Barnes staying at UNC? Irving & Plumlee leaving?

I thought the CBA would expire before the draft. Or more importantly before the picks have to be signed. So a guy drafted this year will be under the new rookie scale.

Draft is June 23rd and the CBA expires on the 30th. From my understanding they would be under the current rookie scale which is why it would be a terrible decision (business wise) to not go in the draft this year if you are a first round pick.

^You could also argue that it would be a terrible decision to go in the draft if it's looking like a lockout is looming (which is all but guaranteed IMO). Sure you'd be under contract, but you wouldn't be getting any of that money, and you wouldn't be playing any ball either.

On a related note, saw something from over KSR that said that Lamb's mother said he wouldn't even consider leaving unless he was given a concrete indication he was a definite 1st rounder. Also said ESPN's Ford said Jones' stock has been falling dramatically lately. Unfortunately said Knight's has been rising just as fast and he could work his way into the top 10.

True but they will get a deal in place at some point and you will make a lot more money on a contract now than vs with the new CBA.

Possibly, but I could see the rookie salary scale staying about the same with a new CBA as well. Seems to be working pretty good and its not like the NFL where rookies are making ridiculous amounts. Even if your the top pick you barely clear 5 mil in your first, second, and third seasons. Wall's salary is 5.14 mil this season with the second year moving up to 5.3 mil. Griffin is at 5.3 this year as well (second season under contract). By the fifth pick the salary drops all the way down to about 3.3 million. IMO, theres not much more you can reasonably take these salaries down, they are pretty good as is, I could possibly see the rookie scale increase by a few hundred thousand dollars as opposed to it going down. More than likely though I see it staying about the same.

So from that stand point I don't think players will be as hurt as it seems in the rookie scale going from the current CBA to the new. I think the NBA and players union have a lot of other things on the agenda they want to tweak other than the rookie scale in terms of renegotiating a new bargaining agreement. If theres any issues involving the CBA and whether or not some of these guys stay or go I'm guessing its because of concerns outside of what they will initially be making and more to do with when they can opt out of their contracts (sooner/later), be eligible for extension, etc. Right now the team option is in year three and keeps the player under contract for a third and fourth year. I could see the players union either trying to figure out ways to allow the players more freedom of choice in being able to sign with new teams but still get paid comparable sums to what they would have made staying with the team that drafted them Or something that would give players an option to resign with teams who may be looking to dump them and their salary (for example being able to accept an option at a discounted salary in exchange for remaining with the team).

^ There was talk about taking away some of the guaranteed money spots in the 1st round that is my main concern. The rookie scale is going to go down some but I agree it's not going to be a huge amount. Point is they can get more money going now and it's a weak class.

Even if you don't get paid agents will still float you money, and most guys get some kind of small endorsements so they'd be fine for a few months. Barnes could really use another year IMO. Irving could but he might as well go on and get that money. I don't see Plumlee getting much better in terms of being ready for the pros, so I wouldn't blame him for striking while the money is there.

His stock has dropped significantly... the money isn't there for him IMO. Plus I believe the deal with playing with his two brothers will influence his decision big time.

From what I understand this is true, but only for the top few picks.

Only player in the draft I see with All-Star type potential is Irving. Barnes is growing on me, though. This draft is hideous.

They are locks to be lottery picks, they need to go. Plumlee I am not so for sure about.

:thumb: Gotcha. Didn't know they were considering changing any of the first round salary guarantees.

I think the bigger story would be Jordan Hamilton and Tristan Thompson of Texas both staying another year...if Cory Joseph stays as well, with Myck Kabongo coming in next year. WOW! Texas could be a legit final 4 team.

Not with Rick Barnes as their coach. He'd still find a way to lose to a lower seeded team in the Final Four.

Yeah its looking like this is the rule and not the exception. Texas is always uber talented but can't seem to ever make a run in the tourney.
