February 3, 201115 yr Author So if you found out your best friend was a child rapist, you'd look the other way? Says a lot about your character if so. How in the world are we going from alleged steroid use to chid rapist? I am talking specifically about steroid use amongst Pettite and Clemens not deranged, sadistic individuals. I wouldn't have a friend(let alone a best friend), acquaintance, co worker or a neighbor who was a child rapist. Come on, son!!!!!
February 3, 201115 yr Author Lying under oath is the worst idea I've ever read on BGP, especially when you consider how high-profile this case is. Can he refuse to testify?
February 3, 201115 yr If I know my best friend is going to tell on me, I am going to confess before he tells on me or has to tell on me. I couldn't agree more with this statement. Definitely a tough situation for Petite but at the end of the day, I don't feel like he has a choice and that's cause Roger put him there.
February 3, 201115 yr I guess he could have gone the Greg Anderson route and refused to testify and head to prison himself. Now that is a friend.

Clemens brought this all upon himself and has looked foolish through the process. Pettite came clean I think rebounded nicely.

You never specified that you were speaking strictly about this situation. I kind of figured as much, but wanted to be sure, so I went to the extreme.

February 3, 201115 yr Author I couldn't agree more with this statement. Definitely a tough situation for Petite but at the end of the day, I don't feel like he has a choice and that's cause Roger put him there. I agree. I think we are seeing even more of the lack of character of Roger Clemens. It amazes me that Andy would even have to testify against him.
February 3, 201115 yr In general I am with PP92 on this one. Like him, I am fiercely loyal to my friends, for better or worse. Breaking the law (including lying under oath) for the protection of a best friend is defintely something I would consider. And before you any of you go dreaming up outlandish scenarios, this would have to still fit into my moral code...as Omar says, "a man gotta have a code"... In this particular situation, it seems the Roger has brought all this upon himself. Having said that, I'm sure there are ways that Petttite can testify that stay on the right side of the law and his friendship with Roger (if such a friendship still exists).
February 3, 201115 yr No way no chance I would risk going to jail so my friend could stay out of jail. That's what I don't understand about Greg Anderson. Why in the world would you sit in jail so your friend could sit at home. Just dumb. You can make new friends. Clemens is a punk and deserves to go to jail. Pettite took his lumps and admitted using. If Clemens is too much of a whimp to do the same then the only thing I could tell him is don't drop the soap.
February 3, 201115 yr My best friend would never ask me to commit perjury on his behalf, run the risk of being punished/imprisoned myself, simply so my best friend can avoid a similar punishment. And I would never ask that of him. A good friend would never do something like that, because a good friend is selfless. Roger Clemens wouldn't know selfless if it hit him over top the head.
February 3, 201115 yr Author Not that it makes a difference in this case but I would think that Greg Anderson was handsomely rewarded for his silence.
February 3, 201115 yr Pettitte has four kids, the youngest of which is only 5 years old. That there is reason enough to raise your right hand and tell the truth. Why risk going to jail for a few years so your buddy can walk away from charges which he brought upon himself.
February 3, 201115 yr This situation is why I don't have friends...then I don't have to get in these kinds of dilemmas.
February 3, 201115 yr Why would or should Pettite lie? Anderson was a better friend to Clemens , than Clemens was to Anderson (if we ignore the obvious possibility of $$ being involved). Clemens has admittedly committed adultery, the ultimate betrayal of a friend; has turned on the friend that originally provided him the drugs, and has suggested that Pettite, has "misremembered". Whom is Clemens loyal to other than his own best interests? Sorry, I may consider a lie to protect my wife or children, but never a friend considering the stakes. Misdeeds are quite often forgiven, lies and cover-ups are not. Pertaining to this topic specifically, compare the perception of Pettite to that of Mark Maguire or Rafael Palmero.
