Runner ups making the tournament

Featured Replies

I would like to know why the runner ups in each district gets to keep playing after they have lost. What happens if they have to play the team that beat them again and then win, it is not fair for the first winner. How long has this been going on ? Thanks

To the best of my knowledge, the districts and regions were classed into Class A (large schools) and Class B (small schools) back in the late 1920s and early 1930s for probably six or seven years.

It essentially worked like this for all three tournaments:

-Largest half of the schools in the event played in Class A

-Smallest half of the schools in the event played in Class B

-Class A champion would meet Class B champion for the tournament title

This pattern was repeated at the regional level and then again at the state level. So there was no magic number for what made a school Class A or Class B (in fact you could easily be A in one tournament and B in the next).

There were only eight regions at the time if I'm not mistaken. When the state moved to a sixteen region format the class format was eliminated. As a concession to the small schools who would have likely been on the outside looking in in this format, the state allowed district runners-up to join district winners in the regional tournament. It wasn't until the 1950s (or maybe early 60s) that district opponents couldn't play each other until the regional final. There are numerous examples of a district winner drawing their own runner-up in the first round.

Hopefully that helps. The dates may not be perfectly accurate, but they are close.

Thanks gchs_uk9 for a quick history lesson. Always wondered how the regional format was first set up.

Thanks gchs_uk9. Great information and history lesson. I like the Runner-up getting to the Regional tournament. It makes a nice setup with 8 teams and also gives teams from Districts that are stronger than others in their region a chance to continue on.

Great History lesson gchs_uk9! Think the runner-ups getting in is a good thing. Balances out the regional bracket well, plus it opens up the possibility for a runner-up to shake up the set-up.

I do as well. I hate to see a strong 27-3 team not have a chance to win region because of an off night. It happens.

As we saw tonight with Lexington Catholic or anyone from the stronger districts. It's not fair that they still wouldn't get a shot at the region title.

In the case of Trinity not even get into the region.

No doubt. They and Christian County were the best teams we played this year. They were both on another level.

In 2007 CCH beat Holmes in the district. Holmes beat CCH in the region final.

I don't have a problem with it.

There have been a number of district runner-ups who won state. Perhaps the most celebrated was the 1979 Lexington Lafayette team coached by Jock Sutherland, that lost in the district finals - to Henry Clay, I believe - and then marched on to the state title. It was their only loss all season.

And Holmes went on to lose to eventual state champ, Scott Co, in the state semi's.

Up until a few years ago, the district championship between Covcath and Holmes was also the region championship as well.

In a lot of cases, the two best teams in the region also reside in the same district.

07 is the only year I recall them meeting in the championship.

07/08 Holmes and Covcath met in the region finals as well out at Conner.

Henderson's senior year...Johnson Brothers sophomore year.

04/05- Holmes beat Conner in region finals, after Conner upset Covcath in region semi's at Conner.

05/06- Covcath beat Newcath in finals at Ryle after Holmes was upset by Dixie in first round

06/07- Holmes beat Covcath in OT at Holmes...Hill and Rice went on to lead Holmes to a Saturday morning date with eventual state champ, Scott Co

07/08- Holmes beat Covcath at Conner then lost to Darius Miller and Mason Co in the state championship.

08/09- Holmes beat Boone Co in what was probably the lowest scoring region championship ever...held at NKU, Holmes goes on to win the state title.

09/10- Newport beats Covcath in region semi's then gives Holmes an absolute beating in the region championship.

Holmes was a district runner up in 04/05 and 06/07. Votel beat Holmes in the 04/05 district championship at Holmes with an 8 ft jumper with like 3 seconds left.

In 1967 @ Campbell County, CovCath defeated Cov Holmes who they beat in the then 34th District Championship game to start their five year run of Ninth Regions Championships!

If Holmes were to get to the region championship this year, win or lose, how would that stack up to Covcath's feat in the late 60's?

That would give Holmes 6 region final appearances in 7 years (4 titles in 5 years). Sorry TOG, but I'm still somewhat young. History lesson please, sir.
