I've used both and like both. But, for what I do with my personal computer and the friends I have, any advantages a Mac may have aren't worth it.

If I worked in any kind of graphic arts, video, or photography field I would unquestionably have a Mac

Btw, the Zune flat out sucks and an iPod is superior. And I would choose an iPhone over any other smartphone without a doubt. I've used many other kinds extensively and I feel the iPhone works better for me.

As far as the the Zune, I thought that I heard the Microsoft was going to stop production of them due to the demand being so low.

Mac. Graphics are better which helps with videos and pictures. Its a lot faster. They last three times longer, batterylife is sooo much better. The virus protection is much better.

As has been noted before in this thread, this is a myth.

Graphics depend on the hardware which depends entirely on the video card you put in a PC and what your Mac has. Give me a dollar amount for what you would spend on a Mac and I can build you a PC with better and faster hardware for the same price.

At a school (especially an art school, with graphic design people), I'm guessing they have some older ones, and the older ones can be a nightmare to work with.

Yup. In our office, folks who use PCs aren't able to open Word files created by or that have passed through the Macs, because the Macs were spreading a virus around. So yeah, Mac users, I'm betting you have viruses. You just don't know about it since it's not evident on your end and are therefore gleefully helping hackers distribute viruses around the globe.

The Macs in question here were personal computers, not school ones.

The way they are built and the way they run is much different than windows. Considering that most viruses target windows, I would say that the way macs are built and the software that is ran is an anit-virus protection program itself. So therefore they are built to withstand the main viruses that PC's use and therefore they are better at protecting against them.

So no, its not a myth.

I have a family member who owns a radio prep service. His jobs requires him to visit a lot of sites that would give him viruses if he used a PC, which he did for a while and went through several. He has had a mac for over a year and has not gotten one. There is really no comparison.

I know that all the animators at Robot Chicken and South Park all use Mac's for their graphics and editing.

I think the usage of the software and what mac offers is better and is easier to use with Macs and that would play into the Macs favor over PC.

You aren't getting it. The reason there aren't viruses for Macs isn't because their protection is so amazing or because it can't be done, it's because there is no reason to do it. If I were a hacker, why would I create a virus that would attack something that less than 10% of the computer using population has? That would be stupid. If the roles were reversed, and Macs made up 90% of the population, they'd be the ones with virus issues, not PCs. The hackers aren't going to waste their time on Macs until they have a bigger market share. It's that simple. Has nothing to do with how they're built, etc.

You do realize this just furthered my point?

PC's are built to run windows and most viruses attack that. They attack it because most people use windows like you just said.

My point is that the macs using a different hardware which has to do with how they are built, plays in favor of Macs so they don't have to worry about the viruses that attack windows as much because they are not targeted for their hardware/software.

Apple just built around the viruses, I'm well aware they didn't make the Holy Grail.

General absence of viruses, does not mean the virus protection is better, which was your original statement. That statement is, as Jim said, a myth.

BTW, the term "viruses" is practically out of date anyway. These days, almost everything that is referred to as such is in reality spyware/malware.

If they built their system to not get what most PC's are vulnerable to...I would say its a tad better.

By that definition I could then say that PCs are built to be tremendously safe against Mac viruses. Remarkably, they're pretty good at not getting Linux viruses either.

Are Macs better than PCs at not getting Windows viruses? Sure.

I didn't want to get into the argument this time, but as a 30 year IT professional and programmer, I will tell you that it is absolutely a myth. They are not targeted because Apple computers consume such a small portion of the market, and it's not 10%, it's closer to 5.

In fact modern Apple computers are Intel based and essentially no different than a PC. You can load Windows separate from OS X and dual boot, or remove OS X all together, on any iMac or MacBook and the machine will run fine under Windows. If you can find the drivers, you can run OS X on any Intel based PC as well. Virus protection has nothing to do with how they are built.

I like my MacBook, but let's be real.
