I think, ultimately, in the case of Tom and Jerry, it has to do with the "Mammy" character whose face we never see but who is always whipping Tom with the broom. In both cases, the liberal use of blackface as a humor piece after an explosion. Other cultural representations have come under fire as well, such as bearded and barefoot hillbillies, buck-toothed and squinty-eyed Japanese or other Asians, etc.
I always thought it was because they were considered "too violent" by all the nannies.

Please. Have you seen our TV and movies? By American TV standards, kids are never too young to be exposed to violence, while alternately being unwilling to discuss issues of race and sex maturely among adults.

Old cartoons:

Non-Cartoon on Satuday mornings:

H.R. Pufnstuf

Banana Splits Adventure Hour

Land of the Lost

Sigmund and The Sea Monsters

Ultraman

folks that made that show was definitely on something... Jimmy and the magic flute and, of course, the villain was Witchie Poo as I recall. I think the someone was 'puffing the magic dragon' when they dreamed up that show.

Still, I remember reading an article years ago about cartoons being too violent for children. It wasn't long after that we started seeing less of the good old cartoons.

No doubt about that!

My favorites when I was a kid were G.I. Joe, He-Man, Thundercats and Voltron. These days Southpark and Family Guy make me chuckle.

Just got my hopes up for nothing...

Apparently there is a rumor going around the internet (shocking) that Nickelodeon is bringing back several of their old cartoons and making new episodes. However, the only source for this information is a high school newspaper. You can read the article here if you want.

I got to say though, before I found out this rumor likely wasn't true I was really excited.
