Not a surprise at all.

We've been discussing this at the Mason/Bracken game thread. Correct, no surprise. The programs at a low point right now. We'll see how serious they are at making it close to the level of the boy's program.

The cupboard has been pretty lean at Mason County since "the big 3" graduated in 2008.

 

Seems like Mason County has had a tough time getting girls to come out to play lately.

I think that it's because of the coaches. Buser had a lot of talent on her hands, and that's why the program was so high. The girls worked hard and achieved what they did because of talent. If you weren't blessed with that talent, then she didn't put the effort into making you better. You just sat the bench. That turned a LOT of girls away from the program. Mason has depended on that one or two great players to carry them through, and this year (Smith) was just not enough to get them where they needed to be. They haven't been developing the bench or role players, but Butcher had started to work on that some, as more girls were getting a chance to play. I know a lot of girls are hesitant because of the way the program used to be, fearing that they had no hope of playing time no matter how talented they were or how hard they worked. It's very much a "name" game at Mason County. It'll be interesting to see who takes over and what they do with the program.

Good assessment. I don't think things changed too much. I've never seen much effort put into developing players. Girls don't get the same, or as much, social rewards, status and admiration, as boys for playing sports. If they feel mistreated, neglected, or unappreciated, many of them will simply quit. No problem. One girl who would have gotten a lot of playing time, maybe started, transferred to St. Patrick. Several promising girls simply quit over the past 2-3 years. At this level, you can't coach girls like you do boys. The psychology is different.

I met the Queen girl's dad he told me he never liked Coach Butcher for calling his girl soft, she had a injury at that time, Mr. Queen said he was about to let her go play for ST.Pat, or one of the other schoos.

Who will be the top candidates?

 

My guess is they'll stay within the program this time. They got burned pretty bad by bringing in Butcher. My prediction is Jason Butler will get promoted to Head Coach.

I Believe he(Butler) was jr. high coach at one time, He would be a good choice. If he gets it Congrats!!

That's my prediction as well.

What does burned mean? It implies that he did something demoralizing to the program. If the program did not live up to what the AD expected, then it is a disappointment. But Burned?

OK...I don't think he did anything to demoralize the program, so maybe "burned" wasn't what I should have said... I like your choice of "disappointment" better.
