Sometimes not.....sometimes
So ... Tilghman's defense, especially their speed, had little or nothing to do with how Mayfield played that night?

Not trying to take anything away from PT, because they were 1 team that matched the Cards in the speed category, but, Guhy wasn't throwing the ball well, even though he had very little pressure and Richardson and Higginson both dropped a couple of passes that should have been for sure TDs...
I managed to get a copy of the boxscore of the game ...

Guhy was 13-20 for 198 yards, so apparently he was throwing the ball a little better than you remember. He also had five carries for -12 yards, which leads me to think he was sacked two or three times.

PT had little to no running game...
They actually had more rushing yards than Mayfield, and with fewer carries. I remember reading Joe Morris commenting after the game that the Cardinals needed to run the ball better and how much trouble they had with Tilghman's quick defensive line.

I also think Mayfield played one of its worse games of the year against PT and you can pretty much throw the records out when those 2 play anyway...
It's amazing how some fans always feel like their teams play their worst games against the best teams on their schedule, as if the opponent had nothing to do with it.
Not I...I think Mayfield could beat Henderson County,Bowling Green and Christian County. But I guess we will never Know...:thumb:
Henderson, I'm not arguing over.

Christian and Bowling Green, I will ... Bowling Green lost a two-point game to Trinity. Do you think Mayfield could do that?

No... I think BGreen is the better of the 2 teams, though. I realize CC beat them, but, they led for a whole 15 secs of that game... I consider the BG win an upset... I think Mfd could compete with BGreen and it be a 1-2 score game, either way, with BG likely winning 3 out of 5 or 7 out of 10, probably... With CC, I think Mfd could win 1/2 the time, maybe more... I think Mfds line matches up well and they could effectively run the ball and there defense could slow down the Colonels, not completely shut them down, but, slow them down enough that they would be right in the game and be able to make a few more big plays... As far as the Tilghman game goes, I believe Guhy was 6 of 6 out of the gate but then 6 of 14 the rest of the way with some passes really missing wide open receivers... PTs defensive line did a good job against the run, as well, but, I still don't think Mfd played nearly as well as they're capable of and I felt PT did... Like I said, not taking anything away from PT and not trying to not give them some credit for what they did in that game, but, after the 1st qtr, it looked like Mfd just went thru the motions for the next 2 qtrs and then did just enough to squeek by late...Even great teams have lulls at times..

"Just went through the motions?" ... do you really believe that?

Westsider , I wasn't particurlarly talking about the Mayfield/PT game. Your response to the question seemed fairly broad. Just like mine.

"Just went through the motions?" ... do you really believe that?

Seemed that way...Went from an emotionally charged team early to one that looked like they were sleep walking for the whole 2nd and 3rd qtrs... I know they were trying, but, that is what it looked like... It appeared they got frustrated that they couldn't just score at will, like they had every other game to that point and it took them awhile to figure out they had to play or go home disappointed... I think it says alot about the team to be able to battle thru a game where you aren't at your best and still come away with a win against a very good opponent... I think if they played today, Mayfield would beat them by a minimum of 2 scores, but,, i'd bet more like 3...

I think the biggest thing is people think just because you're a 1a enrollment that you couldn't beat a good 4 or 5a team.. In alot of cases, thats the truth, but, I've seen alot of 4a and 5a teams who have less players than Mayfield does and certainly alot less skill players.. I watched NCC against Beechwood and imo, they're nowhere near as talented as Mayfield.. I think Mayfield would have handled Lone Oak this year, who was pretty much a Top 5 team in 4a.. Christian is athletic, but, also, a very lucky team and not a great offensive team, at all. Sure, CC has played a good schedule, but, that doesn't mean I can't watch 2 teams on different fields and determine who I think would win or which I think had the most talent...

I've noticed this on a lot of threads. Be careful judging a team against their worst performance of the year. In general, the best way to get a beat on a team is to take out their best and worst performance and judge them on the body of work. Could they beat Mayfield??? Maybe, but right now I know that NewCath's fans and players couldn't care less, and I'm sure that Mayfield's couldn't either. If neither team wins on Friday, then the argument is worthless.

Good point, Mexi... It just gets aggravating because there's a stigma about classifications... I'm sure there's been many a year, Beechwood and NCC could have beaten or maybe even did beat a Ryle, Cov Cath, Dixie type team... Mayfield's done it numerous times over the years and I'll admit for the most part, the really good bigger schools would beat a really good smaller school, but, it's certainly not always the case and this is one of those years where I feel the Cardinals could compete pretty well in any class. No, they wouldn't beat Trinity. Doubtful they'd beat Highlands, Ryle, Boyle or Bell, but, I think if you threw those handful of teams out, they'd be right in the thick of it in every class. I think they're better than Hendo, who gave Male an O/T game and I think they would beat Christian, so, I don't think I'm too overboard in my thoughts...Course, it doesn't matter because it's all speculation anyway, just like to give credit where credit's due...

Lets just say they would be competetive with most schools in the state but a handfull. Thats about all you can ask.

Why argue about this? All of us will never know! If your a big Mayfield fan. Most will think they can beat almost any team in the state. (Maybe) If your not your most likely not to think in those terms. Either way it can't and won't be proven be either side. Mayfield so far is tied for being the best in 1A. Don't see how you could get past maybe we can or I doubt it. This stuff of I know we can beat someone and never play them is a moote point!!

Henderson, I'm not arguing over.

I don't know.:idunno:I doubt it but I would travel from Danville to Mayfield to watch it.:thumb:
