June 20, 201115 yr I posted this in the other interleague thread but thought it needed its own thread. After the first 2 series of interleague play the American League looks to be dominating as usual with an overall record of 50-34 and a winning percentage of .595. Cleveland and Seattle are leading the way with records of 6-0 and 5-1 respectively while San Diego and the Reds have been the worst at 0-6 and 1-5 respectively. Thoughts?

June 21, 201115 yr Author The tally stands at 56-38 in favor of the American League after last night's games.
June 21, 201115 yr Author Why does the AL rule interleague play? Here's one take: The AL is just the better league
June 21, 201115 yr But why is the AL the better league? Back in the 60s the conventional wisdom was that the NL was the better league because it was first to welcome the black and Latin players. It would seem that the only material difference between the leagues now is the designated hitter rule. To my way of thinking, though, in interleague play the DH rule (or lack thereof) works against the AL, yet the junior circuit seems better head to head. How to explain this?

Did you read the article that I linked in my comment? It had some interesting insight.
June 22, 201115 yr It's absurd to say the DH and the money aren't reasons. His money argument is bad b/c Philly just started spending that kind of money and they've had very similar results to the Yanks and Sox. Also the Yanks outspend them by $50M per year or more. So the Phillies and Sox are similar but nobody is in the Yanks range. Also who wouldn't admit the AL is better? One more thing I'd love to know average salary per team. I'd bet the AL has a nice advantage there.
June 22, 201115 yr Heard something interesting on one of the morning sports shows. Someone (Athlon?) had done an analysis of mow much the MLB teams pay in salary (calculated at the beginning of each season) per win over the past several seasons; for some reason I'm thinking they said since 2004. I would have guessed that the Twins were at the top of the list; and they were 4th. Red Sox were second, and the Yankees were first.
June 22, 201115 yr ^ PS - my beloved Oriioles were dead last (no surprise there). Also faring poorly, among others, were the Mariners and the Reds.

June 22, 201115 yr How do you explain that the AL teams have a higher winning percentage over the average on the road without the DH vs home with the DH?It is more valuable to have a DH than not. Most NL pitchers can bat better, but not at an alarming clip over their AL pitching counterparts to make up the difference offset by a DH.
June 22, 201115 yr How do you explain that the AL teams have a higher winning percentage over the average on the road without the DH vs home with the DH? Easily. 1st off they are better and I don't know anyone who would argue that. However hasn't the NL held their own in the World Series lately? There are reasons the AL is better. Not just 1 reason. I would love to have Papi sitting on my bench waiting to pinch hit compared to say Heisey or Gomes in a close game at a NL park. Also ignoring the money the Yankees and Red Sox spend and have spent is absurd. I wonder what the Phillies record is against the AL the last few years?
