April 30, 201115 yr I love what Tampa has done. If Bowers is healthy at any point next year Tampa won the first two days IMO. I like what the Bengals did. I just have a hard time believing that it will turn out great because it's exactly what they wanted and they ususally are clueless. I guess Arizona and Seattle have other plans than the draft for QB.
April 30, 201115 yr Author I'm glad Seattle's plan isn't Ryan Mallett. I hope their plan is Carson Palmer. Winnable division for him and we can see if he is good or if he really sucks (I'm leaning that he sucks).
April 30, 201115 yr SSC ... I really do not think the Bengals will trade Palmer. He will play in Cincinnati or he will remain "retired", as Marvin called it. I know you have felt otherwise in the leverage talk on here, but the Bengals hold ALL the leverage on Palmer now that they have Dalton. Sure, it isn't good going into a season with a rookie QB, but it is starting to happen more in the NFL. The Bengals want to run the ball anyway so they will just go the Ravens/Dilfer route and take their chances if Palmer chooses to stay "retired".

I don't think they will either but how does he not have leverage now that they drafted a QB so high? They owe him $11.6 million if he shows up the day before the season starts. If they prepare all preseason with Dalton and Palmer shows up they still have to pay him to sit. That is leverage. They should trade him. They are ready for a new start.

I replied to this in the other draft thread. The reason it gives Palmer no leverage is because the Bengals would love for him to show up at game 1. They get their experienced QB back and a mentor for Dalton. Big Ben didn't make it to the field till game 4 last year and the Steelers did just fine. That is no leverage for Palmer. Palmer needed all the QB's to get picked and for the Bengals to be going into the season with nothing except Jordan and the other guy. In that case, he may have some leverage. But that isn't the case.

I would hope Brown is good with the draft pick and would trade him for picks rather than be stubborn and make him retire. I know though that it's a lot to ask Brown to think like that

I know though that it's a lot to ask Brown to think like that It is in the Bengals best interest not to trade him IMO, or not until the season starts. Yes it will hurt the value they could get for him, however if they are thinking about winning right now which I believe they are. Then they know that best chance still comes with Palmer. With how they drafted now, they really can play for now if Palmer comes back while also building for the future. They have a very winnable schedule this year, a new offensive system which should help. Talented receivers and TE's, and with it being a West Coast system it should help the line since its a lot more quick passes. However they only way they can do this is to try to call Palmer's bluff. If he comes back then great, and they could win this year and Dalton could learn while sitting. Then if he really does retire they have the QB of the future and he can play right away. Then you trade Palmer for just whatever they can get at the time then, even if its less than what they can get now. The Bengals are in a great position if Palmer comes back, because they know they can play for now and it is still building for the future to in the process.

I don't mind if they wait until the seasos starts to tade him. I'd just hate to see them never trade him so he stays retired losing all of his value. As someone else mentioned earlier they have done pretty decent historically in the second round. I'd take my chances on having an extra secound rounder for him.

SSC ... finally you make a point I can agree with you on. Yes, if Palmer keeps holding out I hope they trade him some day versus just letting him sit out the rest of his career. I think futurecoach has it right. The Bengals will march forward and if they go through a whole season or get deep into the season and are doing well without Palmer, I think they will start to entertain trades. But I will be very surprised if they trade him before the halfway point in the season. If they do trade him then, it will be good news because they will be winning a lot of games and feel like they are ok without him.
May 1, 201115 yr I think the Bengals should trade Palmer, take your lumps this year, get a couple more nice draft picks for next year and start building...

The trade deadline is pretty early in the season I believe but I'm not 100% sure. It's bad business to waste his trade value by not doing it ASAP if they believe in Dalton. Brown is stubborn enough to waste value though. If they don't want to trade him for a couple of picks to a West coast team when he packed up and left and his performance has gone downhill every year since the arm injury they aren't very smart.

It has nothing to do with believing or not believing in Dalton. A proven veteran QB wins over any rookie in the NFL and there isn't a team out there that wouldn't prefer to start a proven veteran. Carolina would start Palmer over Cam Newton without thinking twice. If I were the Bengals, I would hold onto Palmer as long as possible and hope he comes back. I would probably keep him all season unless the team was winning a lot with Dalton at QB. If Palmer sits out the whole year, then Dalton has a year's experience and if I am happy with him, I look at trading Palmer. Not until then and even then, not unless I like what I see out of Dalton.
