April 12, 201115 yr Got spanked plenty of times. Got threatened with the belt, but never actually received it. Spank as a parent when needed, but never with an object other than my hand. And I never say, "This is going to hurt you more than it's going to hurt me." Parents who say that aren't doing it right.
April 12, 201115 yr I got a couple of spankings, but honestly I was never really afraid of them. Mostly because my parents took it easy on me. Then, they discovered I was a kid that got bored very, very easily. So grounding became the punishment of choice. Needless to say, I rarely acted out because I hated being grounded more than anything. I remember one time, I took an Accelerated Reader test for one of my friends, and then once I knew all of the answers I took it for myself. We got busted (or ratted out by another kid really) and I got grounded for a couple of weeks. Everyday I sat in my room and listened to all my neighborhood friends outside having a blast. That was the last time I got grounded. I learned that if you're going to do something bad, just don't get caught.
April 12, 201115 yr Yes, I've been on the receiving end, and the giving end of the belt. And I never believed my dad when he told me, but it's true, it hurts the giver a lot more than it does the receiver. ^ This
April 12, 201115 yr I don't have kids, but when I do I guarantee I will use the belt I believe with all my heart I'm a better person because my parents used it. They certainly didn't over use, but they used it enough that the intended message got across.
April 12, 201115 yr Never got it when I was a kid but my Dad threatened to put my head in the plaster wall one night at Dinner and that was all it took. As an 8 yr old to hear that, it changes you real quick. I was a good kid also. I dont use corporal punishment on my kids now but back in the mid 90's when I was a young parent my teenager kids now got the hand on the rear a few times. My 16 yr old son still talks about the red mark on his backside when he backtalked me at 5 yrs old. LOL
April 12, 201115 yr As a kid I got some swats from my mother. I was the youngest, so I knew that Dad didn't play when it came to spankings, so when I was real bad I got from Mom "Wait till your Dad gets home". That usually straightened be up. I don't remember any whoopings, just a few spankings...to me there is a difference. When all 3 of us kids turned 16 we got cars...Dad's philosophy was the best way to discipline a 16 year old was to take the keys to the car...that worked as well. IMO as kids get older, they need "outs" to help fight against peer pressur...when I was 13 my Dad gave me the best out I ever recieved..."If I ever here you are smoking dope or doing drugs I will take a 2x4 to your rear end...I don't care how big you get." He meant it and stayed away from those things even though my friends didn't.
April 12, 201115 yr I can relate to both of these... When a sophomore at Whitley County, they had a walkout over the school's dress code. I stayed in the classroom. When told there was no need to be scared of the school, so come on. I simply said, "I'm not scared of the school system or anybody in it. The Sgt. Major waiting for me at home? That's another story." Never got it when I was a kid but my Dad threatened to put my head in the plaster wall one night at Dinner and that was all it took. LOL When I was a junior, my friends and I made plans for one Saturday. When that morning came, Dad had his own plans to finish the fencing on the north ridge of the farm. He told me to come on and I told him to something to himself that is not anatomically possible, then turned to go. I found out what it is like to literally have my butt kicked. It was also the only time I suggested he do anything to himself and the last time I turned my back on him when he was mad. I couldn't sit comfortably for a couple of weeks, but the fencing got done.
April 15, 201115 yr Yeah I got the belt when I was younger. I remeber and agree with what Richard Pryor said it was a bad kind of scologoy when mom made us go get a switch to beat our own butts with. And like he said you couldn't get a little one cause then she go get the tree to beat you with.
