The ACLU!!!

Cobb Co is totally different, it is in a public place, the graduation is in a church. no where in the laws or constitution does it say a group has to take down a religious sign in a church because 1 old atheist doesnt agree.

I appreciate the prayer and will be the first to say I need them and thank you (if sincere)

That is the point, it should have never been in a church, mosque, synagogue, or any place of worship. It is a "public" event.

For 70 years it had been in the Church and no one objected.

I fully understood the accusation you are making in your example. Because I believe in the constitutional court-approved decision that separation of church and state includes prayer at public schools I must then be anit-religion or anti-Christianity. I'll pray for your ignorance tomorrow morning when I'm in my usual spot at church.

So would you tell the same thing to God on judgement day? Would you say you agree with making the church hide the CROSS and other Religious items? I pick the Church over something like this and I pick the the words of the Bible over the words of the constitution any day.

That means it was wrong for 70 years. Maybe no one objected because they felt there would be personal consequences if they did.

Slavery existed in our country for over 70 years.

Women couldn't vote in our country for over 70 years.

And...we don't know that no one ever objected about the graduation being at the church or felt uncomfortable.

In the United States, we are guaranteed to practice our religion, and are protected from others trying to force us to practice a religion we don't want to. We are also free to choose to educate our children in a religiously sponsored environment, provided we are willing to forego the tax-payer funded system of education. As a person who chose to pay to have my children educated with overt religious principals in practice, I don't see the problem with requiring a public school to hold ceremonies that are sterile of religious display or practice. At both my kids' graduations there was prayer. One was held at a convention center. The other was held at Knight's Hall at Bellarmine University. Both were private, and we all knew that prayer and religious overtones would be the "norm". That's simply not the case for students of a public school. Imagine if the school had asked a Catholic priest to speak, let alone say a prayer, at the graduation. There would be all kinds of a bruhaha about that.

You are using red herrings to avoid having to confront the law of the land.

You don't seem to pick Jesus' words in the text I quoted earlier. Hmmm.

The Supreme Court ruled against you awhile ago. Look up the case Lee vs Weisman.

Summary of the case: A principal wanted a rabbi to speak at his schools graduation ceremony. A father disagreed and filed law suit. It made its way to the Supreme court. Supreme Court ruled that having a rabbi in public school violates the state sponsored religious exercise in Pubic schools.

1 man didn't like something that maybe a majority of the population didn't mind. But he got his way.

The Supreme Court may make certain judgements, but they do not always get it right. Various decisions by the Supreme Court upheld slavery and Jim Crow Laws as constitutional.

The Judges were upholding the constitution and the Establishment clause. Its purpose is to not advance or inhibit religion.

Just so you know, I have no problem with prayer at school. Personally, I cannot stand it when I hear of a story like this. I think it is ridiculous when I hear of 1 man out of 100 people not like something so he complains but it is his right. Just like when I hear of people burning the flag (its extremely disrespectful) but people have the right.

I agree with RM when she says we have the right to put our children in religious school settings and if we don't like it that we can't pray in public schools then put them to a school where it is in the atmosphere. My parents did it with 5 out of their 7 children. I chose not to and remained in a public school.

I wish the Ten commandments where allowed to be displayed in public schools. As long as they post it right next to the Church of Satan's The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth.I have no problem with religion being displayed in the public eye as long as all religions get there share of space!:thumb:

What was the Supreme Court doing when they upheld slavery and Jim Crow Laws? Just as these decisions are now viewed as being bad interpretations of the Constitution, maybe soon some of these decisions about prayer in the public forum will be reversed.

Dont hold your breath, as long as we have some that feel religion should be put aside for the sake of mamaw, then we are doomed.

One is about slavery. The ownership of another human being and being able to treat them like an animal for the sake of a profit. The other is religion and whether or not that a principal should allow a rabbi to pray at a public school over the kids. Not really seeing the comparison.

Not likely. Allowing that to happen would inhibit religion, which goes against the constitution.

You put words in peoples mouths like no other. Re-read the posts that people put on here about 5 or 6 times and perhaps you will be able to comprehend. No one is saying it should be put aside. No one. I'm happy your town has had the graduation in the church for 70 years. If no one cares, more power to you.

What happens when a small area is predominately Muslim and they have a graduation ceremony in a small mosque and it becomes the town norm to do so. Are you going to complain? Based on your recent posts, I am sure 100% of the posters on this forum can answer that.
