify his place in the standings when they place you from 1-12

That's your right to disagree but you would be wrong. When the chase starts the top 12 will be winning the races. Keep finishing 5th or 6th every race and that's where you will be when it's all over.

If you ran 5th in all 10 chase races odds are you would win the chase.

Tony did win 5 races in the chase last year, but he also had a 25 and a 15 to go with that for an average finish of 6.3 in the chase last year.

In 2010 JJ only won 1 race in the chase but he piled up 2nds and 3rds. He only had one bad chase race and had a 6.2 average finish.

However, to get an average finish of 5th you would probably have to win a few races.

Could you win the title without winning a race, of course you could. Has it happened no. Will it happen, not likely. And you pretty much illustrated why. It's almost impossible to not have that 1 or 2 bad races. You have to get that win to off set the bad finish.

The way the point system is set up I think it could happen but during the chase when somebody wins they usually get get a hot streak going.

Looks like JR will have a chance to see if he can do it w/o winning a race.

Average. Always has been. Always will be. Look at how he has finished in the He frocks stable since joining the other top drivers in NASCAR and that will tell you how average he is.

And I like Dale Jr. but let's be honest with ourselves. How many championships does be have? Better yet, how many victories does he have and where are they at?

Keep it real.

To me there is a difference between below average, average, above average, and top.

He is not a top driver, yet. May never will be. I do think he is above average. He missed the chase a couple of years, but I'm pretty sure he's finished in the top 1/3 every year.

For whatever reason his learning curve in the COT has been bigger than a lot of the driver's. At least he is back to being one of the top restricter plate drivers again. Seemed to find it last year, and has improved on it this year. We'll see.

He is a top driver he has been in the top 5 all season and only 10 points behind first place.

Agreed on him being an above average driver.

Disagree with him being a top driver. Half a season doesn't make one a top driver. Until he starts winning some races, finishs consistently in the top 10, or wins a title he will never be a top driver.

To me Jr isn't as bad as his haters want to believe and isn't as good as his fan boys want to believe. Like every story the truth is somewhere in between.

Jr leads Nascar in top 10s with 11 I think that makes him a top driver and one of the most consistent drivers.

Whether you want to admitted or not top drivers win races and titles or they compete for titles. Just making the chase doesn't make you a top driver. While JR has had a great year so far and is a very consistent driver, he is a consistent above average driver.

I consider top drivers to be the top 15 drivers in points the rest are average. JR is 3rd 10 points behind first place he is a top driver.

Jr hasn't been the same since this wreck at Sonoma in 2004 running a Grand Am event with Boris Said. Hasn't been the same since.
