Mercy 75 Boone County 68

Featured Replies

Good game with margin swings of an early 11 point Mercy lead to an 8 point BC lead just before the end of the 3rd period, to the final margin.

Anyone who is going to beat Mercy better not let them get the lead in the 4th quarter because the Jaguars simply don't miss free throws. At least the didn't today. They must have gotten 12-15 of their 4th quarter 25 at the line including, I believe, their last 10.

On the other hand Boone County missed some critical ones when the game was still within reach. The margin grew in the last minute as BC had to foul.

From the Louisville Courier Journal

Mercy beats Boone County 75-68 in Girls' LIT semifinal

By Jason Frakes The Courier-Journal

The Mercy Academy basketball team outscored Boone County 25-12 in the fourth quarter and posted a 75-68 victory this morning in a semifinal of the Republic Bank/Coca-Cola Louisville Invitational Tournament at Bellarmine.

Mercy (18-3) -- No. 2 in The Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings -- will face No. 1 Manual (18-4) in tonight's 8 o'clock championship game. Mercy and Manual have split their two meetings so far this season.

Mercy beat Manual 57-56 in last year's LIT final.

Whitney Hartlage scored 16 points to lead the Jaguars this morning. Juliann Miller (14 points, seven assists), Christine Roush (12 points, nine rebounds) and Lauren Faris (11 points) also had big games.

Sydney Moss had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 6 Boone County (18-4). Stacie Shrout was 5 of 10 from three-point range and scored 16 points. The Lady Rebels finished 11 of 24 from three-point range (45.8 percent).

Mercy..........25 13 12 25 75

Boone Co.....18 16 22 12 68

Mercy (18-3) -- Goetz 8, Ch. Roush 12, Faris 11, Hartlage 16, Miller 14, Richardson 5, Dircksen 2, Co. Roush 7.

Boone Co. (18-4) -- Moss 21, Nash 4, Jones 5, Shrout 16 , Browning 9, Robertson 13.

Boone is starting to get some balanced scoring and contributions from different players. Senior Kayla Robertson had a terrific game today, shooting the 3 well and getting some key baskets.

Mercy is the best example of how teams should play together. They are a great team.

Did Nell get tossed in this one?

According to the KHSAA website she did.

This is exactly my point in another thread. Take BC out of NKY and look out!!!!!!!

Ill bet wherever they played this game one or two things need attention. 1) Hardwood floor repair or 2) the heels of a certain persons shoes. LOL.

I would be curious to know how the refs called the game, did they let them play or did they call every beat down and every jersey hold. Just sayn...........

First of all, I'm a Louisville guy, but I must say that Boone County got "home cooked" by the officiating. I wanted to see a good game and check out Sydney Moss. What I got for my money was 3 guys in stripe shirts impersonating referees.

Soon the officials will be neutral and a game like this can only serve to give Boone more motivation to make some noise when it really counts.

Was the Boone coach tossed and if so at what point in the game did this occur?

Per the C-J, "Boone County coach Nell Fookes was ejected for drawing her second technical foul with 4:05 remaining in the third period."

Fortunately Boone has a game with Holmes this week prior to the Ryle game. Otherwise, we wouldn't see Nell.

That would have been very interesting!!!!

Nell is praying that weather doesn't cancel the Holmes game this week.

Interesting! See my further responses below.

Coach Fookes picked up a technical for challenging a call (I guess!) in the first half and another at about the 4:00 mark in the third quarter. This resulted in automatic ejection.

I don't think any of the Boone County fans in attendance complained about the ejection........mainly because we weren't sure why it occurred. Coach Fookes seemingly was trying to protect her players, certainly the last technical when there were a series of undercuts by Mercy players on rebounds. I don't think they were intentional but it was fortunate Sydney Moss didn't hit the deck on a couple of those. Fouls were called on some of those but there was no effort by the officials to stop the tactic. I believe the fussing about that was what drew the second T.

From what I could see the actions of Coach Fookes were no more demonstrative than those of a number of the coaches in the several games I watched. in fact the Mercy coach reacted even more severly later in the third quarter when BC made their run. He was warned, multiple times, and even guided back to his bench twice, complaining very vocally the whole time. But no technical!

You really need to get off this "kick". You obviously don't know what you're talking about and are apparently driven simply by dislike of Coach Fookes, or at least her antics......pretty obvious!. As I said "in another thread" I've seen Boone play out of the area and even out of state and there isn't that much difference in how Boone games are called. If you'd like I'll even dig up the stats to prove that.

To clarify that for you, what I'm saying is that their style of play doesn't change and the number of calls against them doesn't change. This tournament wasn't a lot different other than the technicals. Fact is it's tough for a non-Louisville area team to win here. That's what one should expect though, IMO.

Mercy was actually the more aggressive team and probably got away with more than Boone did. They certainly won the game at the free throw line, going 32-37 for the game and making 14 in the last period. I don't know how many free throws BC shot but it had to be in the 20's, probably high 20's. The game was called pretty much the same way both ends and Mercy ended up with more FT's because Boone had to foul at the end. Had Boone shot their FT's as efficiently as did Mercy the outcome could have been reversed.

But Boone certainly didn't have to change their style of play because they were out of the area.

You also ought to read what Sparky has to say above! Kinda a different perspective from someone who claims no bias and actually SAW the game.

I , personally, would like all games called tight at the start of the game to set the tone, so to speak. The last thing any of us wants wants is to see any of our young ladies getting hurt by rough fouls, undercutting, jersey pulls, etc. I know it's a thankless job being an official but there are still good ones, thought few and far between, IMO.

WVFranck, you are either in denial or living in a fairytale my friend. LOL.

You basically answered and confirmed everything that I said. I dont dislike Coach Fookes at all. I respect this legend for who she is and what she has accomplished in NKY. Hey, I am on her side believe it or not. I am just stating facts when it comes to NKY teams, whether its Girls BB, Football or Track. When NKY travels you have no chance unless of course you can dominate. Keep believing what you want, facts are facts, and Coach Fookes got tossed because, maybe just because she also knows how the odds are stacked against her team when she travels.

And the get offf the "kick" thingy, just having fun with the heel stomping antics that gets my attention when I watch her play, I mean watch BC play. LOL. Ease UP there Frankie, All in fun.
